Chapter 21 – Protective Big Brother

Jack POV

After a day full of running errands in preparation of Austin’s homecoming tomorrow, I found myself lounging around in the living room, sprawled out on the couch with Riley, waiting for Bella to return home from school. Honestly, I can’t say that I missed school much, out of the five of us Swan siblings; I was definitely the runt of the litter when it came to academics.

I wasn’t by far what anyone would call ‘book smart’, I much preferred classes like Gym and Shop to Math and English. It was just who I was, more of a hands on type of learner, and I guess that could be considered a contributing factor in why I never felt compelled to apply to University after I graduated from High School. So when I felt like I was being pressured, I took off opting to travel the country instead. It most definitely wasn’t the brightest decision to make, abandoning my family like that, but with four brothers and sisters, I needed to break free and be on my own for a while.

I was broken from my reverie when I heard the sound of the Harley’s engine come to a stop in the driveway. I guess Bella was home from school.

Before I could get off the couch to greet my sister she had the front door thrown open and was soaring from the entryway to the living room in a matter of mere seconds. Out of nowhere she hopped on the couch and buried her face in my lap, breaking out in winded sobs. I was a little stunned to be seeing her like this, so I tried to sooth her and calm her down by running my fingers gently through her long, mahogany hair.

“What’s wrong baby girl? What happened?” I asked as I listened to her wail. I’ll admit, I'm a tough guy, and it takes a lot to affect me, but listening to my baby sister cry out in pain was absolutely breaking me.

“What’s going on?” Jasper asked when he entered the house. He looked a little shocked to be seeing Bella have a breakdown in the middle of the living room. I was starting to lose my patience. ‘What the hell happened at that damn school to destroy my baby sister like this? If this shit kept up than I was homing schooling her. I won’t stand for anyone to hurt my baby sister!’

“I have no clue, what the hell happened today?!” I spat, answering him. He looked a little taken back by my rage.

I took a cleansing breath before continuing, it wasn’t fair for me to be taking my anger out on Jasper. “She’s been crying ever since she got home.” I went on to say, hoping Jasper would be able to elaborate on how my baby sister could go from leaving the house happy and carefree to coming home a freaking wreck! It was just so confusing; ‘What the hell happened over the past eight hours to change everything so drastically?!,

“Edward and I got into a huge fight.” I heard my sister sob, as she briefly raised her head off my lap, long enough to reply. “He doesn’t like the idea of me riding your motorcycle.”

“What?” I asked, still confused. I looked to Jasper to elaborate and he went on to fill me on everything that went down at school. He told me how Edward had blown a gasket and called my sweet and endearing sister stupid and reckless for wanting to drive a motorcycle. By the time he had finished the story, I was fuming. ‘Who did that little runt think he was telling my sister what she could or couldn't do?! The last time I checked it was still the 21st century and my sister didn't need some punk dictating her actions.’

“That Punk-ass has no right telling you what you can do! I ought to march over there and rip ‘em a new one!” I seethed, no longer able to keep my anger in check. There were few things that could really get a rise out of me, but messing with my baby sister was definitely one of them!

“I don't want to talk about it anymore,” she sniffed, resting her head on my shoulder. Her appearance had definitely become more dishevelled, but I doubt she even noticed with the current mood she was in. Her hair was sprawled out all over the place and the little make up that she wore was running down her face.

After she had calmed down enough, she ran upstairs to get freshened up.

“Agh!” I screamed, punching a whole in the wall out of frustration. “Damnit!” I hissed, shaking my hand in pain. Probably not that smartest move...

“Jack!” Jasper scolded. “You gotta calm down! It’s not going to help matters if Bella comes back downstairs to find you like this. It’s only going to stress her out more if she see’s you tearing apart the living room.” Jasper said, trying to reason with me as he moved a picture to disguise the whole.

“Fine.” I grunted. I would let this go for now, but the next time I saw the little runt’s face would be another story all together.

When Bella returned back downstairs she had her hair up in a ponytail and was sporting a comfy pair of sweats. The three of us settled into the living room for the evening. Jasper and I got lost in the football game while we waited for the pizza we ordered to arrive. Every now and then I would chance a look over at Bella, checking to see how she was. She looked so sombre curled up on the couch reading with Riley snuggled with her on her lap. It was like he knew she was having a rough day and wanted to stay near her. The dog absolutely adored her.

When the doorbell rang, I got off the couch and grabbed some cash out of my jacket near the door. I didn’t think twice about checking to see who it was since I assumed it was just the pizza-delivery boy.

But as I opened the door I came face-to-face with the last person I ever wanted to see.

“Well you have some balls showing your face around here!” I yelled. If the little punk thought I was going to willingly let him in the house then he had another thing coming.

“I just need to talk to Bella. I need to explain-” he tried to say before I interrupted his nonsense.

“Oh no, I think you’ve done quite enough for one day!” I spat, leaning against the doorway making sure to block any chance of entrance he had into the house.

“Please, I just need to talk to her...” he begged.

“Edward, what are you doing here?” I heard Bella’s soft voice ask from behind me. Before I knew it she had pried her way past me and was forcefully pushing me out of the doorway. Not wanting to hurt him in front of her, I reluctantly took a step back.

“I'm sorry for being such an ass today Bella! I was mad and I unjustly took that out on you. Please talk to me, I need to fix this!” I heard Edward cry to my sister.

“Fine.” she sighed, letting him in. God, sometimes my sister could be far too nice then people deserved. “We’ll be talking upstairs.” she called, leading Edward towards the stairs.

Oh hell no!’I thought, making a move stop them.

“I don't think so young lady!” I protested. “I don't want you anywhere near him!”

“Do you honestly think he’s going to try anything with you down here, getting ready to attack him like’s he’s your prey?” she asked defiantly as she tried to reason with me.

“Fine” I grumbled, conceding defeat. “Just keep your bedroom door open!” I warned, I was most definitely too young to be an uncle and I wanted the right to storm in there and break things up if need be.

She just rolled her eyes at me. “Come on Edward,” she sighed, before leading the little runt up the stairs behind her.

“Well... that was unexpected.” I heard Jasper laugh from behind me.

“Uh- Shut up!” I groaned, plopping down on the couch in the living room. “What do you think there doing up there?” I asked him as he took a seat beside me.

“Do you really want to know?” He laughed, causing me to groan again. ‘Why, Oh why couldn't my sister go to an all girl school! Life would be so much easier!’

--- Ring --- Ring --- Ring! ---

I shot Jasper a look saying that there was no way in hell I was getting off the couch to answer that.

“Fine” he grumbled, reaching for the portable. “Swan Residence” he answered. “Yep, just one second” he smirked, triumphantly throwing me the phone.

“Ugh- Hello?” I grumbled into the phone.

“Hey man, it’s Austin.” He replied.

“Oh... hey, is everything okay?” I asked, wary of why he was suddenly calling me from the hospital.

“I'm fine” he griped, “I'm just ready to escape this hell whole. You still breaking me out tomorrow?”

“Yea, I’ll be there after school,” I sighed.

“Geez, don't be too happy now. God what the hell crawled up your ass?” he asked.

“Sorry man, I guess I'm just a little pissed at the moment. Edward gave Bella hell today, and now their upstairs...”

“Are you crazy?! You willing left our baby sister alone with that hormonal teenage boy?! What the fuck were you thinking?!” he yelled through the phone.

“God, calm down! It’s not like I willingly let them go, but she gave me some crap about trusting her!” I defended.

“I trust her it’s that kid we shouldn't trust. Now hang up the damn phone and get up there and break them up! NOW!” he yelled.

I quickly mumbled a goodbye. ‘Oh god, if he so much as touched her I was going to kill him! And then Austin was most likely going to kill me for letting it happen!’ I thought before racing up the stairs.

“I know Bella but you do this to me, love. No one’s ever made me feel like this before,” I heard the twerp say before attacking my sister with his lips. ‘Oh hell no! I don't think so!’

How dare the little punk ass go off on my sister then waltz into the place and start kissing her. ‘Oh this ends now!’ I thought before storming into the room.

I lunged over and ripped the little shit disturber off my sister before throwing him face first against the wall, probably a little harder then was really necessary, but at the moment I really didn't care. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” I roared.

“Jack!” I heard my sister shriek, “what the hell was that for?!”She asked as she knelt down beside Edward, allowing him to rest his head on her lap.

At this point I was fuming. Bella had always been so trustworthy and honest; she had insured me that nothing significant was going to happen. “You said I could trust you. You said all you would be doing is talking. That didn't look like talking to me!” I shouted at Edward.

“Hey, what’s with all the-” Jasper said before noticing an angered Jack getting ready to attack Edward. Without thinking Jasper grabbed hold of Jack, pinning his arms securely behind my back.

“What’s going on Bells?” he asked her, confused.

“Jack walked in on Edward and I kissing....” I heard her mumble, causing her cheeks to flare up.

“Dude!” Jasper smirked, giving Edward an approving look.

“Agh!” I groaned, trying to break Jasper’s hold. I didn’t like what Jasper’s tone was insinuating. “That’s my baby sister you’re talking about!”

“Come on Jack, we don't we head out so you can cool down,” he suggested, forcefully pushing me in the direction of the door. I chanced one last look at Bella when she wasn’t looking. She looked distraught and mad. I knew she was going to be mad about what happened, hell I was mad about what happened.

Jasper led me down the stairs, not bothering to loosen his grip, which was probably a smart move on his part seeing as how I was this close to going back there and ripping out the son-of-a-bitch’s heart!

“Man, what the hell was that back there?” Jasper asked, finally releasing me from his death grip, when we had made it outside.

“You weren’t there; you didn't see how he was all over her!” God I was going to have to bleach my brain out to get the image of my baby sister making out with that sleaze-ball out of my head.

“It’s obvious he’s just using her!” I yelled.

“Jack, it’s obvious you don't know Edward as well as you think you do. He would never do something like that to Bella, he respect for her more than that!” he exclaimed.

“You need to calm down and be less rigid. He likes Bella, and Bella likes him, and if you want her to be happy, then you’re going to have to accept that. Period.” He stated.

“But they were making out!” I yelled, frustrated. God, I was never going to be able to get rid of the picture of my sister kissing him.

“Was he really, or are you making it out to be worse than it actually is?” he asked, smirking and eyebrow at me. The son-of-a-bitch was smirking at ME!

He was all over her!” God, Austin was never going to let me live this down!

“Okay.” He replied curtly.

“How can you be so calm about this?”

“Listen Jack, there both my friends and I just want to see them both happy. I’ve been friends with Edward for quite some time and he’s really not as bad as you make him out to be. It’s nice to see him interested in someone finally after all this time. The five of us have always been close, and we’ve pretty much paired off. Alice and I have been together for a few years now, and even though Emmett and Rose have just now gotten around getting together, they’ve always had an especially close connection. Edward has pretty much been reduced to the fifth wheel, but all that changed when your family moved here.

“I’ve honestly never seen Edward as happy as when Bella moved to Forks. They complete each other. It’s like she was the missing piece to our group. So yes, I do support this. Edward’s not stupid enough to do anything to jeopardize his relationship with her. I know you want to go all big brother on her, hell, I wanted to do the same thing when Rosalie started dating! God knows if I did, maybe the whole Chuck predicament could have been prevented. But you gotta let her go and trust that she’ll make the right choices.”

I must admit, Jasper pacified my anger quite a bit. Although that doesn’t mean I'm going to be singing Edward’s praises anytime soon.

“What if you’re wrong, Jack? What if he hurts her? She’s been through so much in these past few years. First with mom passing away, then the guys enlisting, and finally all this shit with Austin. I just don't want to see her hurt anymore.”

“I’ve gotten to get to know Bella very well over these past few months. She’s done a lot for me and my sister in the short amount of time. God she took me in and gave me a home, for crying out loud! If I thought there was any chance of her getting hurt I would step in, but I truly believe that Edward has only her best interests in mind.”

“Just like he did when he went off on her about riding the bike?!” I scoffed.

“I won’t disagree with the fact that Edward over-reacted. He’s just worried about her. I don't know what he’d do if something happened to her. When she was with Austin in Seattle for those few weeks, he was a complete mess. He wanted to be there for her and he was upset with himself because he couldn't. Ever since she’s returned, he’s pretty much vowed to shelter her from whatever danger he could. He doesn’t like to see her hurt.”

“Fine. But that doesn’t mean he can dictate her actions.”

“Fair enough, now do you think you’re going to be able to put your overprotective feelings aside for Bella? Can you trust that she’ll make the right choices?” he asked.

“Yes,” I sighed, giving in. “But this doesn’t mean I’m pro Edward now. I’ll support them for as long as she decides to keep the little runt around.”

“Oh... and Jasper? This whole situation stays between you and I. I don't need Austin riding my ass about this.”

“What about Bella and Edward?” he asked, pointing out the obvious.

“Yea, I don't think either of them will be spilling the beans about their bedroom rendez-vous anytime soon.”

“Good point, anyway I'm heading in, you ready to face the music?” He asked.

“Nah, I'm gonna stay out here for another couple of minutes and clear my head.”

“Okay, come in when you’re ready” he called before disappearing through the door.

When it was all said and done, I couldn't help but think, ‘I might not be able to stop her from dating him, but that doesn’t mean I can’t influence her to dump him, or better yet attempt to scare him away... I'm more then certain that Austin in the guys would be all for helping me.’ I smirked, thinking of all the possibilities.

I couldn't blow it just yet. I needed reinforcements before I could take him down. I didn't want the blame to fall solely on me when shit it the fan, plus I knew the guys would be down to helping me even if they were still mad about my taking off.

Luckily for me, Edward took off shortly after Jasper and I re-entered the house. I guess the loser got to live another day...
