Chapter Eight – New Houseguest

Edward and I sped to the hospital as fast as I could get my truck could go. The whole drive there, my mind was trying to process what was happening. When Rosalie had called Edward she never bothered to clue him in on anything that was going on, she just said to get to the hospital as fast as we could. Did something happen between her and her boyfriend Chuck? Did they get in a fight? I know she was supposedly supposed to be hanging out with Alice but what if she bailed at the last minute and went up and visited Chuck at school? I swear to God, if that boy laid one finger on her I’d hunt the bastard down and castrate him with my bare hands! Lord knows Emmett and Jasper would hold him down, while I did it!

As the tears of frustration started to stream down my face, I took a chance and glanced over at Edward, who was sitting in the passenger seat looking out the window. He had his head slightly turned, and when he saw me looking at him he leaned over and took hold of one of my hands and gave at a gentle squeeze.

“Bells, it’s all going to be okay. We don't know what’s happening yet love, so let’s just stay calm until we get there and find out what’s going on.” He said as he gently leaned over and kissed away a tear on my cheek. “No matter what, were in this together.” He said with such raw emotion that I couldn't help but wonder how in the past month I somehow managed to go from an ‘I’ to a ‘we’. I didn't really trust my voice enough to respond back to him, so I just nodded and gave him an appreciative smile.

When we got to the Forks General Hospital, I quickly parked my truck, and we ran to the hospital’s main entrance. When we went inside I noticed Emmett hassling one of the receptionists at the front desk. “My father is Dr. Carlisle Cullen! You need to page him now, we need to know what’s going on!” he seethed to the frightened looking receptionist.

“I'm sorry Mr. Cullen, but your father’s in surgery. I assure you, he’ll be out as soon as he can. Please take a seat in the waiting room with the others.” The dark curly haired receptionist said as she tried to escort Emmett to the vicinity of the empty waiting room, where he reluctantly sat on one of the blue, faded chairs.

“Emmett’s what going on? Where’s Rose?” I asked as I ran up to him and threw myself at him in a hug.

“I have no clue what’s going on. It’s like pulling teeth to get answers around here, and neither Alice nor I can get two words out of Rose to find out what’s going on.” He said as he let go of me and threw his head into his hands in frustration.

“Bella?” I turned around to see Alice running at me. “You need to come with me to talk to Rose, I can’t get her to calm down, and she keeps asking for you.” I let go of Edward’s hand and followed Alice as she lead me down one of the empty white corridors. She brought me to another waiting room, where I found Rosalie huddled up on a chair, sobbing.

“Rose, hun, are you okay? Did something happen?” I asked as I ran to her and gently embraced her and let her cry into my shoulder. Alice quietly came over and sat at Rose’s feet, gently patting her back. All I could hear from her was her mumbling something about her mom and Jasper. Sensing that she probably didn't want to have this conversation in front of her best friend, and Jasper’s girlfriend, I turned to Alice and discretely whispered to her that maybe it would be best if she went and checked up on her brothers to see if they found out anything new.

After she quietly left, I helped sit Rose so that she was facing me. “Rose, I need you to talk to me, I can’t help if I don't know what’s going on.” I said as I continued to soothingly rub his back.

“Mom... Jasper found mom-” she said as she gasped and tried regain composure. “Bella, I don't know what’s going to happen. She’s finally lost it, she’s gone insane! I just don't understand-“she paused again, trying to recompose herself. “She was drunk and she got violent with Jasper. Jasper could have defended himself, but he refused to raise a hand to that woman. He just stood there and let her go at him. I think he must of thought that maybe if she got it out her system, that she would calm down and pass out like she usually did. But one thing lead to another and somehow he ended up falling down the stairs. He had his phone on him and ended up calling me to come get him and take him to the hospital.”

“Rose, honey, let me get this straight. Your mom got drunk and pushed Jasper down the stairs?” I asked in disgust, but she just nodded. I couldn't believe that their mother could do something like that to her own son. The whole situation was just repulsive.

“When I got there, she had passed out so I call the police, and they came and got an ambulance to take mom and Jasper to the hospital. Carlisle’s with mom right now, and Dr. McCumber is assessing Jasper’s injuries.” As she was telling me this, Carlisle made his way over to us, still in his scrubs.

“Rosalie? I have an update on your mother. As you know your mother was on Lexapro for her depression. The combination of alcohol and her high dosage of anti-depressants was most likely what caused the episode of violence this evening. Although what has be particularly worried is the amount of medication we found in her system. When they brought her in we had to pump her stomach, for fear that she could OD, after a numerous amount of tests, we discovered that she had ten times the amount of medication in her system then she ought to have had. It’s my prognosis that she’s most likely been mixing her meds for a while now. She was very lucky that she got here when she did, I don't want to think what could’ve happened if she hadn’t.” He said sadly as he pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“Rosalie, I would like to talk to you as someone who has been close with you and your family for many years now,” he said as he slowly came over and knelt down in front of Rosalie and I, so that he was at eye level with both of us. “I think you and your brother are going to have to consider placing your mother in a rehabilitation clinic, because I don't believe she’ll go willingly, but honey if you two don't do something soon, I don't know if we’ll be so lucky to save her the next time she tries something like this.”

“I understand Carlisle, I assumed this was coming, but what can we do if she doesn’t want to go? It’s not like we can force her, she’s twice our age after all, it’s not like we can tie her down and leave her there after all, although at this point, I wouldn’t be opposed to it” she said.

“Actually, that’s what I’ve come to talk to you about. I think you should consider talking to Jasper about pressing charges against her. If he filed charges with the police for assault, then she could most likely avoid jail time by taking a deal with the D.A and going to rehab instead. It would most likely be the most beneficial option at this point.” Rosalie started to cry again, as she listen to Carlisle and his suggestion.

“I want to Carlisle, god knows I do, I really can’t sit back and watch her self-destruct like this anymore, especially now that she’s bringing Jasper down with her. I just think it’s going to be hard to convince Jasper, he’s always been convinced that she’ll get better with time, he’s always had a difficulty when it comes to seeing her flaws.” Jasper really was a great son, to always look after his mother like that, but I was with Rose, it was time for them to intervene.

Just then a nurse walked into the waiting room and motioned Carlisle towards her. They talked for a few minutes, before she left again and he returned to where we were waiting. “Rosalie, Dr. McCumber just finished with your brother, he has a broken arm and a mild concussion but otherwise I think he’s more or less just shaken. You can go in and see him now, if you’d like.”

“Okay, Carlisle thanks.” She said as she got up out of her seat and started towards Jasper’s room. I didn't really feel comfortable interrupting her time with her brother so I suggested maybe it would be best if I went and checked on Alice and the guys. She agreed and asked me to take her cell phone since she couldn't have it near the hospital machinery.

It was a little after two in the morning, so the hospital was pretty much dead. Since Forks is such a small town community, there really wasn’t that many people here to begin with. I made my way downstairs, to the cafeteria where I found the Cullen clan sitting around a table in the middle of the abandoned cafeteria, drinking coffee. I made my way to the vending machines and got an espresso, before heading over to join them.

I walked over and took a seat between Alice and Edward. I saw him smile, so I leaned my back against his chest, so that my head rested on his shoulder, and then I put my feet up on the chair across from us, next to Emmett.

“Comfy?” Edward asked making me laugh.

“Very, thanks.” I joked.

For the next hour, the four of us just sat like that in silence. I kept sneaking glances between Alice and her brothers. Alice looked extremely lost and confused, I can only imagine how scared she must be, knowing that her boyfriend was somewhere beaten and bruised, and she had absolutely no clue what was going on. The guys pretty much looked dead; they looked like they were pretty much ready to strangle one of the nurse’s just to get information on what was going on. None of the Cullen’s, other than Carlisle, had a clue about the situation that was going on between Jasper and his mother, I was just hoping that this whole ordeal would show Rose and Jazz that they can open up and trust the Cullen’s without having to fear about being judged.

We continued to sit like that, when Rose’s cell phone started vibrating signalling a call. I took it out of my pocket and checked the caller ID, to find out that it was ‘Chuck’. I wasn’t really sure whether I should answer it or not seeing as how he was calling to talk to Rose.

“Hey Alice,” I said, waking her up from her sombre state, “the caller ID says Chuck, should I answer it?”

“Yea, you probably should Bells, he’s probably a little ticked that Rose hasn’t called him yet.” She said with a grimace, the guys just nodded their heads in agreement.

“Hello,” I answered

“Rose? Why haven’t you called me back? Do you have any clue what time it is?” he said in an abrasive tone.

“Um, no actually this is Bella, Rosalie’s friend. She’s not here right now.”

“Where is she, and why in hell’s name do you have her phone?” he roared. Jeez someone had temper issues.

“She’s in with her brother, and she can’t have her phone near the hospital equipment, so she gave it to me to hold,” I told him, not that he really deserved to know with that attitude. “Would you like me to get her to call you, when things settle down?”

“Fine, whatever. Just tell her I called and if she wants to talk, than she can call me next time, got that?” God, was he always this abrupt?

“Yea,” I said rolling my eyes, “I’ll be sure to do that.” And then before I could say anything else, the little bugger hung up on me!

“God!” I said shutting the phone, “Is he always such a...”

“Prick? Yea, pretty much.” Emmett said, finishing my sentence.

“Then what does she see in him?” I asked, trying to figure out how someone like Rosalie would go for a nasty guy like Chuck.

“Girl got it bad for the bad boys,” Alice snickered. “That, and there both car junkies,” she replied. “You haven’t met him yet, but me and the guys really only put up with him for Rosalie’s sake. Luckily for us, we haven’t been subjected to him lately, thanks to Rosalie visiting him on campus and all.

Again our conversation was interrupted by someone clearing there throat. We all turned around to find Carlisle. “Bella dear, Rosalie would like to talk to you, she asked me to get you to go find her.”

“Okay Carlisle, thank you.” I said getting up, and avoiding the questioning looks. I’d have to see if I could persuade Rosalie to come and talk to them and help them understand.

I found Rosalie sitting outside Jasper’s room. “How’s he doing?” I asked as I took a seat next to her. “Not bad, a little shaken up, but he’s holding strong. We talked about what we were going to do about mom, it took a while and a lot of persuasion but he finally agreed that it would be in all our best interest if she was to get the help she needs.”

“I'm glad, Rose. Have you discussed the possibility of him moving back in with you and your dad?”

“No that’s the thing he’s being real hard-headed about. He refuses to live with beach blond step-mom, since she insists on taking the place of mom in his life, and dad absolutely refuses to allow him to live out on his own, so were trying to deal with that. But other than that, things are surprisingly looking up; I actually have hope that we might be able to salvage being a family after all.”

“I'm really happy for you hun,” I said giving her a hug. “I think I'm going to go in and talk to Jazz, I have an idea I want to run past him, why don't you take a few minutes and go see Alice and the guys, they’re really worried about you. I think you should really tell them what’s going on Rose; I know they won’t judge you, they just want to be here for you both.”

“I think your right Bells, it’s about time I guess.” She said as she slowly got up out of her seat and turned towards the direction of the cafeteria. “Oh, and Bella? Thank you for everything you’ve done for us in the past month, I don't know how Jazz or I would have survived if It wasn’t for you.” She said as a tear slid down her cheek.

“It’s no problem Rose, that’s what best friends are for.” I said before making my way towards Jasper.

“Hey, Handsome” I said as I entered his hospital room. He was lying down in the hospital bad; with his casted arm resting on a pillow. For just falling down the stairs, he actually didn't look half bad, he only had a few cuts and bruises here and there, but other than that he looked good.

“How are you feeling?” I asked as I took a seat on the edge of the bed.

“Been better, I guess” he said with a smirk.

“Rose told me about your housing issues, what are you going to do?”

“Not sure Bells. Carlisle said I could stay with them for a while, but I don't know how comfortable I’d be staying at my girlfriend’s parents place. Honestly, I just need a place to stay for a couple months until I graduate and then I can get my trust fund and can get a place of my own.”

“Actually, Jazz that’s something I wanted to talk about with you. Why don’t you come and stay with me? My brothers won’t be home for another couple months so I have the house to myself and it actually would be a lot safer to have someone living with me, in case anything were to happen. And it’s not like we don't have a bunch of spare rooms... what do you say?”

“I don't know, Bells... what would your father think?” he asked with a look of scepticism.

“I’d talk to him the next time he calls, but I’m more than positive he’d be okay with it. In my family, we’ve always followed the motto ‘never leave a man behind’. We look out for each other; that’s what a family does. In the past month, you and Rose have become a part of my family; you’re like a brother to me for god’s sake! I can’t bare to see someone I love deal with all this. I really want to do this for you guys, and I know my family wouldn’t mind.” I said trying to persuade him to say yes. I really do believe that if my dad and brothers were here, they would definitely welcome him in with open arms. It’s just the way are family is; we always look out for the ones we love.

“Bella, are you really sure about this? I really don't want you to feel like you have to.”

“Don’t be stupid Jazz, of course I'm sure.”

“Okay, but I refuse to be a free-loader, so we’re going to have to come up with some stuff I can do to help out around the house” he said with a smirk.

“Does that mean, what I think it means?!” I said with a smile.

“I guess it does.” He laughed, leaning over to give me a hug. “Thanks a lot darling, I really appreciate it.”

“No problem, just do me one favour” I asked looking at him. “You should really talk to Alice, she’s really freaking out. She worries about you more then you know. She really loves you and she wants to be there for you right now, but she doesn’t understand what’s going on. Just promise me you’ll talk to her, okay?”

“Yea, I guess I really haven’t been that good of a boyfriend lately. Do you think she’ll forgive me?” he asked worriedly.

“Not even a question, she loves you Jazz, you just need to work on not shutting her out when things get crazy.”

“Thanks Bella, can you do me a favour and see if she’ll come talk to me?”

“Of course, oh, and if you really wanted to thank me, then you’d see if you could get my spare key back from your girl friend” I said as I gave him a pout and the saddest puppy dog eyes I could muster. I knew he was my only chance of ensuring no more early morning attacks from his evil little pixie.

“Yea, no promises,” he said with a laugh.

I was really happy that Jasper and Rose were finally being honest with the Cullen’s. I knew Jasper had me and Rose, but in times like this, the more of a support system he had, the better. All I know is that things in Forks just keep getting more and more interesting.
