“I don’t want you to come with me.”
“You… don’t… want me?”
That was the day that my heart was shattered into a thousand pieces. The pieces were scattered farther and farther from each other as time went on. My best friend, Jacob Black, painstakingly gathered all the pieces and tried to glue my heart back together. He’s a good guy, much more than I deserve, but he stooped to my level out of his kindness. He’s not my Romeo, but at least he never left.
I carefully picked up the test that I had left on the sink. Positive. Hmm… well maybe it was one of those faulty positive-negatives. Unlikely, I thought as I glanced over at the seven other tests I had taken. If Charlie found these, that would spell disaster. I quickly swept the tests into a plastic bag and I took it out to the dumpster out front. I stuffed the bag into the already full container. I felt like a fugitive, glancing down the driveway as guiltily as I felt.
As soon as I got into my house, the phone rang. I ran to pick it up.
“Hey, has everything been alright?” spoke a deep, husky voice.
“Yeah, Jake… about that…” How the heck was I going to tell him?
Immediately, he fell silent and I could feel his tension through the phone.
“I-I… took… the other t-tests… and…” I stammered. He broke the silence.
“They said positive, didn’t they?”
“Yes.” He was silent for a minute. When he spoke, his voice was tender with concern.
“Don’t you worry Bells. Everything’s going to be fine, you can count on it.”
“Oh Jake…” He was always so understanding. I couldn’t possibly deserve him. Just like I didn’t deserve Him. Agony reeked havoc on my heart as I thought of Him. I took a deep breathe, controlling the spasms of pain that shot through me.
“Bella? Are you okay?” His voice was low with fresh worry.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine.” I lied.
“Don’t you dare lie to me, Bella.”
“Honestly, I’m fine Jake.” How did he know when I did things like that?
“Bells, I’m on my way over now, okay? Just stay there.” He hung up.
I set the phone back on the receiver, only to hear three light raps on the front door. I hurried to the door, and flung it open. Jacob took me in his arms gently, cradling my head against his chest.
“Everything’s going to be alright now Bells. You can count on it.” He repeated.
“I know, I know.” I murmured into his chest. I felt better already, with his arms around me and his fever warm body close to me. I looked up at him, examining my boyfriend with fervor.
His dark brown eyes gazed back at me with concern. He smiled, and his white teeth shone against his smooth dark skin. He leaned down, and pressed his lips softly against mine.
“I know a great doctor in La Push that can help us, you know. He can keep a secret too.” He winked.
I contemplated this. If this doctor really could keep a secret, then maybe. If Charlie even got an inkling of information about this… Jake and I would be under house arrest for quite some time. But first I needed to see if this doctor was really a man, or woman, of their word.
“Well, Jake, I don’t know. I would like to meet this doctor of secrecy first.”
Jacob smiled. Of course Jake would be all for it.
“Sure.” He said easily.
I studied his easy-going expression. There was something off about it. Then I saw it. He wasn’t smiling his Don’t-worry-about-it-I’ll-take-care-of-it smile like he usually was when I was worried about something. He was smiling his I’m-keeping-something-from-you-but-I-really-don’t-want-to smile.
I sighed. “Jake, what are you keeping from me?” He widened his eyes innocently.
“I’m not keeping anything from you.”
“You can tell me anything.” Pain and sadness flickered in his eyes. He opened his mouth to speak again, but after a moment he closed it and sighed.
“I would if I could Bells. I would if I could.” He murmured, his eyes full of an emotion that I couldn’t identify. Before I could, he pulled out the poker face. He plastered a smile on his face, but it didn’t reach his warm brown eyes, which were filled with a sadness that I didn’t understand. I bit my lip, trying to will myself to understand something that I had no idea about.
“Well, let’s go see that doctor, shall we?” He said cheerfully.
