Chapter 12: You’re Wrong

“RUN!” Irina screamed so loudly, I thought her throat would burst into flames.

“Bella, I told you the first day you were here, to stay away from Edward. I told you that he was mine. You seem to have broken your promise several times…haven’t you?”

My eyes widened as her lips pulled back over her teeth slightly. A growl erupted from Irina’s chest, and a hiss slipped out from between my teeth.

Tanya took on a crouching position and began to circle me. “You had your chance with Edward long ago, but he didn’t want you anymore. How does that make you feel, Bella? Hmm? That your dearest Edward didn’t think you were beautiful enough for him.” As she spoke, she came closer to me.

“You’re wrong.” I choked out.

“Am I? Or did Edward really know it was you the whole time? He left because he didn’t want to be near you anymore. You weren’t good enough. You weren’t beautiful, you weren’t smart enough, and you weren’t the girl for him.”

She was standing in front of me now and our foreheads were almost touching, though she was much taller than I. She looked down and smiled, putting a finger under my chin to lift my head up. “It’s a shame, isn’t it?”

I slapped her hand away from me. “You’re wrong.” I repeated. “Edward did love me, and he still does! He told me when we were in the woods that he was still in love with me! He told me all of the reasons that he left!”

“Don’t listen to her, Bella!” Irina choked out, desperately.

My thoughts were mixed- what if Tanya was telling the truth? Maybe he really had known it was me all along, and he didn’t want to hurt my feelings any longer. Maybe…she was right…

“Shut up, Irina,” she said, and glanced up at Kate who gave one quick nod.

Irina screamed loudly as Kate gripped her arms harder and pulling them upward and in.

“Irina!” I yelled, and turned around to see her on the ground, still thrashing her legs in pain. Her eyes were squeezed shut and she was biting down on her lip.

“You were nothing but a human. A mere fragile, brittle, lifeless human. You were never enough for him and you never will be. So why live? Why live when the one you love will never love you back?”

My throat tightened as my breathing quickened. My mouth was turned down and I was no longer looking at Tanya. I was staring up into the pink sky, wondering how long I had before Edward was gone. I was pondering the decision to live or die and either way, I’d be without Edward.

“How?” I asked Tanya, but it was barely a whisper.

“Bella, don’t- AHH!” Irina’s screams still echoed loudly, and I could barely speak.

“Well, I’d be happy to do the bidding.” Tanya flashed her white teeth at me, and her top lip pulled back over them.

It was too late anyway. Edward surely was dead by now, and Tanya was probably right. It all made sense. Why would he ever love me? Why would he ever love a human? Everything came together. I looked back at Tanya and nodded.

“Excellent.” She said, and got back into her crouch. A hiss escaped through her perfect lips as she stared through my eyes.

I’m sorry, Edward…I love you.

A crash suddenly moved through the forest, and Irina was grabbing at my arms. “Go!” she screamed again. I looked back and saw Kate smash against a tree in the woods beside us. It cracked and split in half.

Tanya leaped forward, and threw me against the ground. I used my feet to kick her off of my torso, and she flew back at least ten yards. I jumped up and looked behind me as Kate rammed into me and Irina.

We soared through the air towards the trees again and I fell against one; it tipped over, knocking two others down as it went.

Tanya was suddenly standing in front of me. “You know, if Irina didn’t have her powers,” she grabbed my hand and pulled me up, throwing me backwards onto the ground again. She spun around and ran towards me. “I would’ve found you and killed you anyway.”

She grabbed the sides of my head, and I remembered that newborns were supposedly much stronger than older vampires. I smiled and kicked her in the stomach as hard as I possibly could.

She let go of my head and I watched as she was thrown back against one of the broken trees. Kate ran towards me and I side chopped her legs, making her fall down. I jerked her back up and she grabbed my arm as I did so throwing me on the ground.

Irina ran by and chucked her into the trees where Tanya was lying, motionless, getting her bearings. Irina grabbed my arm again, and pulled me with her.

We ran as fast as we could, looking back every few moments to see if Tanya and Kate were following us.

Irina seemed more calm now, and I figured that was why she was so tense earlier. I was still afraid that Tanya was telling the truth about Edward knowing who I was and leaving because he didn’t want to be around me anymore.

“They’re coming. They know where Volterra is and they’re following us. But don’t worry, we’re going too fast for them to catch up with us.” Irina said, sprinting even faster than before.

I nodded. I kept pace with her easily, trying to make my strides even wider with each step.

“Are you still thinking about what Tanya said?” Irina asked, dully.

“It all makes sense, Irina.” I whispered.

“I need you to trust me on this, Bella. Edward does love you, and he always has. He had no clue that it was you because you look so much different than when you were human, and that’s the only reason Tanya kept you around when Edward came over- she knew he wouldn’t recognize you if we all kept our thoughts in order. Again, I’m sorry about that.”

“How much longer?” I asked.

“We have about five minutes to go- we’re almost there. We traveled a long way just with the fighting.” She laughed slightly and continued. “Edward has just gotten the courage to ask Aro to kill him, but he is pretty much against it just from what I can see- but it isn’t definite. Edward is still alive though.”

I felt much better knowing that we weren’t too late, and that we weren’t going to be too late. I just didn’t know what I was going to say to him once I got there. I was worried that he wouldn’t believe me, either.

“It’s going to be okay.” Irina said, and that was the one thing that I held onto for comfort. I could only keep telling myself that it was all going to be okay- that I was going to live, and that Edward was going to live. That we would be together, finally. We would be together as Edward and Bella again, and that was all I hoped for.

Irina and I stood outside the gates of Volterra, and by now it was almost nightfall, which was perfect. Irina looked through the gates. “There are two guards about five yards away. Don’t be afraid of what you’re about to see, promise?” Irina said.

I looked at her perplexingly and shook my head. “Okay?”

She latched onto the gate and began to climb over it. She looked around quickly before jumping, and landing quietly on the ground below. She motioned me over as well, and I grabbed onto the metal, dubiously. I leaped over it, landing just as swiftly as she did.

“Here is the scary part…” she held out a hand, and crept up behind one of the guards.

She threw her arms around his neck and squeezed. I put a hand over my mouth to keep from screaming, and he collapsed at her feet. She turned around. “I’m sorry.” She whispered, and motioned me forward again.

I walked behind her as we walked silently past the other guard. “No need to kill two people.” She said when we were far enough away. I shivered, and swallowed loudly.

We walked silently through the nearly vacant streets of Volterra. “This way,” she said as we turned a corner into an alleyway.

We came into the middle of what seemed to be a large market place . There were very few people bustling around buying last minute things. We went slowly through it, and into one last alley before appearing in front of the large castle like mansion.

“This is the Volturi.” Irina said, staring up at the giant castle. “Let’s go.” She walked through the doors and peered around. She waved a hand at me, gesturing me to come in.

“Alright, they would probably be…” she ran over to a hallway. “This way!”

I ran over to her, and she sprinted down the hall. I followed her, and she turned a sharp corner. “In here.” She opened up some sort of passage way, and jumped into it- I followed.

We were in a long, dark hallway now, and Irina was walked down towards a small light at the end, showing through a door. “Ready?” she asked, twisting the knob and opening the door to a wonderful sight.
