Chapter Twelve - Finally!

Charlie left early on Wednesday. Emma let me sleep in as late as I wanted, which was until ten-thirty. After a luxurious breakfast of blueberry waffles made by the Eggo company, we sat down to watch movies.

Emma pulled out White Chicks. We laughed until we cried. Next, we watched Ever After, one of the best romantic movies ever. Emma mouthed every word. It was distracting at first, but soon, her words faded in the ambiance of the old world. During Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Emma snarled.

“What’s wrong?” I schreeched.

Emma poucned on me and pulled a blanket over our heads. That was all that she could do in the time that she had. As soon as the pink fuzzy blanket blocked my vision, I heard the door open.

“I can still smell her.” It was Alice! I started to squirm when another voice made me freeze.

“Me, too. There was another vampire here. It’s scent is just as strong,” Edward told Alice. “Bella?” he called.

“Edward!” I yelled.

Emma released me in surprise. I tossed the blanket away and flew to Edward. His stone arms encased me. I kissed him with all of my might. He kissed me back just as passionately. In the corners of my conscious, I heard several ferral growls and a thud. It did not matter. I had Edward back.

“I missed you,” he said as he rested his forehead on mine.

“Not as much as I missed you. What happened? What took you so long?” I asked.

“Later. It is not important. We need to get you out of here.” Edward grabbed my hand and pulled me foreward.

“Why?” I screamed and jerked away. He had not been holding me tightly. He thought that I would just comply.

“Bella! It’s not safe.” Edward picked me up and started to carry me out of the house.

He put me in his car and was instantly on the other side. “We were almost too late. I am so sorry. We did not know about Victoria or her friend. I thought that you were going to die. Alice’s vision-”

The window in the front of the house smashed as Emma’s pajama clad body rammed through it. She curled up into a ball and rolled on the ground. Emmett and Jasper followed a second later. Emma was already on her feet. She blocked Emmett’s punch and had him on his back in a matter of miliseconds. Jasper lept onto her back and grabbed her neck. I saw Alice and Rosalie step out the remains of the window and approach Emma. I realized what they were doing as Edward peeled out of the drive.

Displaying courage and stupidity, I opened the door and fell out. I ran to Jasper and punded on his back with my fists.

“Let her go!”

Edward picked me up and started taking me to the car.

“LET ME GO! DAMMIT EDWARD ANTHONY MASEN CULLEN! PUT ME DOWN THIS SECOND OR I SWEAR THAT I WILL LEAVE YOU FOR JACOB!” That stopped Edward in his tracks. That stopped everybody. Edward put me down. I did not look at him. Instead I ran and pried a gasping Emma out of Jasper’s grasp.

“Are you all right?” I asked her.

She nodded, “I’ll be fine. Go explain things to your boyfriend,”

Edward. I froze. “Edward, I-”

“Did I pick a bad time?” Victoria asked from the street.

“It’s Vicky!” Emma sneered, standing up.

Victoria glared. “The name is Victoria.”

“Whatever you say, Vicky. Why are you back? Didn’t I totally kick your pale butt once all ready?” Emma cocked her head to the side, looking confused.

Victoria sent Emma the look of death, then stopped. She started laughing maniacly, like she found something amusing. “Are you in pajamas?”

Emma looked down. She was wearing short white pajama shorts with pink and red hearts and a hot pink lace tube tob that showed off part of her six pack. “And your point is?”

Victoria launched herself at Emma who had no problem of pinning her on the ground. The red haired barefoot vampire struggled to no avail. Emma had had training and matched her roughly in strength.

“What do you want?” Emma picked her head up by her hair. Victoria still looked at the ground.

“None of your business,” she seethed.

“Wrong answer.” Emma shoved her hand into the grass. It made an audible thumb. When Emma pulled her back up, there was a small crater. “Try again,”

“Why do you care?” Victoria countered.

“Because I do, Vicky. Edward, take Bella away.”

Edward nodded, confused. He picked a struggling me up, and carried me to the car. “What about you?”

“I’ll be fine.” Emma laughed. “Vicky here is certainly not going to be a problem.”

As we drove away, Edward told his siblings to not hurt Emma.

There were so many things that I wanted to ask Edward. Where had he been? What had taken so long? Why was he worried? What was going to happen to Emma? I did not talk to Edward, though he did try to engage me in conversation. As happy as I was to have my Edward back, I was very worried about Emma.

Edward carried me into his house. Carlise and Esme were waiting on the sofa, their hands clasped together. When they saw us, a lot of the tension on their faces dissappeared.

“Bella!” Esme stood and as soon as Edward set me down, tightly embraced me, “We were so worried! Are you all right?”

“I’m fine!” I hugged Esme back, “I was so worried about you all! You were gone a few days longer than Edward said that you would be.”

“What do you mean, we were back Sunday. We looked everywhere and we for you and we could not find you.” Edward said from my side.

“I was in town Sunday and Monday.” I looked at Edward in confusion.

He looked just as confused and frustrated. I looked at Carlisle. It did not look like he knew any more than we did. Just then, Rosalie, Emmett, Alice, and Jasper carrying Emma walked in. Esme and Carlisle looked around wildly. From her perch over Jasper’s shoulder, Emma said, “You know. This whole blindfold thing was not nesecarry. We went right, left, straight, straight some more, right. Why did we come to your house?”

Jasper rolled his eyes and set her down.

“Thank you.” She pulled off the peice of blanket that was her blindfold. “Izzie?” she exclaimed when she saw me.

“Emma!” I hugged her. All of my worry was gone. I did not need to ask what had happened. I could tell by her forlorn expression. “I’m sorry that you had to see that,”

“Don’t worry.” Emma put on a faux grin. I did not buy it for a minute.

“Since no one else is going to ask, I will. What the hell is going on?” Emmett said.

Esme glared at his choice of words. Rosalie smacked his arm. It made a nice noise. I cleared my throat.

“Every one, I would like you to meet my roommate and best friend,” Emma grinned a real grin at me when I gave her that title. I had thought about it and decided that if Jacob would refuse to talk to me, Emma would be perfect. It sounds cold hearted and I still love Jacob. But I thought of him as a male best friend and Emma as a girl best friend. “Emma Jewell. As you can tell, Emma is a vampire,”

“How do you do?” Esme asked out of habbit.

“Fine, thanks,” Emma smiled a little.

The rest of the Cullens were still wary. Emmett and Edward looked like they were ready to pounce. Rosalie was sizing Emma up physically and Alice looked suddenly much more relieved.

“You are the vampire in my vision,” she told Emma.

“What?” Emma blinked.

“I had vision of an unknown vampire crouched over Bella. Victoria was there.” Alice explained.

“Oh that. That was Monday last week,” Emma said with a wave of her hand.

“What?” Edward shouted and pulled me close to him. “Are you all right?”

“I’m okay, Edward. Really.” I smiled at his protection.

“Sit down and start from the beginning,” Carlisle said in an authorative but kind tone.

Emma misunderstood him and sat on the floor cross legged.

“Well, isn’t this all too familiar?” I muttered as I joined her.

“Explain please,” Alice sang.

“That was how I told Emma to tell me her story,” I explained.

“Funny,” Alice grinned.

Edward sat down next to me and pulled me into his lap, lengthening the space between Emma and I. I could not tell if it was because he did not trust Emma or if it was because he wanted me close. I knew which one I preferred. I snuggled close, burying my face in his chest. I inhaled deeply. He smelled so good. I had missed him so much. I never wanted him to leave again.

Emma started her story where she had with me. I felt it prudent to start from the very beginning, when we were born, so that my family would understand the depth of our relationship. They were an excellent audience. The one that surprised me the most was Rosalie. She was absolutely captiviated by Emma. I could tell that much by her expression.

Carlisle often stopped to ask Emma questions. How badly had Marty beaten her? What else besides her attacker’s voice did she remember? Why Bella? How could she have stood to not have eaten? Why had she fought off Victoria twice? How could she stand being around humans after being a vampire for so little of a time? Did she really not want to drink? Emma answered each question, the smile on her face fading a little bit with each word. I realized that this was the fourth time that she was forced to explain this. It cut her deeply, relieving each memory. I squeezed her hand in mine. When she was finished, the Cullens reacted.

“You poor dear!” Esme exclaimed.

Rosalie was by her side. She hugged Emma tightly. It was the first reaction of such open love that I had seen Rosalie preform. Emma had won Rose over, the one person that I had the hardest time with. I could not tell if that was good or bad.

Alice and Esme came over quickly and gushed over Emma. Are you all right? How did you stand up through so much? They all loved her. I broke free from Edward and joined them. I think that they all knew what I wanted. I was afraid to broach the subject.

“So that’s how you were able to pin me!” Emmett’s merry laughter roared.

“Hmm?” Emma asked.

“When we were fighting, sorry about that by the way, you pinned me. Because you were trained to fight,” he said.

“Just call me Neo,” she giggled.

Rosalie rolled her eyes but smiled. They would all get along wonderfully.

“You need to eat,” Carlisle broke up our fun.

“No, I do not,” Emma answered sourly.

“Yes, darling, you do. Don’t worry, it is not as bad as you think it will be.” Esme petted Emma’s hair.

“I do not want to hurt an animal!” Emma protested.

“Sometimes, we have to do things that we do not want to,” Carlisle said.

“No,” Emma said evenly.

“Emma, if you don’t eat, you will eventually lose control and slaughter innocents, be it animals or humans,” Edward said from behind her.

“I can control it,” she defended herself.

“No. You can’t.” I said, “Emma, I am your best friend. I am not going to lie to you. You have got to eat. Besides, you promised Tanya that you would,”

Edward blinked, “Tanya?”

“Yes. I took Emma up to Denali to see if they could talk some sense into her.” I said.

“How stupid are you?” Edward yelled.

“Not very! Emma needed to drink! Jacob refused to teach her how to hunt! I would have if I had known how! You were gone! We only had one option!” I retorted.

“Bella! How could you think of going to a house full of vampires! They could kill you!” Edward pulled me into his arms.

Where do you think I am right now! I screamed in my mind, pleased that he could not hear my thoughts. Verbally, I said, “You said that they were vegetarians. I knew that we would be safe.”

“That is beside the point, Bella.” Edward would have continued but Emma cut him off.

“Edward, get over it. What’s done is done. Speaking of that, Izzie, it is almost time for Charlie to come home. He’s going to wonder about the broken window,”

“We’ve already taken care of it!” Jasper said, “Emmett threw a baseball in your living room,”

“Good idea,” Emma said.

“Thanks,” Emmett replied.

I did not care at that moment about Charlie or the window. I wanted to know what took the Cullens so long to get back. I asked them. They all looked at me then shifted uncomfortably.

“Why don’t I go take Emma to hunt while you explain everything,” Rosalie suggested.

Everyone save Emma looked at her, shocked at her hospitality.

Carlisle nodded, “That is a grand idea,”

“Okay. This way, Emma dear,” Rosalie took a protesting Emma’s hand and pulled her outside.

“Now, Bella. You said that you were in town on Sunday and Monday.” Carlisle asked me.

“And part of Tuesday,” I added.

Carlisle nodded. “It makes no sense, then, why we could not find you. We returned morning like we planned. Edward ran over to your house and he could not find you. Victoria’s smell had become much more prominent. We split up to go look for you.”

“We could smell another vampire, Emma, around. Her scent was almost as powerful as yours. Then Alice had her vision,” Edward picked up. The others nodded.

“I saw Emma, though I did not know that it was her at the time, crouching over you. Victoria was laughing in the foreground. Your heart was pumping fast and Emma was about to loose control.” Alice offered.

“Emma almost lost control?” I breathed.

Carlisle grimmly nodded. Alice spoke, “I don’t understand how she kept control. All of us, even or especially Edward, would have lost it. She did not even spare you a glance.”

I did not know how near death I was as Emma protected me. I had known that death from Victoria was expected, but I never fathomed that Emma would pose a threat to me.

“We could not find you any where. We went back to your house. Charlie’s thoughts were frantic. You had been gone a while and he was cursing himself for letting you go on a walk.”

“I cursed him too,” Edward growled, “I was sure that Victoria had gotten you. I ran back to the house to tell everyone what had happened. They were already there. The scent of another vampire was oveprowering. She had been everywhere. My room, Alice and Jasper’s room, everywhere. She even played the piano. You scent was just as strong.”

“Edward became convinced that you had come looking for us and Victoria and her friend had gotten you.” Alice said.

“It just pissed him off that she played the piano.” Emmett and Jasper laughed.

I blushed, “The piano is my fault. Emma and I came over here Sunday night. No one was home. Emma asked if she could play it. The house seemed to lifeless that I told her to. I think that she plays better than you do,” I told Edward.

“We’ll see about that,” Edward quipped playfully albeit slight annoyed at the thought of anyone being better at something than him.

I grinned, pleased.

“What time did you all come over?” Esme asked.

“Around seven-thirty,” I answered after thinking for just a second.

“That is bad luck. We were home at seven but then we left and did not come home until eight-thirty,” Esme pursed her lips thoughtfully.

I shrugged. “That’s weird. What happened after that?”

“Well, we kept looking for you. Your scent was every where. Port Angeles, La Push, even up into Alaska. Now, I understand why.” Edward squeezed me tightly.

“I still don’t get how we never saw each other. I get that missing you at your house is one thing, but to keep missing for three days?” I sounded suspicious.

“You are right, Bella. That does sound like it is more than a coinincidence.” Carlisle rubbed his temples thoughtfully, “How much does Emma know about being a vampire?”

“As much as I do. I told her everything that Edward told me.”

“Does she know about powers?”

“Sort of. She knows that Edward, Jasper and Alice have them. She knows that some vampires have them. She has the general idea,” I answered.

“I wonder,” Carlisle mused.

“What are you thinking?” Edward asked. He would make Carlisle say it outloud for every one’s benefit.

“Could Emma have a power? It is too much to say that we were in the same town, loking for eachother and still never met. Forks is not that big. Emma may have a power that influences that some how,” Carlisle thought.

“But Emma wanted to meet you! She was so excited!” I protested.

“I did not mean to insinuate that Emma was deliberately throwing us off eachother’s course. I think that her primal instinct took over and she did not know that she was doing it.” Carlisle quickly explained.

“The more you say it, the more it makes sense,” Jasper agreed. “After Bella, assuming that she did, told her all about the Volturi and Victoria, her guard would have been up, even more so after having a run in with good old Vicky.” He smirked at Emma’s nickname for the insane vampire, “She would have done it accidentally and with out knowing that she had a power, she could not have even hoped to control it.”

“The real question is, what is Emma’s gift?” Alice asked.

We all looked at eachother, stumped. What was her power? Having people avoiding each other? Yeah, that was a good power. Realization dawned on me, though I had not come up with any ideas. It must have been Jasper. He had the look of one who just received a revelation.

“It can’t be,” he breathed, “It is almost too simple,”

“But it makes sense,” Edward said.

“What does?” Emmett asked, not liking that he did not know what his siblings were talking about.

“Emma’s power. It’s bad luck.” Jasper said.

“What?” Alice looked at her husband, confused.

“Yes, bad luck. Emma gives it off. It does not necessarilly effect her but others. That’s why Bella sometimes so clumsy then other times she was as solid as any of us. It explains why we never met up. It shows why the werewolves like her. It is bad luck to have vampires and werewolves in close proximatity together. It all makes sense,” Jasper explained.

Emmett let out his breath, “Now that’s a power.”

Esme nodded. Carlisle did not look so thrilled. “The important question is, now that we know what her power is, what can it do?”

That silenced evey one. How potentially dangerous was Emma? I knew that she would never hurt any one, not intentionally. She probably would have let Victoria go as soon as Edward had gotten me far away. Still, the power of bad luck was a potential threat.

“We don’t know if it is even bad luck,” I pointed out.

“That is true. We do not know for sure. We need to study Emma and find out what exactly it is.” Carlisle agreed with me. That made me glad. “Until then, Bella, you need to be careful. I do not think that she is dangerous. She has certianly taken great pains to ensure your safety.”

“I was bleeding after the accident. She cleaned it and put a band-aid on it,” I interrupted.

“What accident?” Edward bristled.

“We were coming back from Alaska. Mike hit us and totaled my truck.”

“That’s why it wasn’t in the drive way!” Edward exclaimed.

“Umm… yeah. It is destroyed completely. Anyway, I cut my head. Emma was the only one in the car. She cleaned it up nice and pretty.” Edward tensed. I rushed on before his anger at Mike manifested, “We were actually pretty lucky. Emma was driving because I was asleep in the passenger seat. I had not even known that we had left Denali until we were hit. Emma’s side was destroyed. The window shattered every where. The door was crumbled in. Emma’s leg was actually pinned before she pulled it out.”

Edward pulled me close, “And to think that could have been you.”

“I am fine, Edward. Really,” I said.

“I don’t believe you,” he whispered fiercly in my ear.

“Thanks,” I grinned. I loved him just as much as he loved me. It was a fantastic feeling, to be in love. I highly recommend it.

“What are we going to do with Emma?” Alice asked.

“Well what do you think?” Carlisle responded, “She will join our family if she wishes it,”

I smiled. “Really?”

Carlisle smiled back at me, “Of course. It is obvious how close you two are. We do not want to have to seperate you for anything.”

I smiled from ear to ear and hugged Edward with all of my might. “Wait until we tell Emma. She will be so excited.”

“There is another thing that we need to discuss,” Carlisle said.

“What is it?”

Edward stiffened. “Do you still want to be a vampire?” Carlisle gently inquired.

“Yes,” I answered immediately.

Carlisle nodded. “In that case, we need to make preperations. You understand that it means that you will have to leave Charlie, Forks and everything behind?”

I shook my head emphatically, “I have thought it through and I know what I want.”

“Excellent. In that case, I need to go. I have the late shift tonight,”

“Bye, Carlisle,” I said as he dissappeared.

“Bella,” Edward said in a pained voice.

“Yes?” I asnwered him pleasantly.

“Are you sure that this is what you want?”

I nodded, “More than anything,”

“I still don’t like it,”

“You don’t have to,” I chided playfully, trying to lighten his mood.

“We’re home!” Rosalie sang out.

The enitre living room was suddenly full, again. Emma and Rosalie stood side by side, grinning madly. The circles under Emma’s eyes were completely gone and her eyes already had flecks of gold in them.

“Did you have fun?” Esme asked.

Rosalie nodded and Emma chewed her lip, uncertainly. Rosalie rolled her eyes, “Emma is still having issues about killing animals. I told her that she will get over it, eventually.” She met Edward’s eyes and he nodded. I knew that a silent conversation had passed. I wanted to know what had happenedon the hunt.

“Rose!” Alice reprimanded.

“What?” Rosalie had the audacity to look offended.

“Something that will take your mind off it, Emma dear,” Esme broke up the beginnings of a fight, “Is the news that we have for you.”

“What’s wrong?” Emma looked alarmed.

“Nothing is wrong,” Esme laughed, “Carlise and I wanted to extend the invitation for you to join our family. You can be a Cullen if you want.”

“Really?” Emma’s eyes widened.

Esme nodded, “You are welcome to join. We would love for you to, infact.”

Rosalie squealed, “You are going to be my sister! You are my sister!” She hugged Emma and they jumped up and down.

I grinned. They were going to get along. Their names were going to get confusing, I realized. The family would have an Edward, an Esme, an Emmett and an Emma. That would take an adjustment.
