Alice and I stayed like that long after the bell rang, by the time that I had composed myself enough; fifth period was already halfway done. She walked me to my biology class, and then told me she’d catch up with me after school.
When I got to my fifth period bio, I just passed my slip to the teacher and whispered to him that I had a family issue to take care of and he just nodded and pointed to a seat in the back.
Since I was in an advance placement program back in Phoenix, the faculty decided that I could be placed in the Senior History and Biology classes here in Forks, since I excelled in both of those subjects. So my schedule was a mix of both senior and junior classes. Lucky enough for me, Emmett ended up being in my Biology class.
I walked to the back and sat down in the empty seat next to him, apparently his old partner transferred out of this class to take a shop class or something. I was just relieved to sit with someone that I already knew.
As I was sitting down Emmett reached over and gave me a giant hug, practically suffocating me in the process. Most of the class turned around to stare at us, but Emmett couldn't have cared less.
“Hey beautiful, how’s it going?” he asked.
“Not bad Em, little tired though” I laughed.
I could already tell that Emmett and I were going to get along great. In the short time that I’ve known him I could already tell he was just a big sweetheart. On the outside he looks like a jock, and if you didn’t know him you would never know just how smart, sweet, sensitive, funny, charming and lovable he is. He reminded me a lot of my oldest brother Tory, who was always WAY overprotective when it came to looking after his ‘little sis’.
Apparently Em and Jasper were also these big shot football players.
“So when’s the big game?” I asked.
“Next Friday, though coach is running us ragged trying to get ready for the new season,” he laughed. “Do you play in any sports?”
“Um, I used to play volleyball and I like to run, but that’s about it. Being un-coordinated doesn’t really help when it comes to sports.” I joked.
He started to laugh, probably remembering my fall in the cafeteria. Which reminds me; he never mentioned anything about my emotional breakdown, I guess Alice had warned them that I didn't want to talk about it.
Emmett and I spent the entire biology class with him sharing stories with me about him and the gang.
“Jasper, Ed and I have been best buds ever since middle school when Jazz and his sister, Rose, moved here with their family from Alaska, the five of us have been inseparable ever since. Although things got a little awkward when Alice and Jasper started getting feelings for each other, Ed and I definitely didn't take too kindly to that, things were a little tense between us for a while after that. But eventually we got over it when we realized how happy he makes her.”
I was getting a little sad when he mentioned how close they were. I don't know how I could ever expect them to accept me as a part of them when their already so close. I quickly cleared out my thoughts and decided to ask about Edward since I haven’t got a chance to meet him yet.
“Hey Emmett, I have a question, who's this Edward? I’ve heard you all talk about him, but I haven’t seen him yet.”
“Ah yes, Eddie-boy.” He smiled, “Edward’s my younger brother, he’s actually Alice’s twin. He usually hangs out with us, but he’s away for the next couple days competing at a cross-country meet down in Oregon.” An athlete, I thought, impressive.
“What about Rosalie, Em? I don't think she likes me too much.” I stated.
“Rose will be Rose. She doesn’t trust easily but she’s a sweetheart once she warms up to you. I have a feeling you two are gonna get along great.” He laughed. He went on to say how she was a fierce, bad ass, strong willed woman who happened to also be very nurturing, smart, and caring.
“Beware of her though, she may be beautiful but she can be vicious if someone gets on her bad side” he laughed. With the way he was talking about her, you could easily see how infatuated he was with her.
“Is she seeing anyone?” I asked, thinking how perfect the two of them would be together.
“Yea-” he grimaced, “she’s been dating this Chuck guy on and off for the past year.”
Before I knew it the bell rang, Emmett and I had spent the whole period talking. After we were dismissed from class, Emmett and I walked to our last class of the day, gym. I inwardly groaned. Of everywhere I lived, each place had only had a two year gym requirement. But of course, here in Forks, Gym was mandatory for all four years of High School. But at least I had a mixed junior/senior gym class, so I had Emmett, Jasper and Rosalie in my class.
I met up with Rosalie and we made our way to the girls change room. We got changed into shorts and tank tops and went out into the gym.
“Hey Bella?” Rosalie asked
“I just wanted to apologize for being a little standoffish, Alice told me a little bit about what was going on and I just wanted to let you know that I'm here if you ever needed to talk.” She said. I was totally stunned. Did THE Rosalie hale just apologize to me, Bella swan?
“Thanks Rose, that's mean a lot. I’ve never really had a lot of girlfriends before.” I said as a few tears escaped. Omg what was with me today? I was an emotional train wreck! These people must think I'm a sap with all the crying I’ve been doing all day.
Rose embraced me in a hug, “don't worry Bells, you have Alice and I, and from now on the three of us our going to be like sisters.” She assured me.
I wiped away the few traitor tears as I passed my slip to Coach Clap, and then Rose and I went and joined up with Emmett and Jasper. However I barely made it to them before I managed to trip on my own feet and go plummeting face first to the floor. Emmett tried without success to muffle his amusement as Rose helped me to my feet.
“Geez Bells, I hate to break it to you, but you’re starting to get a rep as a klutz.” He laughed
“Thanks Em, I hadn’t noticed.” I said sarcastically.
“Oh calm down, I think it’s hilarious.” With that he and jasper broke out into another round of laughter while Rose and I strutted passed them and went over to join the other students who were getting warmed up for class.
Gym ended up being pretty agonizing, we were learning badminton. Today we teamed up and pairs and were just scrimmaging with other teams. Rose and I teamed up and were playing against Emmet and Jasper’s team. Our team actually wasn’t doing too badly; miraculously I was actually good at badminton. That is until on one of my serves the racket flew out of my hand, across the gym, and hit Mike Newton in the forehead.
Emmett and Jasper were rolling on the ground laughing their asses off while I was apologizing profusely to mike. I was starting to think that I was becoming a danger magnet around him, first in English, and now in gym.
“Omg Belsie, that has to be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen!” Emmett boomed.
“Yea Bells, life’s definitely gotten a lot more entertaining ever since you’ve gotten here.” Jasper smirked.
I could feel my face go bright red with embarrassment as the rest of the class started laughing and looked at me in awe.
“Don’t worry Bella, mike had it coming, he’s always been running his mouth off like he’s some kind of big shot, what can I say, karma’s a bitch!” Rose assured me.
The gym teacher brought mike an ice pack and got one of the other guys to help take him to the nurse’s office. the rest of the class was spent with teams just rallying with one another, but I was getting exhausted from my overwhelming day so Rose and I just spent the rest of the class walking laps, talking, and me praying that I could somehow manage to make it through the rest of the day in tack with whatever dignity I had left.
“So Rose, What kinds of things do you and Alice like to do for fun around here?”
“Well Alice is a shopaholic; she lives and breathes for fashion. If I were you I’d look out, she has it for your wardrobe.” She laughed. “I on the other hand am into fashion too, just not as obsessively as she is, I also like working on cars and playing volleyball.”
“Omg, you’re into volleyball?!” I screeched. “I used to play a couple years ago, when we lived in Texas, but I had to give it up when we moved to Phoenix because they never had a girl’s team.” I said. I know I was a natural klutz, but when it came to volleyball I was actually pretty damn good.
“Omg we have a team here in forks, you totally have to try out with me in the spring!” She cheered.
“Okay!” I laughed.
We spent the rest of the class getting to know each other. I told her some of the things I like to do like running and drawing, and she talked about how she was restoring a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL1. We got into talking about relationships;
“So Bella, how many serious boyfriends have you had?”
“I’ve never really been in a serious relationship before, like I’ve dated a couple guys, but since we move around so much, I don't really like to make commitments.” I told her. “What about you?”
“I’ve been seeing this guy, Chuck. He’s a freshman at the University of Washington. He’s really cute and he’s into the classic models like I am. He’s actually helping me rebuild my Chevy.” She said.
When the class was over, Rose and I went and got changed and headed out to the parking lot.
“So Bella, excited for the shopping trip this weekend?” she asked.
“Actually I am” I laughed. “It’ll be nice to get out of Forks for a couple hours; as long as you don't feed me too the sharks or I guess Alice in this case.”
Just then a little pixie jumped on my back sending us both flying to the ground.
“Geez-Alice give a girl some warning.” I laughed as Emmett and jasper walked over and joined us.
“Sorry Bells, I just missed you” she screeched as she gave me a hug.
“I missed you too, Ali.” I said as I looked over to Jasper. “Can a girl get some help?” I asked.
He just laughed and scooped up his girl into an embrace as I picked myself off the ground.
Finally the day came to an end. I said goodbye to the guys, grabbed my bag and made my way over to the reception building. When I got there I passed my signed slip to Mrs. Cote.
“How was your first day dear?” she asked.
“Actually, it wasn’t too bad, my classes aren’t terribly horrible and I’ve even managed to meet some new friends,” I said. “But I had a family issue and I missed half of my biology class.”
“Oh my goodness, I hope everything’s okay. I’ll talk to Mr. Banner for you, but it shouldn’t be a problem.” She said.
“Thank you Mrs. Cote, have a nice night.” I said as I left the office and made my way out into the parking lot. I got into my baby, my 2009 Ford F-150, and left for home.
As I drove home I couldn't help but reflect back on my day. I can honestly say that my first day at Forks High was a success; I couldn't remember the last time that I laughed so much. I somehow managed to make some pretty great friends and for some reason, when I'm with them I manage to forget about everything that’s going on. I never would have thought that friendship would be the key to numbing all the pain.
