I was hyperventilating in his arms – so cold, so hard – and had my eyes closed so tight it hurt. Even though my eyes were closed, the tears escaped in streams.

“It's over,” he told me. I opened my eyes and the first thing I saw was him. His dark eyes were soft but still menacing, a warning. They held something deep inside of them, something I didn't understand. His skin still sparkled, dazzling me with it's beauty -

No! I couldn't just focus on him. I glanced around at my surroundings and noticed that we were in a larger, less circular meadow. That meadow held a large house – mansion – that looked like it contained three stories.

The boy walked with me up to the front of the house. He didn't even open the door, someone was already opening it for him. I didn't look to see who it was. He just walked with me to a large couch, and set me down.

I curled up into a ball, sliding away from him. I stifled my sobs. If I was to die, I would die with my pride. I had survived this long, I would not give up my life without a fight.

He shook his head, smiling a wistful smile.

“I don't want to hurt you,” he whispered to me.

“Then why did you bring me here?” I asked, finding my voice at last. His eyebrows pulled together.

“I don't know,” he breathed. He looked up at me. “I didn't want you to be hurt. I don't know what I'd do if you were.” Slowly, very slowly, he sat down next to me, cornering me. I couldn't move.

“Why is your scent so . . . ?” He trailed off. Others entered the room and my breathing sped. I counted . . . six others. I was no match for one, why must I have to fight off seven?

“Hi,” one said. She had a very small frame, with short, black hair that pointed in every direction. She was smiling at me, showing all of her teeth. I shivered.

“Alice,” the boy told her. “Tone down your smile, please.”

“Oh,” she laughed. “Sorry.” A man walked up to me, his hair and his eyes shined a gold I had never seen before. The color in both was too pure. And I had never seen a vampire with golden eyes before.

“I'm Carlisle Cullen,” he told me. “I see you've already met my son, Edward.” He gestured to the boy. Edward. His son.

“Here in the Cullen coven we consider ourselves a family.” The woman who spoke now had light brown hair, caramel colored. She wasn't at all threatening, and it was easy to forget what she was.

“Shall I introduce everyone?” asked the boy – Edward. He stood.

“You've already met Carlisle and Esme. And of course Alice.” He motioned to the girl who had spoken. “This is her husband, Jasper.” He stopped at a man with blond hair. He was slightly larger than Edward. “And this is Rosalie and Emmett.” The woman was gorgeous. Her long blond hair flowed down onto her back. Next to her was a very large man, with dark, curly hair. He was the most frightening out of all of them, Edward following in a close second.

“As you probably know, some vampires have . . . talents,” He continued. “Alice can see what the future holds . . . based off others decisions. If you change your mind, your whole future changes. Jasper can influence the emotions of others, and I can hear thoughts.”

Please let me go!! I screamed at him in my mind.

“All minds are open to me . . . except yours.” His family looked at him, shocked. I was very confused. Could Alice see me? Could . . . Jasper . . . effect me? I began to panic. All I wanted was for everything to be back the way it was. The way it was before vampires revealed themselves.

A sudden calm came over me and suddenly all I wanted to do was sleep.

“That would be Jasper,” pointed out Edward. I looked towards him with heavy eyelids. He reached his two arms out to me, then paused.

“Would you mind if I carried you?” he asked, like a gentleman – gentleman? Bella, you must be out of your mind! - and raised an eyebrow in question. I just stared at him, I wasn't sure what to do. I could barely keep my eyes open, yet I didn't want him touching me.

I was about to answer when the suddenly powerful blackness washed over me, swallowing me whole.
