Pg 137 Breaking Dawn
"Don't worry about what she said. It's nothing but legends, old lies for the sake of entertainment."
"I didn't understand anything," I told him, though it wasn't entirely true. As if I could discount something because it was a legend. My life was circled by legends on every side. They were all true.
"I packed your toothbrush. I'll go get it for you.
"He walked ahead of me to the bedroom.
"Are we leaving soon?" I called after him.
"As soon as you're done."
He waited for my toothbrush to repack it, pacing silently around the bedroom. I handed it to him when I was finished.
"I'll get the bags in the boat."
He turned back. "Yes?"
I hesitated, trying to think of some way to get a few seconds alone.
"Could you... pack some of the food? You know, in case I get hungry again."
"Of course," he said, his eyes suddenly soft. "Don't worry about anything. We'll get you to Carlisle in just a few hours, really. This will all be over soon."
I nodded, not trusting my voice. He turned and left the room, one big suitcase in each hand.
I whirled and scooped up the phone he'd left on the counter. It was very unlike him to forget things-to forget that Gustavo was coming, to leave his phone lying here. He was so stressed he was barely himself.
I flipped it open and scrolled through the preprogrammed numbers. I was glad he had the sound turned off, afraid that he would catch me. Would he be at the boat now? Or back already? Would he hear me if I whispered?
I found the number I wanted, the one I had never called before in my life. I pressed the 'send' button and crossed my fingers.
"Hello?" the voice like golden wind chimes answered.
"Rosalie?" I whispered. "It's Bella. Please. You have to help me."
"...Bella?" she asked uncertainly, her voice confused, and even a bit nervous. "What happened? Is Edward all right?"
"Yes, yes, he's... fine." How could I explain that he was so stressed and steely hard and in shock? Did that qualify as OK?"
So... not that I mind talking to you or anything... but... is everything ok?"
She had every right to be confused. We never had a very warm relationship, what with her hating me for giving up a whole life that she wanted, but was forcibly taken away from her. We never said more than a sentence directly to each other.
"Well-I-you--" I scrambled for words, but nothing came out. I heard footsteps coming closer and closer. Would I be caught? I only had seconds. "Check your email," I finally stuttered.
"Why? Bel-" I snapped the phone shut just as Edward held out his hand for it.
"No problem," I squeaked. He looked at me funny, but didn't ask.
"Come," he said. "The boat is ready." He held out his hand, and I took it warily. His grip was just a little too tight.
The spray from the boat drenched me, but I tried to take a nap anyway. I caught a glimpse of Edward's face, hoping to see the smile that results in the speed of the little craft. But it was nothing like the grin he had coming here. His face was the oddest mixture of guilt, fear, anger, and determination. It was as if somebody was strangling him.
I supposed I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew I was in the airport in Rio. As soon as we were through the metal detectors and on the plane, I remembered my plan.
"Edward, can I use your laptop, please?" He handed it to me and closed his eyes.
I wasted no time in going onto my email account. I typed in Rosalie's username and began writing:
Rosalie- Please, you have to help me. I'm.... well... you see... It's just that.... I'm pregnant . I don't know how it's possible, but it's true, I'm pregnant, and Edward wants to abort the baby and he's going to ask Carlisle but I really want the baby and he'll never agree! You have to help me!
I sent it and closed my eyes, trying to figure out how she'll get around Edward and Carlisle. She will, I tried to reason with myself. Of course she will. She wants a child more than anything. But I couldn't picture anyone getting around Edward when he's set on something. Especially if it was about my safety, which this apparently was.
I didn't have enough time to blink before the computer beeped. I opened it up and scanned my inbox.
1 New Message, it said.
I clicked on it, half scared, half relieved.
Subject- (No Subject)
Message-I'll get around Carlisle and Edward if it's the last thing I do. You have my word.
Never in my entire life was I so grateful. Especially to Rosalie. That was definitely a first.
I sent a reply back, containing only one word.
