Chapter 1

E.P.O.V.

“Thanks Carlisle, I really appreciate it,” I said into the phone.

“Esme will be excited for your visit during spring break.”

“Carlisle?”

“Yes?”

“How long was I in hiding?”

“Only one year.”

Bella would be out of school. I assumed that she was still living in Forks or somewhere near her mom or dad. That means that I wouldn’t run into her in England. Also there would be plenty of wildlife for hunting, and England isn’t very sunny so I wouldn’t have to miss much school. Carlisle had already sent all of the registration materials to the school and they had sent the schedule to him which he then emailed to me. This was all because I was to start at Buckingham High School in the middle of the semester. It’s mid-November right now and I am starting at the school the Monday after Thanksgiving break.

For the past two years, I had been in Brazil hiding. I only went outside to hunt at night. I didn’t answer IM’s, emails or phone calls from my family or the Denali Coven. I wouldn’t contact anyone. I couldn’t think of anything except for Bella. How she would blush, how warm she was, and how she looked when I left her. I was so stupid. How could I have left her? How could I have lied to her? Why did she let me go without a fight? These were a few of the hundreds of questions that ran through my head all of the time.

I left the attic where I had been living in, ran to the nearest airport, and bought an airplane ticket for the next flight to Seattle. The lady behind the counter didn’t even question my luggage less state.

An hour later, after going through security, I was sitting near the gate for my flight. I let the flood of memories flow through my mind again. James almost killing Bella, Jasper lunging for her, the meadow, the prom, Bella running to Phoenix, her warm skin, her sleep talking…. My thoughts were interrupted when my flight started to board. Since I was riding first class, I was one of the first people to board.

Once seated I decided to think about my family, I spent the entire trip thinking of Carlisle, Esme, Emmett and Rosalie, (who apparently had gotten married again), and Alice and Jasper. I also planned my homecoming almost second by second.

When I arrived in Seattle, I jumped into my silver Volvo and decided to drive home really quick to pick a up couple things. Then I would drive to New York and take another plane to England.

“Perfect,” I commented on my plan as I sped along the freeway. “I just hope that they are all hunting.”

I was lucky. Only Jasper was home.

“Hey. I thought you weren’t coming home until spring.”

“I have to get my stuff. Please don’t tell anyone that I was here”

“I won’t. Alice would freak and Esme would be disappointed that you didn’t say hello.”

“Thanks.”

“No problem.”

He could feel my stress over the entire situation. If they came back while I was still here, I would never leave. To avoid that, I packed up a bunch of clothes, my favorite CDs (I had contemplated which ones to bring since the plan ride from Brazil), and my top 10 favorite books. I could buy more in England. Then I left.

The overall road trip only took about a day and a half thanks to my fast driving and sleepless state. The seven hour airplane trip did not capture my interest. Not even the “hot” (according to the guy behind me) girl who sat next to me. The girl did not have even a hundredth of the beauty of Bella.

After we landed I went and got the car that Carlisle had bought for my stay. It was a silver Camry Solora because they didn’t have any Volvos, and I liked driving fast. I left the London Airport and drove the remaining way to Wells where the school was. Wells reminded me a lot of Forks, a small town with few citizens and a nice forestry feel to it. As I walked towards the dorms, I remembered that I had to share the apartment with a girl because it was the last on-campus opening left.“I wonder how I will explain my eating and sleeping habits to her.” I wondered.

I walked into the apartment (because that is what it looked like) and noticed that no one had been there for at least four days.“Well, duh Edward. She is probably with her family for thanksgiving.”

I decided to look around a bit. Down the short hall, on the left side of the living room/kitchen, were three doors. I opened the one right in front of me and saw that it was the bathroom with two sinks. The counter around one of them was covered in cosmetics. Oh please don’t be another Rosalie-wanna-be. I closed the door and opened the one on the right. Must be her bedroom. How did I know? I knew because of the clothes laying on the bed, and the desk with some small make up containers. I turned to the last door and opened it. Inside was a dark blue room with a bed in the left hand corner, shelves along the right side, perfect for my books and CDs, and a desk at the far side of the room. There was a lamp on the desk and a matching chair for my use. That was it.

Then there was a knock at the door. I walked up wondering who it could be. There stood a glorious sight…
