Chapter 19 – Hells Bells.
Today was the day, the first day of December and tomorrow was the day that Austin would be finally coming home. Miraculously, things seemed to finally be falling into place.
Thanksgiving was tough, but Jack and I chose to stay home and enjoy movies and pizza while Jasper joined Rose at their dads, and Edward partook in the annual Cullen Thanksgiving dinner. We had been invited to both, but opted to stay home and enjoy each other’s company instead. It was a little hard to celebrate Thanksgiving with Austin still in the hospital and having three family members still overseas, but I had a lot of things to be thankful for this year, Jack had finally come home and Austin was safe in the hospital; alive.
I was excited to be bringing Austin home tomorrow. Carlisle was able to help us find a low rise hospital bed that would allow Austin to be able to lift himself to and from his wheel chair for the next month or so, until he received full function of his right leg again. I was already pre-planning a routine for the three of us Swan’s, to accommodate all his physical therapy appointments.
“Morning Boys,” I said, greeting Jasper and Jack as I entered the kitchen, fully ready and prepared to face the day ahead.
“You almost ready to go, Bells?” Jasper asked, leaning over the kitchen counter.
“I’ll be ready to go in ten minutes. Five if someone toasts me a bagel. Hint Hint.” I said, batting my eyelashes and giving him the pout Alice taught me how to use.
“I got it.” He sighed, heading over to the cupboard to get the bagels out. “Why don't you grab a coffee and sit down.”
“Thank you Jasper!” I praised, walking over to the counter to pour myself a coffee.
“Morning Bells, Sleep well?” Jack asked while taking a sip of his own coffee.
“Yea, I was up a little late thinking about things we needed to get ready for tomorrow... are you still going to be able to pick up rail handles at the hardwood store today?” I asked, pouring some coffee into a mug.
“Yea, I got it covered. I'm going to head up to Port Angelas after you leave and sign up for school then I’ll pick them up on the way back. I should have them installed before you get home.”
I nodded in agreement. “Are you sure your heart’s still set on becoming a firefighter? You know I hear they can always use few more fast-food workers in the world. Just think all the fries you can eat!”
“Even though that does sound tempting, my heart’s really set on this Bells.”
“M’kay, I guess I can support another one of my brother’s dangerous dreams,” I sighed, getting up an embracing him in warm loving hug, “Just promise me you’ll always come home.” I whispered, sadly, as Jasper passed me my bagel.
“I promise Baby girl, I'm never going to leave you again.” He sighed, kissing my forehead. “Plus I think Austin or even Esme would come hunt me down in the afterlife if I did.” He laughed.
“Thanks for ruining the moment, you Jackass.” I laughed, giving him a playful shove. “Anyway, Jasper and I should be getting to school, see you after?”
“Yep, oh and here-” he said tossing me a set of keys, “why don't you take the Harley, you might as well enjoy it while you can, no way in hell dad’s going to let you go anywhere near it once he gets home.”
“Yeeee!” I shrieked, “You’re the greatest-brother ever!”
He laughed, “Don’t let it go to your head. Just leave me the keys to your truck so I can go run those few errands.”
I nodded. “Okay dearest brother, common Jazz, I’ll give you a lift to school, but I'm driving.” I grinned, hardly able to contain
“Even though that does sound tempting darlin’,” he grimaced, “I think I'm going to opt to drive myself to school today, so I’ll be able witness everyone’s reactions when Hells Bells arrives.” He taunted. “I might even bring a camera to record Edward’s reaction. Trust me, that’s something where all going to want to watch for the many years to come” he chuckled, waving goodbye, before making his way out of the house to his Audi.
“Oh, Edward needs to learn to relax” I groaned to my brother. “I'm seriously not the dainty, fragile girl that he thinks I am.”
“Just give me the word and I’ll have him taken care of,” Jack mused.
“No need, I have no problem putting the boy in his place,” I laughed.
“That a girl!” Jack praised. “Anyway, you better get going before I regain my common sense about letting my sixteen year old sister go off driving around on my Harley.”
“Okay Big Brother, Thank you!” I yelled, running out of the house before he had the chance to change his mind.
I merrily skipped my way to the driveway, removing the bike’s plastic cover before tossing my bag over my shoulder and hoping on to the bike. I stuck the key in the ignition and the bike immediately roared to life. I smiled slowly and swooned; I immediately fell in love with the sound.
I revved the engine and wrenched the handlebars, taking off soaring out of the driveway. I sped down the open road, not even bothering to conceal my wide grin. Feeling a bit adventurous, I slammed my foot down on the acceleration pedal with all the force I could muster, causing the bike to shoot forward like a speeding bullet from a gun. God how I loved this feeling of an adrenaline rush! Within mere minutes I was already mere metres away from an astounded looking Edward, standing with Rosalie, Jasper and the rest of his family. Everyone, with the exception of Jasper, were all staring open-mouthed at me, in the middle of the crowded school parking lot.
My friends continued to stand around in a stunned silence, staring wide-eyed at the space where I had just parked, when suddenly, Emmett let out an ear piercing wolf whistle, breaking the stunned silence of the now-gathered crowd. “Damn, Bella!” he smirked, “Since when are you such a badass?”
“Emmett!” Rosalie hissed, slapping him across the back of his head.
“Damn, baby that hurt!” he whined. “Excuse me for stating the obvious.”
“Hey, no one said Bella Swan can’t be cool,” I retorted, smoothly.
Eventually everyone crowded in around the bike and I explained that I was just temporarily borrowing Jack’s new baby. Everyone seemed to loosen up with the exception of Edward, who was standing there quietly, looking livid. Finally getting frustrated, I broke the silence between the two of us.
“What Edward?” I said, letting out a sigh.
“How can you all be so cool about this? This is absolutely PREPOSTEROUS, Bella! I seriously underestimated you! I thought you were smarter than this.” Edward fumed, before furiously taking off for class, not even bothering to wait for me like he usually did.
I stood there stunned, Edward had never so much as raised his voice at me before and now he was telling me off? “Hey, I’ll meet you guys at lunch,” I said to Rose and the guys, before running off after Edward.
I ended up catching him, just before he entered our English class. I grabbed him by his shirt collar and wrenched him around so that he was facing me. “God, what the hell crawled up your ass this morning Edward?! What was that back there?” I demanded, confused.
“You are NOT riding that,” he growled forbiddingly.
“I think you’ll find I am, Edward.” I shot back.
“NO!” Edward shouted. His beautiful voice was abnormally furious.
It was hard to pretend that I didn’t find his anger more than a little bit attractive, but it was also rather irritating. He had no right telling me what I could or couldn't do. If he hadn’t noticed, I’ve been taking care of myself quite well on my own for the past three months, and I didn't need is help now.
“Edward, you’re being ridiculous.” I sighed, frustrated. At this point a lot of our classmates were making their way to English, eyeing us funny as they entered the classroom.
Edward chose to ignore their presence and continued on with his spiel. “I'm being ridiculous? If you hadn’t noticed you can hardly walk across a flat surface without tripping and now you’re telling me that you've taken up riding motorcycles? MOTORCYCLES! Of all the stupid, reckless, insane things to do Bella, you had to take up motorcycles?”
“Why do you care?” I asked, befuddled.
“Mr. Cullen. Mrs Swan.” Our English teacher, Mrs. Warman interrupted, “will you two be gracing us with your presence today, or are you going to continue this disruptive argument in the hallway?”
“We’re coming Mrs. Warman,” we both sighed, following her into the classroom.
“God, I can’t believe how Pigheaded Edward’s being over this whole motorcycle thing.” I complained to Rosalie, as I sat down in my seat beside hers in Spanish. “We ended up going at it before English class; he’s being such an ass!”
“Aww how cute, you two are already bickering like an old married couple,” she chuckled.
“We are not!” I snapped.
“Oh you are SO in denial. Trust me; you’re the only one around here who doesn’t see it.”
“Oh, shut up!” I moaned, throwing my head into my hands.
“Well if you ask me-”
“Which I'm not!” I interrupted.
“Well, lucky for you I’ll tell you anyway. You two have been all puppy-dog’s and rainbows for far too long. The real world was bound to catch up with you two eventually.”
“What happened to Hoe’s before Bro’s?” I asked. “I helped you with the Chuck fiasco, now you’re supposed to help me with Edward.”
“You want me to take a bat to Edward’s Volvo?” she asked with a wry smile.
“No! That’s not what I meant” I groaned.
“I know I'm just enjoying this” she laughed. “Don't worry, I’ll help you.”
The rest of the class was spent in silence. I just wanted to get this day over as soon as possible. I had been here a little over an hour and I was already emotionally exhausted.
Ominous rain clouds loomed overhead, threatening a torrential downpour as I rode my way home. The rest of the day had pretty much had been a recurrence of English class. Tensions were high between Edward and I, and the rest of the gang were trying to run interference between us, trying to keep us from having another public blow out. As soon as the final bell rang I tore out of there, trying to distance myself as much as I could from Edward.
As soon as I had the bike parked in the drive way, I hopped off and ran in the house. I threw open the front door and rushed in, to find Jack lounging in the living room. Without a second thought, I leaped onto the couch and buried my head into his lap and started to sob.
“What’s wrong baby girl? What happened?”Jack asked as I let out all the grief I had been holding in all day. I tried to respond, but all that came out were broken sobs.
“What’s going on?” Jasper asked, as he entered the house to find Jack comforting me as I sobbed.
“I have no clue, what the hell happened today?!” Jack asked Jasper. “She’s been crying ever since she got home.” Jasper went on to tell Jack about the day’s events with Edward.
“Edward and I got into a huge fight.” I sobbed. “He doesn’t like the idea of me riding your motorcycle.”
“What?” Jack asked. He was still confused so he looked to Jasper for answers. Jasper filled him in all that went down at school.
“That Punk-ass as no right telling you what you can do. I ought to march over there and rip ‘em a new one!”
“I don't want to talk about it anymore,” I sniffed.
After I got calmed down enough, I ran upstairs and through on some sweats and then Me, Jasper and Jack settled into the living room for the evening. The boys busied themselves with a football game, while I curled up on the couch with a book with Riley snuggled tenderly into my lap. I wasn’t really up to cooking tonight, so the guys elected to order a pizza.
When the doorbell rang, Jack got off the couch and grabbed some cash, assuming it was the pizza-delivery boy.
“Well you have some balls showing your face around here!” I heard Jack seethe, when he answered the door.
“I just need to talk to Bella. I need to explain-”
“Oh no, I think you’ve done enough for one day!” Jack spat.
I silently asked Jasper what was going on, but he just shrugged showing he was just as confused about the confrontation as I was.
“Please, I just need to talk to her...” I heard someone plead to my brother. I moved Riley off my lap so I could get up off the couch. I walked over to the door to find Edward in some sort of quarrel with my brother.
“Edward, what are you doing here?” I asked as I shoved my annoyed brother out of the doorway.
“I'm sorry for being such an ass today Bella! I was mad and I unjustly took that out on you. Please talk to me, I need to fix this!” he begged.
“Fine.” I sighed, letting him in. “We’ll be talking upstairs.” I called over my shoulder to Jack.
“I don't think so young lady!” Jack protested. “I don't want you anywhere near him!”
“Do you honestly think he’s going to try anything with you down here, getting ready to attack him like’s he’s your prey?” I asked, mystified.
“Fine” he grumbled. “Just keep your bedroom door open!” he warned.
I just rolled my eyes at his complete absurdness. “Come on Edward,” I sighed, leading the way up the stairs to my room.
I went in the room and sat down on my bed. “You wanted to talk, so talk.” I said, signalling for him to begin.
“Why do you like it so much, anyway?” he asked, rubbing his hands through his messy-bronze hair.
“Why do I like what? Riding motorcycles?” I asked. He nodded in confirmation.
“Just try to explain it,” he pled.
“I don't know Edward.” I sighed. “It’s like for a couple of moments it’s just me and the motorcycle, I can just get lost in the adrenaline sensation. It’s like for a brief period of time, there’s no war, no worry, no family members in danger, it’s just me and the motorcycle and for those few moments, everything’s right in the world.”
“I guess I can understand that.” He sighed, taking a seat next to me on the bed. “I just wish you could have picked a safer escape than riding around on your brother’s death trap.”
“I’ll make you a deal, I promise not to make a big deal about the riding any more, IF you allow me to purchase you a riding helmet.”
“Edward, that’s really not necessary.” I protested.
“It’s not so much for you, as it’s more for my own peace of mind. I don't know what I’d do if anything happened to you Bella.”
“Why do you care so much?” I whispered, looking upward, so that I was face to face, starring into his beautiful, deep green eyes.
“Bella,” he said, brushing my hair behind my ear to get a better view of my face. “I don't know what I’d do if anything ever happened to you. I can’t help but think that the Swan genetics for danger are going to rub off on you and you’re going to go running off to war or into a burning building or something...”
“Edward I can’t promise you that I'm going to pass up a worthwhile opportunity if it came up just because it’s dangerous. Yes my family puts their lives on the line each day, but they do it to help others and save innocent lives. It just who we are, no matter how much I want to fight it. When Jack told me he was going to become a firefighter, it nearly killed me to think of another Swan putting his life on the line, but I’ll support him because that’s who we are. Swans.”
“And I can’t promise you I'm not going to continue to look out for your safety, but that’s a conversation we can save for another time.”
“Okay Edward.” I sighed, getting up off my bed. “You better go before my brother storms up here and throws you out. I’ll see you tomorrow at school.”
“Okay, love.” He sighed, standing up. “But before I go, there’s something I need to do first.”
“What?” I asked.
“This.” He whispered as he leaned down closer to me. My eyes grew wide with nervousness when his face was mere inches from mine. He closed the small gap between us and pressed his lips softly against mine. His warmth radiated through my body, filling me with life.
As soon as he backed away, I stood there shocked. Raising my fingers, I touched my lips as I looked over at him. “You kissed me.”
“Yea, um, I think I did.”
