I was sitting at the table, with my coven.

"Bella, are you listening?"

"Sure" I said, absentmindedly.

"So, are we meeting up tomorrow? For a circle?" asked
Angela.

"Err...yeah. Isn't it Jake's turn this week?"

"I think so...um...Bella, this may not be the best time to mention this but...when I came over last night..."

"Yes?"

"Do you remember when you went to the loo and the phone rang?"

"Yes?"

"I forgot to tell you who it was" I felt a sense of dread.

"It was Edward," she said. I felt like my heart was going to explode but I struggled and managed to remain calm.

"What did he want?"

"To talk to you. I told him you were busy. He sounded kind of disappointed. Do you think he'll ring again?"

"Maybe, I don't care"

"That's a new one!" laughed Jessica, having crept up on us. My coven consisted of me, Angela, Jessica, Jacob, Mike, Holly (a transfer student from England), her boyfriend Leo, her best friend Jo (however both she and Holly were so alike it was like they were sisters of the soul) and her boyfriend Mike (who was Leo‘s brother. Slightly weird, for humans). Jo was the high priestess of our coven, it was she, and Holly who'd introduced me to Wicca when they'd arrived in Forks.

Angela's boyfriend Ben sat at our table but he didn't join in with our discussions on Wicca and such. He didn't follow our beliefs and that was fine. After the motorbike incident, I'd got closer to Jacob and when I'd brought Holly and Jo to the beach to meet him, he agreed to join our coven. I saw him every weekend now, at least.

"So, if he does call back, what are you going to say?" asked Mike with a slight tone of jealousy "Hang up on him?"

"I'll see what he wants and then I'll decide" my cell vibrated at that instant. I glanced at it. I had long since deleted Edward from my contacts but I still recognized the number. I didn't answer or disconnect him. Instead, I placed the vibrating phone on the table and stared at it.

"Is it...?" asked Angela.

"Yes. I recognize the number" Mike moved for the phone, Holly stopped him.

"Let her decide!" she said, firmly. Mike scowled. If Jo and Holly hadn't both had boyfriends, he might have tried to go out with them. He was a bit annoyed about that.

"I'm going to see how many times it rings before he hangs up. He won't leave a message, I know that much. I'm pretty sure he thinks that if he left a message I'd delete it and ignore him. He wants me to answer. If it rings fifteen times, it goes to voicemail, if it hasn't cut out by then, next time he calls I'll answer"

"Forget that Bella! Just answer the phone!" said Jessica. She just wanted the gossip. I ignored her but I picked up the phone, to stop her stealing it. I counted the rings. Eleven, twelve, thirteen. It stopped. He hadn't waited. I slammed the phone down.

"I think you did the right thing" said Mike.

"Yes, but that's not the right thing for her you're thinking about. You're thinking that if she gets over Edward she'll want to date you. Mike, get over yourself" snapped Holly. Mike scowled.

"Guys, calm down!" said Jo. Holly and Mike contented themselves with glaring at each other. I sighed.

"I have to go" said Jo, suddenly. Holly rose too.

"We'll see you tomorrow at the circle" Jo and Holly were in the year below the rest of us so we only saw them at lunch and at the weekends.

"Bye!" said Angela. I was left wondering, what did Edward want after seven months?
