My idea for a different way to end Twilight. What if Edward decided he wasn't strong enough to save he the way he did in the book? What if he asked Carlisle to save her?

“My hand is burning,” I screamed, finally breaking through the last of the dankness, my eyes fluttering open. I couldn’t see his face, something dark and warm was clouding my eyes. Why couldn’t they see the fire and put it out?
His voice was frightened. “Bella?”
“The fire! Someone stop the fire!” I screamed as it burned me.
“Carlisle! Her hand!”
“He bit her.” Carlisle’s voice was no longer calm, it was appalled. I heard Edward catch his breath in horror.
“Edward, you have to do it.” It was Alice’s voice, close by my head. Cool fingers brushed at the wetness in my eyes.
“No!” he bellowed.
“Alice,” I moaned.
“There may be a chance,” Carlisle said.
“What?” Edward begged.
“See if you can suck the venom back out. The wound is fairly clean.” As Carlisle spoke, I could feel more pressure on my head, something poking and pulling at my scalp. The pain of it was lost in the pain of the fire.
“Will that work?” Alice’s voice was strained.
“I don’t know,” Carlisle said. “But we have to hurry.”
“Carlisle, I...” Edward hesitated. “I don’t know if I can do that.” There was agony in his perfect voice.
“It’s your decision, Edward, either way. I can’t help you. I have to get this bleeding stopped here if you’re going to be taking blood from her hand.”
I writhed in the grip of the fiery torture, the movement making the pain in my leg flare sickeningly.
“Edward,” I screamed. I realized that my eyes were closed. I opened them, desperate to find his face. And I found him. Finally, I could see his perfect face, staring at me, twisted into a mask of indecision and pain.
“Alice, get me something to brace her leg!” Carlisle was bent over me, working on my head. “Edward, you must do it now, or it will be too late.”
I looked at Bella. She was screaming, begging for the pain to stop but I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t save her. I was too selfish. I bent down and kissed her forehead.
“I’m sorry, love,” I whispered. “I need you too much. I’m sorry. Please forgive me for my selfishness.” I could feel Carlisle’s eyes on me.
There’s no going back now. This is the choice she would’ve wanted. Don’t beat yourself up about it.
I nodded once and then turned to Alice. She was smiling in triumph.
“The future is much better this way, trust me!” she said brightly. I’ll have to double up you two’s wardrobe, though. Do me a favor and make a serious effort not to just rip each other’s clothes off every night. I love shopping, but not that much.
I glared at her. Emmett walked over to us. “Why is Bella still screaming?” he asked. I pointed at Bella’s hand. “James bit her.”
His eyes widened. Carlisle put the contents of his medical bag back, and spoke. “The only way to stop this would have been to try and suck the venom back out.” Emmett looked at me again.
“I think I prefer your choice. Though, I don’t envy my new little sis right now. Have you called Esme yet?”
I shook my head. “I’ll take care of that now. Stay with her, Carlisle, please. I need some fresh air,” I said. I didn’t want to leave her side, but I couldn’t ignore all of the blood any longer. I walked outside. Clouds had covered the sky since we had arrived. I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and dialed Esme. She answered on the first ring.
“Is everyone okay?” she asked frantically.
“We’re fine. James is dead.” my voice was a little strained.
“What about Bella?” her voice was colored with worry.
“James bit her a few seconds before I got there. She’s alive, but the venom is in her veins. She’ll be a vampire in three days,” I said, my voice breaking in several places. I heard Rosalie’s gasp in the background.
“It’s for the best, I guess,” Esme said sympathetically. “I’m sorry. I know that you didn’t want this for her.”
I sighed heavily. “The only way to save her from it was to suck the venom back out of the wound. I didn’t trust myself not to accidentally kill her, and I couldn’t have lived with myself if I did. I just hope she doesn’t hate me for it when the transformation is over.”
“She won’t hate you. She loves you, Edward, and you love her. You’ve been the odd-man-out for too long. It’s about time you found someone to spend eternity with. May I talk to Carlisle?”
I ran back inside and handed him the phone. They discussed when we’d be going home and decided that we’d drive back tonight. I held Bella in my arms and carried her to the car. She screamed the entire way there, and every one of her screams tore right through me. I held her close and hummed her lullaby. Esme ran out to us as soon as we were out of the car. She stopped right in front of me. Her eyes were sad but her thoughts were content.
She’ll be better off this way, I think. Both of you will. You need each other.
She turned to Carlisle, and looked into his eyes before flinging her arms around him. Then, Rosalie came running out of the house. She jumped straight into Emmett’s arms and started kissing him, murmuring, “I was so worried,” and, “I love you,” every few seconds. I looked away and silently ran to my room. I sat on my couch and held Bella close. Alice and Jasper knocked on my door. I nodded for them to come in.
“I’m so sorry, Edward. I should have insisted on going with her when she said she was hungry,” Alice said quietly. Jasper put his arm around her and pulled her closer to him. My arms tightened around Bella.
“It’s not your fault, Alice. It’s not your fault, either, Jasper. I never should have brought her to the game. It was careless. There’s nothing that can be done about it now,” I said. Another scream from Bella cut off what Jasper was about to say. I kissed her forehead and whispered, “I love you, my angel.”
“No pun intended, but I feel your pain. If I was you, and it was Alice going through the transformation in my arms, I would have gone crazy by now. Just think about what will happen when it’s all over. The two of you can be together forever,” Jasper broke off and continued in his thoughts, you can even get married. Alice will probably say something about that. She’ll want to plan it. Please don’t be like Emmett and Rosalie, though. I really don’t think I could handle that much lust in the air. My own is hard enough to manage.
I grinned slightly, “I’ll make an effort, but I can’t make any promises. Besides, you know how newborns are. She’ll be too busy dealing with the thirst for a while, and I would never push her to do something she didn’t want to do.”
I know, but the wild side doesn’t last forever, and forever is what we have; like it or not!
I liked the idea of forever. If I couldn’t hear Bella screaming, I might have actually smiled.
