We bought two tickets on the earliest flight to Italy and quickly boarded the plane when it was ready. When we were seated on the plane, I somehow got the nerve to ask Phillip about himself. I didn’t really want to sit here and do nothing all the way there, and talking to him seemed simple enough.
“So… can I ask you about yourself?” I asked tentatively.
“Why do you want to know about me?” he replied.
“I don’t know. I‘m kinda curious about you. You seem interesting.”
“Well, I don’t see any harm in telling you, and it’ll give me something to do. What do you want to know about, exactly.”
“How about your family?” I asked.
“Alright, well, I was born in 1970. I had a sister, Kayla, and two brothers, Anthony and Brandon who were twins. We lived in Illinois with our parents.
“Our parents died on my nineteenth birthday. They were in a car crash. They were coming home from a party at my father’s company, when the brakes stopped working in our car. The car went straight through a stoplight and the other vehicles couldn’t stop. They ran right into our car and rolled it. My father died there, but my mother was taken to the hospital.
“I went to see her alone and she told me that I had to make sure the family didn’t get broken up. I told her that she’d still be around, but she didn’t listen and made me promise. I did, and she died less then an hour later.” he paused and looked at me.
“If it’s too hard for you to tell this to me you don’t have to.” I said.
“No, it’s not a problem. I was just wondering why you really want to know.” he replied, staring questioningly at me.
“I told you already,” I sighed. “I just want to know about you.”
“I don’t see why you’d want to. I am your kidnapper after all.”
“But, you don’t seem like you are a bad person. After all isn’t this just your job?” I asked.
“I suppose so. Do you really want to hear more?” I nodded, and he continued.
“Ok, well, when she died I went back home and told my siblings what had happened. They were shaken up to say the least. I told them that mom wanted us to stick together no matter what, and that I was going to take care of them. I was the eldest, after all.
“After our parents’ funeral, child services tried to find any family that would take all four of us. None of our family would. It wasn’t a shock to me because my parents were never close with their relatives. The woman put in charge of us said it would be hard to keep us all together. I wouldn’t even consider that. When she told us to go home and pack all our things, I told Kayla to help the boys pack and that she should pack as much as she could for herself as well. I had a plan to run away with them and live some place where I could take care of them and keep us together.
“When we were done packing, I took the keys to our old mini van that we had in the garage. I got everyone in and we took off. It was fortunate for us that the woman didn’t care to watch us at our house. We left and we never went back.
“I drove us to a little town in northern Wisconsin. I pretended to be just another teenager living on his own and I got a rundown apartment for us to live in. I got a job and tried my best to provide for them. They were too young to fully understand what was really going on. Kayla was fourteen and the twins were only ten. I felt horrible for putting them through that. They didn’t even get to go to school.
“We lived like that for almost two years. One stormy day, I came home from work and I saw a strange, official-looking car outside the apartment building. I ran up to our apartment to find two police officers and the woman from child services in there with my sister and brothers. They told me that they were putting the kids in foster care. I told them that they couldn’t do that, that I’m there brother and I have to take care of them, but they didn’t listen. Also, to make matters worse, they wanted to arrest me for kidnapping my own family. I got angry and I tried to grab the one cop’s gun. It was stupid, but I was desperate. I managed to get it and told them to leave. The other cop pulled his gun on me, so I gripped the gun harder and he must have thought I was going to shoot because he shot me in the left shoulder, dangerously close to my heart.
“I was rushed to the stupid low-tech hospital and they tried to save me. I was in surgery when an electrical surge from the storm went through the building. All the equipment started acting funny and the heart monitor went dead even though I was still alive. They pronounced me dead and sent me to the morgue. They were very stupid for doctors.
“To make things better, the morgue attendant just so happened to be a vampire. He decided to drain me since I was supposedly dead, but he got a change of heart and decided to change me for company. He took me to his house where I finished the change. I was so angry when I awoke that I killed him on the spot.”
“Wow.” That word was the only one I could say. “What a tough life,” I said sadly.
“Yeah, well, I’m over it so let’s leave it at that,” he said moodily.
“Did I say something to upset you?” I asked.
“No, it’s just, I don’t want your sympathy. It was my own fault. I don’t deserve it.” he said angrily.
That shut me up. I was afraid to talk to him, so I told him I was going to sleep.
When Phillip woke me up, we were getting ready to land. We got off and went to rent a car.
We left the airport and started our drive to Volterra.
Italy was beautiful to say the least. Everything seemed so majestic and I was actually happy to see it even though I wasn’t here on good terms.
Phillip was quiet for most of the ride. He didn’t seem as open as he was on the plane. When we were about an hour away, he bought me some food. When I finished it, I decided to ask him another question.
“Phillip?” I said.
“What is it?” he said not looking at me.
“How did you get involved with the Volturi?” I asked.
“They found me soon after I killed that vampire. I had been furious and was hunting quite a lot and not caring who saw. They heard about it and came to stop me. A couple of the guards came and tried to kill me. However, I was a very good fighter, so they stopped and asked me if I’d be willing to come back to Volterra with them. I agreed because I knew that if any more Volturi came I wouldn’t be able to fight them off. When I met Aro, he seen what I’d been through and he said I would be a valuable asset to him because of my good fighting skills. I have been with them since.”
“I see,” I mumbled. “Is that your power? You know… fighting well?”
“Sort of, it’s more of just a heightened sense, but I do have a power. It’s not important or anything, but I can manipulate how people feel about things or influence their decisions. For example, I could make you suddenly get very angry at me and not talk to me.” he said.
“Oh that’s kind cool… could you like make someone fall madly in love with someone else?” I asked curiously.
“I suppose I could, but I don’t see why I would want to.” he said. “Why do you ask?”
“I don’t know. I just think it’d be useful to get someone who has a crush on you to stop following you around.” I said thinking of Mike Newton. Phillip’s power might come in handy for that. I smiled.
“Why are you smiling? Do you have someone back in Forks that follows you everywhere?” he asked.
“Yes, unfortunately, I do.” I said sighing.
“I can see why.” he said quietly.
“What?” I asked. Did he just say that?
“Nothing. Oh, look at that, we’re here. Welcome to Volterra.”
