What if Jacob imprinted on Bella and Edward's leaving pulled them closer? What if Bella chose her Sun over the Eclipse?

In honor of the upcoming Twilight Saga: New Moon release in November, I have created a story that in my opinion, should have followed New Moon. Hope you like it.

Chapter 5: Flightless Bird

"Can you honestly look in my eyes and tell me that you don't love me anymore?"

"I'll always love you, Edward...in a way. But it's time for a change and I'm tired of trying to be something I will never be. I'm human, Edward, and like you said, time heals all wounds for my kind. Goodbye."

Then, just as I did that horrible day in the woods, Bella stood up on her toes kissing me lightly on my forehead. A poisoned kiss, taking all the love out of my heart. She walked out of the door never looking back, never hesitating. She was really gone.

"Did that really just happen?" Alice squeaked, clutching Jasper for support.

"Did you see the look in her eyes? She was flat, detached...cold," Carlisle said, trying to make sense of what just happened.

"I felt anger from her, but nothing else. There was something underneath, but she kept covering it up with calm feelings. I didn't have to calm her. She was so impassive she calmed herself."

"I did that to her," I said, pulling my family from their musings.

"No, Edward. What's happened to Bella is no one's fault," Esme said, trying to comfort me.

"It's my fault. I left her broken and cold and nothing can ever change that."

They continued trying to talk to me, to make me feel better, but I could no longer hear them. I could only hear the sweetest and most heartbreaking things Bella ever said to me.

"Edward, why did you save me? You could just let the venom spread. I could be like you by now."

"You don't know what you're saying. You don't want this."

"I want you. Always."

"I'm not going to end your life for you."

"I'm dying already. Every second I get closer, older."

"That's the way it's supposed to be."

"Alice said that she saw me like you. I heard her."

"Her visions change."

"Yeah, based on what people decide. I've decided."

"So that's what you dream about? Becoming a monster?"

"I dream about being with you, forever."

"Edward," Esme called frantically.

I looked up realizing that I had somehow ended up on the floor. The look in Bella's eyes that night when she declared her love for me began to haunt me endlessly. How did my sweet Bella go from my beautiful, flightless bird to the angry, bitter girl who tried to break my heart?

"I can't...I have to get out of here!"

I ran as fast as I could out of the house, leaving the pleading voice of my family behind me.

"Would you mind telling me what all of that was about?" Leah asked, stealing a few glances at me.

"How much did you hear?"

"Enough to guess that you and the...that you and Edward aren't together anymore." She said his name as if she thought calling him one of the many disparaging names they gave vampires would only exacerbate the situation.

"No, we aren't."

"So...does that mean I'm taking you to Charlie's house?"

"Jake's house?"

"Yep," I said popping the "p" the way Jake does. We arrived in La Push a few minutes later. Jake was still sitting at the campfire with the rest of the guys. "Do you think you should tell them?"

"No, I think that's for you and Jacob to handle," Leah said.

I got out of the car, bag on my shoulder as Jacob ran to me. "Bella, is everything okay? We all heard when you asked Leah to pick you up."

"Yeah, Jake can I talk to you, about that? In private."

"Yeah, let's go up to the house."

Jacob wrapped his arm around me and walked me up to the house. We could hear Sam probing Leah for information.

"...that was all about?"

"Just the end of an eclipse, Sam."

We walked into the house quietly. Billy was already asleep. We walked into Jake's bedroom. I sat on his bed while he pulled a chair from his desk, sitting it in front of the bed. He sat down, taking my hands.

"Talk to me, Bells."

"Jake, why didn't you tell me that you imprinted on me?"

He groaned and rubbed his hand over his face. "That damn, Leah. The girl couldn't keep a secret to save her life."

"Then it's true?"

"Yeah, it's true. I imprinted on you the day you got your truck."

"Jake, why didn't you say something?"

"Bella, I had no idea I imprinted on you. I started talking to Billy about you and he figured it out. Back then, I didn't know about the werewolf thing so he just said it was another legend of our ancestors. Then when I saw you again, when you came to the rez with your friends, I knew it was true."

"Oh, Jake. You should have said something."

"What could I say, Bella? ‘I know we just reconnected, but I'm madly in love with you, Bella, and every time we're apart I hurt like a thousand burning fires?'"

"Yeah! Something, anything so that you wouldn't feel this pain."

"I didn't want to scare you and when I realized that you at least liked me too, you were already caught in that bloodsucker's web."

"So you would just let me go off with him while you suffered in silence?"

"If it meant you could be happy-yes."

"I love you, Jake."

He smiled softly. "I know. You love your big brother, Jake, I know."

"No, Jake. I mean I love you."

His smile faded and he sat up in the chair. "What? Bella, what are you talking about?"

"I thought that those months we spent together I survived because I had to for Charlie, but that wasn't it at all. I survived because of you, Jake. You're my friend, my sun, my love."

"Bella...please don't joke about something like that."

"I'm not joking, Jacob."

"But you're in love with him," Jake said, frowning as if the thought caused him pain.

"I was, but then he broke my heart. The Bella that loved Edward above everything else, the Bella that would give her life, her humanity to be with him...she died in the forest that day. I survived Jacob, and I love you. I love you," I said, sliding off the bed onto my knees before him. Jacob got out of the chair, falling to his knees as well. He brushed away my tears, taking my hand in his.

"I've waited forever to hear you say those words to me. Say it again."

"I love you, Jake. I love you."

He grabbed my face, crushing his lips against mine. His hands gripped my waist as mine knotted in his hair. I moaned once and it only made him kiss me harder. This was the way a kiss was supposed to be.
