This couldn’t be, it was an illusion, nothing more, my mind playing tricks on me, what had Bella called it? Wish fulfillment, well this was wish fulfillment to the highest degree.
“Don’t do this to me,” I whispered, “I can’t take it, I can’t have her leave me again,”
My angel smiled, “I’m here,” she whispered.
“Edward if you’re seeing Bella right now, then she’s either here or we’re sharing the same hallucination, because I see her too.”
I walked up to her, “So you’re really here? This isn’t my imagination?” She nodded, “But, how?”
She smiled, “I didn’t die when I was supposed to, I died to soon, someone screwed up, and I got killed. When I died, I went into limbo, where I stayed seemingly forever, I couldn’t go to heaven because I was not supposed to be dead, and I didn’t do anything bad enough to go to hell, so they just kept me in limbo. It was torture, they have these places where you can watch what’s going on on the earth. I had to watch you suffer, watch your family suffer. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore, I went and talked to Them. I claimed that I was already going through hell watching you all suffer. They gave me two options, go to heaven, or return as a human after five more years in limbo. You can guess what I picked. I tried to warn you that I was coming, but I could only communicate through dreams, so that posed a bit of a problem. I finally figured it out, I could send a vision through Alice, and unfortunately I only got that about 15 minutes ago.”
I stared at her, “You gave up heaven for me.”
She smiled and put her arms around my neck, “I already told you, you’re all the heaven I need.”
As I stood with my head on Edward’s stone chest, I began to feel a little guilty. There was one condition of my return that I hadn’t mentioned, not because I didn’t want to, but because I couldn’t. Because of the fact that I would have been dead by now anyway, They had given me only one year with Edward, unless he changed me within that one year, I had to go back to being dead. It wouldn’t be as abrupt as before, they wouldn’t give Edward the smallest chance to thwart fate.
“Come on! We need to tell everyone else.” Alice was just as hyper as I remembered her.
I laughed, “Gosh I hope they remember me! I’ve missed you all like crazy.”
“They’re all out hunting,” Edward said. “Which is just as well, I should probably clean myself up, I think the last time I changed clothes was two years ago.”
“Exactly one year and 267 days ago,” I replied. He and Alice stared at me, “What? It’s not like you were actually doing much, I got kind of bored.” They both laughed. “I missed that,” I said.
“Missed what?” Edward asked.
“Your laugh,” I replied.
Twenty minutes later I was concealed in a closet with everything imaginable done to mask my scent, awaiting the arrival of my family. Edward was seated on the piano bench waiting for them to arrive as well. The little scheme was Alice’s idea she’d gone to get the rest of the family to come back early from their hunting trip, she was going to tell them that something was going on with Edward. Edward was going to be playing the piano when they came in, then I would make my grand entrance.
I heard the front door click open, and the first opening bars of some song coming from Edward’s piano.
“Edward, what’s all this?” I would recognize Esme’s voice anywhere.
“I’m finally over her Esme!” I heard Edward say, I had to try very hard not to laugh.
“Over her,” Carlisle asked. He sounded as if he was holding a grenade, and he’d pulled out the pin.
“Yup! I even went out today and got a new girlfriend! I brought her home! She’s in the closet!” I could only imagine the looks on his the faces of his family members. “Sweetie, you can come on out!”
I took a deep breath and walked out of the closet, I looked up into five pairs of very shocked golden eyes.
