Chapter 4

The thought about Charlie pushed the idea of Jasper and Alice out of my head as quick as it had come. What did my father think? Was he looking for me right now? I shook my hair out of the towel and brushed it, my hand shaking the whole time. I exited the black tiled bathroom to see Edward’s back to me, looking through his CD cases. He heard the door close and turned around to face me.

When he saw the look on my face, he paled even more, if he could. Edward crossed the room in two strides to sweep me up in his arms. “What’s wrong,” He asked, stroking my hair.

“Charlie,” I simply stated, knowing that he would know what I was talking about.

Edward’s body relaxed as I spoke, not knowing why the sudden relaxation, I looked up at his bright golden eyes. “What?” I asked him, furrowing my eyebrows.

“I was wondering when we had to talk about this. Let’s go talk to Carlisle,” He slipped his arm around my waist and pulled me through the doorway and down the hallway to his father’s office.

Edward knocked three times on the maple door. “Come in, Edward.” Carlisle said and we entered the beautiful office. Carlisle looked up from his work, eying us from his spot. “What can I do for you two?”

“It’s about Bella’s former life here in Forks,” Edward started. The word ‘former’ struck a chill down my body for some reason that I could not pinpoint. “We need to tell her about how we’re going to…go about making sure people will not look for her. We know that she will be missed and people will look for her if we do not tell them what happened.”

Carlisle nodded his head and turned his ocher eyes upon my own. “Alright, Bella, for the time being, we have told your father that we have taken you on a ‘surprise birthday’ camping trip that will be ending by the end of this week. We have two days to get in contact with Charlie and tell him that you are dead.” I gawked at him when he said ‘dead’.

“What…” I started but couldn’t finish the sentence. Charlie and Renee would think I was dead… How was this going to work? I felt Edward’s hand rubbing soothing circles on my lower back. “What,” I gulped, “Are you going to “Tell Charlie?”

Carlisle smiled sadly. “I have decided that the best story to tell you, due to your previous clumsiness, is that you tripped over a rock and stumbled off a cliff and into a ravine up in Goat Rock Mountains and died by hitting from extreme head trauma.” He stated in a soft voice.

I closed my eyes, trying to take all of this in, trying to figure out if my father would believe the story that Carlisle had constructed. He would, I finally decided. My father believed everything Dr. Cullen told him. I finally looked up at the blonde headed doctor. “What about my body? He will definitely want to see it,” I said.

“We will say that the body was too mangled to put it in a coffin or even to be viewed,” He answered my question with ease. I nodded, trying to think of another question that would prevent the “death” of me.

“What will we do afterwards?” I asked him, looking up through my eyelashes.

“We will stay until the funeral in which Edward, Emmett, Rosalie, and I will attend. Esme will stay home with you, I will tell people at the funeral that she was the one to see you die and was too distraught to come to the funeral. We will then leave Forks a week after the funeral; claiming that Edward couldn’t stand to think that I was his fault that you died and didn’t want any other reminder of you, so we agreed to leave. We will head to a town in Montana where you will be Emmett’s younger sister and Esme’s other niece and nephew. We will live in a small town called Arlee.” He responded.

I nodded and thanked him. Turning around, I walked out of the room and down the stairs towards the living room. Edward was not behind me. Believing he had stayed behind to speak to Carlisle, I plopped down beside Emmett on the white couch.

I looked at the screen of the plasma television and saw that he was watching wrestling. I just sat and watched people hit each other upside the head with a metal chair. Every time some fell to the ground or got pinned, Emmett laughed.

“I could so beat them.” He stated, glaring at the TV. “But if I was allowed to wrestle the way I wrestle with Jasper, then they’d all be dead.”

Jasper and Alice popped into my head and my wonderings as to where the couple was. I wanted to apologize for my brief second of stupidity in which it had cost me their family. I looked over at Emmett and smiled at him. “Hey, Emmett,” I asked as innocent as I could muster.

“What’s up, little sis,” He asked, gazing down at me.

“Do you know where Jasper and Alice are?” I asked him.

“Yeah, I do. They’re at Ta…” And that’s all he could get out because Edward had come out of nowhere and tackled him to the ground.

“What the hell, man?” Emmett yelled at Edward. “That was an unfair tackle! I didn’t even know we were wrestling!”

“All is fair, remember?” Edward growled. “I win.” He got up off his brother and turned around to face me; and his eyes were balls of fury. “I’m going to go talk to Bella now.” He grabbed my wrist and pulled me off the couch and towards the stairs.

I stopped in my tracks, attempting to stop my feet from moving. Edward glared back at me, daring me to argue with him. Glaring back at him, I pulled my wrist out of his and fell to the ground. At this point, Emmett was laughing his head off.

“Bella, I would like to speak to you.” Edward said, trying to control his voice from lashing out.

“I would like to stay here and watch wrestling with Emmett.” I stated and walked over to plop down next to Emmett on the couch. Edward sighed and stalked back over to the couch and picked me up and carried me up the stairs.

“What the hell, Edward!” I yelled. He said nothing I response and kept carrying me up the stairs to his room. He opened the door, walked in the room, and plunked me down on the black leather couch.

He pinched the bridge of his nose as he stalked the length of his room back and forth. My eyes followed his every movement, watching him take one step in front of another slowly. He suddenly stopped and looked up at me, his eyes angry, but more calm than they were downstairs with Emmett.

“What am I going to do with you, Bella?” He asked.

“I was asking Emmett a simple question…” I started but never finished the question.

“Why do you want to know where Jasper and Alice are?” He yelled suddenly.

“Because, Edward! I want to apologize to Jasper for doing what I did!” I yelled back at him. Edward looked appalled.

“Apologize for what?”

“Apologize for the stupid mistake I mad by giving myself a paper cut and making him lose his home in the process! He attacked me because of that stupid paper cut and my best friend went with him due to that, Edward!” I yelled. Again, Edward’s face looked shocked.

“Bella, you need to know you did nothing. You did nothing in which it is your fault. Jasper is at fault here; he is the one who caused this to happen!” He said softly at first but ended up yelling at the end.

I stared down at my hands which were lying in my lap. “If I had not given myself that paper cut…”

“Stop, Bella. You did nothing to deserve this. He bit you because he could not control himself.” He said fiercely.

“Edward, I need to talk to Jasper and Alice. I need to tell them…” I started to say, but truth be told I only knew one thing that I would tell the two and that was to apologize.

“What? What, Bella? What would you tell them to smooth things over?” He asked me. “You could say nothing to them because it will never be the same again.”

“Edward, I just need to see them.” I whispered and he growled.

“You will never see Jasper again. He will never get within a hundred mile radius of you ever again. If Alice comes back, then that is her choice, but Jasper will never lay eyes on you again.” He whispered fiercely.

I was startled when I saw the look in his eyes. Until now they had been a dark ocher, but now they were pitch black.

“But…” I started.

“No.” He answered. “You will never see him again.” I looked down at my lap and curled my legs in under my chin and hugged them to my chest. I closed my eyes and felt something ice cold touch my cheek and stick there.

It felt like ice.
