5. A Cruel Past

The rest of the week seemed to pass by in a blur, and before I knew it, it was already Friday. Apparently, the evasive Edward Cullen returned home Wednesday night. Emmet and Alice said that the reason he hasn’t been to school yet was because he was still recovering from his meet or something. I must admit, I was a little excited to see the boy who made up the final position in our little group.

When I walked into English early Friday morning, I noticed there was a new guy that I’ve never seen before, staring at me, sitting by the desk next to mine in the back. Shrugging it off without a second thought, I made my way over to my desk and gave him an apprehensive smile as I sat down. Our classmates seemed to pour in after that, and class started with a less then riveting discussion on female presence in Shakespearian plays.

As I was taking notes, I kept feeling like someone was watching me. I tentively looked over to Mike Newton to see if it was him, but he was busy flirting with Lauren. Ever since his encounter with Emmett in the cafeteria, the other day, he’s learned that it would be better to move on or admire from a far, which was totally fine by me. As long as he didn't get all possessive and crazy, I could care less. But today he was busy making eyes at the blond, Lauren, sitting next to him. Which left me in the clear. So who was staring at me? I looked around the classroom before finally catching the eye of the attractive bronze haired god, sitting to my left. When our eyes met, I quickly looked away, and let my hair become a curtain, separating us.

After a few minutes, when the class was nearing an end, the bronze haired boy surprised me by leaning over and whispering into my ear;

“I'm Edward, what’s your name?”

Edward... Edward why does that sound so familiar? Oh Snap! Edward Cullen!

“I'm Bella; it’s nice to finally meet you.” I said giving him a shy smile.

“Finally?” he asked.

“Yes, I’ve become quite close with your brother and sister, and their friends Jasper and Rose.” I replied bashfully.

He just nodded his head and leaned further back into his chair. “Ah, so you’re the famous Bella Swan. It seems that you’ve really captivated the attention of my siblings.” He said with a smirk.

“Ah, I see my reputation precedes me.” I grinned sheepishly.

“That it does,” he said turning his attention back to the lesson. He kind of had a brusque attitude, but he seemed nice enough.

As the class came to an end, and the bell rang I gathered my stuff and was getting myself ready to head to History to meet up with Jazz, when I felt a light tap on my shoulder.

“I guess I’ll see you at lunch?” he asked.

All I could do was turn to him and nod; “Yea, I guess” I smiled.

And just like that Edward Cullen had entered my life.

After an uneventful Spanish class with Rosalie, I made my way to History to spend the hour with Jasper. Our History classes usually consisted of Jasper and I talking and joking around with playful banter, and today was no different. Currently we were absent-mindedly listening to our teacher rant about WWI. Jasper was doodling on the cover of his notebook, and my attention was elsewhere, daydreaming about the boy I met in English.

“Hey Jazz; guess who I met in my first class?” I whispered as to not draw attention to us at the back of the class.

“I don't know, who?” he whispered back as he continued to draw patterns on his notebook.

“Edward Cullen.” I said, making sure to over emphasize each syllable.

“Really? What’d he say?” he asked, dropping his pen and looking up at me, finally gaining interest in the topic.

“He said ‘hi I'm Edward, who are you’” I told him.

“And what did you say?” he asked raising an eyebrow.

“I said: ‘I'm Bella; it’s nice to finally meet you’” I replied.

“And then what happened?”

“God Jasper! You’re really freaking me out! I think you’ve been hanging out with your pixie-girlfriend a little too much, because you sound just like her.”

“Sorry, I guess all that estrogen from hanging out with the three of you girls is really starting to rub off on me.” He smirked.

“Ha-ha. You know you love us. And if you’re so bothered by the estrogen levels, you can always hang out with Emmett more.”

“Yea I would, but I'm kind of fond of hanging out with my girlfriend, and unfortunately for my diminishing manliness, she’s stuck to you by the hip.” I must admit his sarcasm was funny.

“It's not my fault that my company is more enjoyable than nuzzling with her boyfriend.” I smirked.

“Nuzzling?” he laughed. “Is that even a word?”

“Whatever.” I replied, rolling my eyes.

The rest of the class was spent with playful banter. I really liked Jasper. Over the past week, we’ve definitely become very close. Not in a romantic way, but more of like he’s become a brother. Jasper had a soothing presence which made him very easy to talk to. Since the short time I’ve known him, he’s become like my personal psychologist. He’s always easy to talk to, and he knows exactly what to say to make me laugh and comfort me when I’m having a down day. He always makes sure to ask about how my dad and brothers were doing, but I’ve never had anything new to tell him, seeing as how I haven't heard anything new since Ryan called in the beginning of the week.

“Hey Jazz, can I ask you something?” I asked, looking up from my work.

“Shoot,” he said looking at me.

“What’s Edward like? He seems a little... distant.” I said, blushing a little bit.

He just gave me an all knowing look; “Edward has always been a little reclusive. It’s not that he’s too shy to get out there, it’s more like he’s likes his solitary and once he’s chosen his friends, he doesn’t really like to reach out of his circle of friends, I'm actually quite surprised he talked to you, I thought it would take a while for him to come around and talk to you.” He replied with a little chuckle. The rest of the class was spent just listening to our teacher’s attempt at understanding WWI.

After History, Trig passed by in a blur, and finally it was time for lunch. Alice and I made our way to the line in the cafeteria. Today I decided on a turkey BLT wrap and a bottle of water, where as Alice opted for a large fries and Pepsi. I was honestly jealous of Alice, she could eat anything and not gain a pound, but I did that, I would bloat up like a whale. We paid for our food and made our way over to our regular table. Jasper and Rosalie, where already there.

Sometimes it was hard to believe these two were related. Sure they were both alike in the way that they were drop dead gorgeous, but they also had completely different personalities. Jasper was more laid back and easy going, where as Rosalie was more ‘on the go’ and ‘in your face’. However they were both fiercely loyal and looked out for one another. Jasper may be calm and collected, but mess with his baby sister and you would feel his wrath. That and Emmett would probably flatten you like a pancake. His infatuation with Rosalie was becoming more prominent, I think the only person who didn't know was probably Rosalie.

“Hey Besties,” I said as I greeted my best friends, while sitting in the seat next to Rosalie, as Alice skipped over and sat next to jasper who was sitting across from us.

“Hey Beautiful.” Rose replied as she leaned over and swiped a fry from Alice, who was too busy making out with Jasper to notice.

“Guess what!” Alice said, after finally pulling away from Jasper, long enough to breath.

“What?” Rosalie and I asked in unison.

“Tomorrow is finally Saturday, which means our long awaited shopping trip is finally here.” Alice screeched, practically jumping up and down in her seat.

“Oh, joy!” I replied, the sarcasm seeping through my tone.

“Oh Buck up, it’s going to be a blast.” She said as she swatted Rosalie from stealing another fry.

“Hey Girlies!” Emmett boomed as he grabbed a chair and squeezed in between Rose and I. Edward followed after him, sitting next to Jasper.

“Dude, what am I chopped liver over here?” Jasper asked insulted that his masculinity had been decreased yet again. He leaned over and grabbed one of Alice’s fries and flung it at Emmett, hitting him right smack in the forehead. Emmett simply stole a handful of fries from Alice and threw them at Jasper who swatted them away with his hand, sending them flying into a nearby table.

“Okay, the next person to touch my fries is gonna get a stiletto up the ass.” Alice yelled.

The whole table broke out into laughter, as Alice just huffed, and started nibbling on one of her fries.

“So Belsie, have you had the pleasure of meeting lil’Eddie over here.” Emmett asked as he wrapped one of his massive muscular arms around my shoulder and made a head gesture towards Edward.

“Yes Em, I have.” I laughed as I rested my back against Emmett’s chest.

“And did he tell you he placed 1st out of 50 runners in Utah?” Em asked looking between Edward and me.

“why no Em, no he didn't.” I laughed, sending a questioning look towards Edward. He just shrugged, and started picking at his sandwich. I guess it was gonna take a little work for Edward to warm up to me.

After a long drown-out silence, Em decided to break the awkward tension. “so what’s everyone doing tonight?”

“Emmett you goof! Did you forget that you, Edward and I our supposed to go with mom and dad to Seattle for one of dad’s medical conferences?” Alice asked.

“Oh, crap.” Emmett bellowed, as he leaned back into his chair.

“So what about Jasper and you?” I asked Rose; “any major plans tonight?”

“I was supposed to go up to the University and visit Chuck, but he texted me during Sociology and told me he was busy with his Calculus study group tonight, so I guess my night’s all clear. What about you Jazz?” Rosalie asked, turning towards Jasper.

“Nothing, I guess, since these three losers our ditching us tonight!” he laughed as he playfully pushed Edward.

“Do you two want to chill at my place and watch movies?” I asked as I took a sip of my water.

“Sure sounds like a plan” Rosalie and Jasper quickly agreed.

After school, Rosalie decided to travel home with me, and Jasper would come over later after he got cleaned up from football practice. Rosalie and I decided to watch Pride and Prejudice staring Keira Knightly while we finished up our weekend homework.

It was actually really easy to get caught up with the Forks curriculum. I’ve pretty much already gone over everything before at my previous schools, and Rose, Alice and the guys were very gracious when it came to helping me go over things that I missed.

After the movie was over and we had finished all our homework, Rose and I thought it would be fun to do something.

“So what would you like to do tonight?” I asked Rose, after finally finishing my biology homework.

“Hmm... I don't know, how about we bake cookies or something, I have a big craving for something sweet.” She laughed.

“Oh, why don't we bake cupcakes, I have an old family recipe we can use,” I said as I skipped to the kitchen and started looking through drawers for my grandmother old recipe book. “Ah, here it is. What would you prefer, we can make just a normal vanilla cupcake, or we can have a little fun with it and try one of the specialty recipes.” I asked, showing Rosalie all the different recipes.

“Ooh, let’s try one of the specialty ones, here what about this one for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes.” She asked pointing at one of the newer recipes.

We cleaned the table off, from all our books, and started taking out mixing bowls, measuring cups, muffin pans, and various different ingredients. Rosalie was measuring out the flour and sugar and dumping them into one of the bigger bowls, while I lined the cooking pans with multi-coloured paper liners.

“I think I'm going to get Jazz to pick up some pre-made icing, so we won’t have to bother making it. I’m going to see if he wants to pick up a pizza and maybe a couple movies too, that sound okay?” she asked as she poured the milk into the batter and added the rest of the ingredients.

“Sounds like a plan, why don't you get him to grab your stuff, and you guys can stay here tonight, and we can stay up watching movies and eating cupcakes all night.” I asked as I started loading the dishwasher with some of the dishes we were done with.

“Okay! Omg I haven't slept over at someone’s house in forever!” she laughed. “Well anyone other than Alice’s that is.”

“Yea and I definitely wouldn’t mind having the company around here, sometimes it gets a little lonely around here at night, especially when you’re used to dealing with 5 noisy brothers.”

“I can imagine. I'm just going to give Jasper a quick call, he should be done with practice by now,” she said as she grabbed her phone and went in the other room to talk to Jasper.

While she was doing that I preheated the oven to 350 degrees, and poured the batter into the liners. I could hear Rose talking to Jazz on her phone as I was putting the cupcakes into the oven. I grabbed a bag of chips and headed into the living room and sat in the couch, waiting for Rose to get off the phone.

“Jazz is going to pick up the pizza and movies after he heads home and grabs his stuff, then head to my house and grab me come clothes. I'm thinking maybe we can stop by my house tomorrow before we go pick up Alice for the shopping trip?” she asked as she hung up her phone and grabbed a handful of chips.

“Yea, that’s no problem. Did you say Jazz was going to stop by his house before going to yours?” I asked, hoping I wasn’t asking anything inappropriate, but I was a little puzzled to why they wouldn’t be living in the same house, since their siblings and all.

“Yea, it’s a long story,” she said quietly. “About four years ago, before we moved here from Alaska, mom and dad decided to get a separation, dad ended up getting transferred down here to take up a management position of one of Alaska’s field offices, so my parents decided to get back together in hopes of reconciling and having a fresh start since we were moving to a brand new place.

“Things were great when we first got here, Jasper and I made quick friends with the Cullen’s and we all became inseparable, mom and dad were getting along again, and we were all enjoying the new financial perks that dad’s job brought. Although a few months later, mom started retreating into a dark shell, entirely closing herself off from all of us. After a while, we finally convinced her to talk to Carlisle, the Cullen’s dad, and he diagnosed her with depression, and started her on anti-depressants.

“Meanwhile, dad started retreating into his work and Jasper and I hardly saw him anymore. Dad and I had always had a close relationship; he was the one who actually taught me how to play volley-ball when I was five. I guess I’ve always been a daddy’s girl, so when he started becoming reclusive and hiding in his work, I blamed it all on mom for pushing him away. Even Jazz’s and my relationship started to take a toll. He’s always felt sympathetic of what mom has been going through, he’s always had a way of relating to other people’s feelings.

“About a year after we moved here, dad was caught having an affair with one of his legal assistants. The whole family was devastated. The man who I thought of as a hero, cheated on my mother when she was helpless, and pretty much ended any chance we had of truly becoming a family again.” Rosalie had to take a moment and compose herself. She was crying, so I reached over and gave her in a hug.

“Omg, Rose I'm so sorry, I had no clue. I never should have asked.” I said as I let her go and reached over and grabbed the box of tissue off the end table, and handed it to her.

“No it’s okay; you’re actually the only person that I’ve ever shared this with, other then the Cullen’s. It feels nice to actually have someone to talk about it with.” She smiled weakly, as she wiped away the tears from her face.

“So how did you and Jasper end up being separated into two different households?” I asked trying to fathom what could have happened.

“Well dad ended up divorcing mom, and moving to the other side of Forks with his 24 year old mistress. Mom ended up drinking herself into oblivion, and a couple weeks later she swallowed a half a bottle of her antidepressants and washing them down with a quart of vodka. Jasper ended up finding her, and luckily he got her to the hospital before it was too late.

“Things only seemed to get worst after we got her home. She began to resent us because every time she looked at us, she was reminded of him. It got to a point where she couldn't even look at Jasper anymore because he and my dad looked so much alike.

“After a month of this, I couldn't take it anymore. I just couldn't sit around and watch her deteriorate like that. I decided to move in with my dad and his airhead girlfriend, to see if I could salvage any bit of the relationship we once had before. Jasper ended up staying with mom. He just couldn't find it in himself to leave her.” Rosalie started crying again with the pain of the old memories.

I didn't know what to say to comfort her, so I just hugged her and gently rocked her as I let her cry and let all the pain out. They were so young to be dealing with stuff like this; I definitely had a whole new kind of respect for the both of them, especially Jasper. He was so selfless and caring. I just couldn't believe the amount of patience and maturity it would take in order to stay and take care of someone who loathed you so much.

Rosalie’s story just made me realize that I’ve been living in a sheltered bubble for the past few years. I just couldn't believe how selfish I’ve been. All I’ve been focusing on lately were mine and my family’s problems that I hadn’t even noticed the pain of others who were right in front of my face.

As I sat there comforting Rosalie, I made a promise to myself. I may not be able to control anything that's happening right now in my family, but from this moment on, I would do everything in my power to help those that I could to deal with their own pain and problems.
