I struggled to get to sleep. My skin was burning hot and I tossed and turned. My head ached and I felt stiff and cramped. Then there was a crack and I yelled in pain. I wanted to vomit but my mouth felt like was sealed shut. My bones cracked again as they shifted. My fingers curled inwards. The moment the connected with the palm of my hand, they were sealed there, making my hands into fists. The skin ripped to make paws.
The rest of my body felt like the skin was being pulled off by red-hot pokers. I gagged as something forced its way out of my mouth. A muzzle, long and slender with fur on it. My skin split all over my body and fur protruded. I tried to scream but instead a feral howl came from my jaws. I snarled and fought against it. There was another burst of pain as a tail broke through my skin. I attempted to get to my feet but my legs wouldn't support me. I fell to the floor and crawled down the stairs, howling in pain.
"Holly?!" yelled my mum when she saw me. I was a horrific sight. My mouth had a muzzle in it, still trying to force its way into the air. The fur that was already out bristled and made me howl in pain again. Another bone clicked into place. Something covered my eyes. I could see blood. I realized it was the inside of my own face.
I howled once more as my wolf face was forced out of my human mouth. My human face split in half. I could see again, but differently. I felt a pain in my stomach but I knew this one. Hunger. So hungry. There was no sense or reason anymore. The last bone clicked into its location and I stood on all fours, hackles raised. I snarled with frustration as I shook off the final pieces of clothing and blood that clung to my fur.
I didn't remember anything. Not who I was, how I had got there. I didn't recognize the frail woman in front of me, except as a meal. I snarled and my paws moved incredibly quickly. Blood splattered the windows. A man came into the hallway. He had a shotgun and he fired at me. I roared as the hot lead went through my skin. It didn't hurt me, just irritated me. I slashed at him and he blocked me with the gun barrel. I knocked the gun to the floor. My claws unsheathed themselves and clacked against the stone floor.
I leapt on him and tore with my teeth and claws. Hot blood gushed into my mouth but it wasn't what I wanted. I wanted meat. I probed the body with my teeth and the man groaned. I caught another scent. A delicious one. Fresh, tender, young meat. I slunk up the stairs. A small girl was sitting by a dolls house. I growled and she turned. She started to scream but the scream didn't have time to leave her lips before I was on her. I ripped open her throat and chest. I howled in victory as her blood and meat filled my body. But it wasn't enough. I leapt from her open window, landing on all fours.
I ran onto the moors, killing anything that got in my way and feasting on it. Everything looked different. Everything was black and white and there was a pulse to each creature that was the beating of their heart. Another smell caught in my nostrils and I turned, chasing it. I came across another creature. It was a wolf and I snarled at it. It didn't snarl but sniffed at me. I tried to slash at it but it avoided. It looked up at the night sky and I did too.
A full moon hung there. It was close to the horizon and the sky was changing colour. I felt a familiar jolt of pain as the first bone slid out and rearranged itself. The fur retracted and vanished. My paws turned back to single balls of skin at the end of my arm. The balls extended at one end until I had a long flat bit which then split to form fingers. I gagged again as I felt my muzzle fighting back into my body. I couldn't fight the darkness any longer and I passed out.
