"I'll be back when Charlie's asleep, ok?" I whispered and leaned down to kiss her, smiling crookedly at her. Then she shocked me, by doing something I never expected Bella to do.

She shied away from me.

I looked confused at her, but she was avoiding my eyes, biting her bottom lip.

"Couldn't you just pick me up tomorrow?" She whispered so low, that even I almost missed it.

"You... You don't want me to come over tonight?" I stammered. Bella always wanted me to stay. What had made her change her mind? Had I done something wrong? Said something? Now that I thought of it, she had seemed quite distracted the whole evening. Even at school. I'd all but forgotten I was waiting for an answer, when Bella nodded slightly.

"Okay..." I said, hesitant. "Then I'll see you tomorrow." How strange that sounded.

I wanted to kiss her goodbye, but she turned her head, so that I only could give her a kiss on her cheek.

I walked back to my car, with my hands in my pockets. For some unknown reason, they were shaking.

Once I was inside the car, I looked back at Bellas front door. She wasn't there. Why wasn't she there? She always just stood there and waited until I was out of sight.

For the first time in almost century, I felt nauseated.

As I drove home, I couldn't help but to think of Bellas unusual behaviour. She had never acted this way before. Not even when she thought I didn't love her anymore.

I shuddered at the memory.

She had seemed so uncertain, like she was wondering if the two of us really was what she wanted.

I froze at that thought.

Had Bella finally taken my words seriously?

It had been so long since I'd said them. So long since I'd told her I wasn't safe for her. Not right for her. Told her that she shouldn't love me, that it wasn't safe.

Remembering now, I couldn't believe I had told her that. I wished, more than anything, that I could take them back. Especially if they were the reason for Bellas reluctant behaviour tonight. "Arh" I exclaimed. I slammed the breaks down, stopping the car immediately. I couldn't take it anymore. I had to go see Bella. But I couldn't take my car there. I could drive home first. But the thought of staying away, even that short amount of time, made my entire being hurt.

I quickly got out of the car, turning around and started to run through the forest, back to my angels house.

I was almost at her house, when a familiar scent, one I never thought I would find here, hit me. Jasper.

What was he doing here? He hadn't even been near Bella since we had returned from Italy. And I was sure he hadn't even talked to hear since the "incident" on her birthday.

Bellas birthday.

That fateful day, where my brother had attacked Bella, forcing me to make the biggest mistake of my life.

I had a very bad feeling about this.

I raced towards her house, running faster than ever before. I had to hurry. If I was late I... I didn't want to end that thought. I just kept forcing my feet forward. Faster and faster.

If he even ruffled one brown hair on her beautiful head I would rip his miserable head from his shoulders, and I would enjoy it. Alice could get angry at me later. He was not going to lay one single hand on my angel.

I could feel my phone ringing. I didn't dare to stop and answer it.

By the time I was at Bellas house, my phone still hadn't stopped ringing. I could feel it vibrating in my pocket as I climbed the tree next to Bellas window.

I was about to crash through her window, but I stopped myself in time. More like, what I saw stopped me in time.

I was too late.
