Sigh.

This is so annoying! I have always hated packing.

Why am I packing, do you ask? Well, I am packing to go on my month-long school trip to Las Vegas. At least, that’s what everyone else thinks. You see, I live in Volterra, Italy, and in Volterra there are certain rules. For example, don’t go near the castle, be in your homes my nightfall, stay away from the ash cloaks, and the list goes on and on. And you know what? I want to know why.

So this is the only reason I agreed to go on this stupid trip. For a cover-up to go ‘exploring’.

But I still hated it.

Well, I might as well get it finished. ‘There are only four more things to pack.’ I reminded myself.

I sighed again, but heaved myself off my bed and grabbed the rest of what I needed. An extra sweatshirt, sweatpants, my cell phone charger, and my shampoo and conditioner.

Right when I was zipping up my bag, my mom came bursting through the door, followed by my sullen looking dad.

“Bella!” She sang my name, “It’s almost time to go! Are you ready?”

“Yeah, I just got done packing. And before you ask, yes, I did check everything on the list. Twice.”

She laughed lightly. “Well, that’s good. Sweetheart, me and your father came up here to have a little talk with you…” She trailed off, sounding uncomfortable.

“What is it?” I asked, thoroughly confused.

“Well, sweetie, you have to understand, when you go to Las Vegas there are going to be some men there that may be…attracted to you, and me nor your father are going to be there to warn them to stay away. I know you are a very responsible young lady, but-”

“Mom, are you really worried about that? You know I wouldn’t do anything stupid like that.”

“We know,” My dad said, speaking up for the first time since they came into my room, “but we just wanted to warn you to be careful. We wouldn’t know what to do if anything happened to you.”

“Oh, dad.” I whispered, walking over and wrapping my arms around his waist. “I promise you, you don’t have to worry. I will be okay.”

“I know, I just can’t help but worry, ya know? It’s hard to see you go off like this for this long. Especially to Las Vegas.”

“I know dad. But I’ll be responsible.” I promised, pulling away to smile at him.

“Oh, that was soooo sweet. I didn’t know you could be so heartfelt, Bells.” A voice joked, coming from my bedroom door. I looked over, and saw my best friend, Alyssa, standing in the doorway.

“Shut up.” I demanded, glaring at her smirking face. After about ten seconds of that, we both burst into a fit of giggles.

“Oh, you two girls.” My mother said, clearly amused by our exchange. “Hello there, Alyssa. Did you come over to say goodbye?”

Lissa’s smile disappeared, and was replaced by a frown. “Yes, I did.” She sighed, glancing at me so I knew that yet again she was trying to give me the hint that she didn’t want me to go on the ‘pointless, stupid, idiotic trip’, as said by Lissa countless times.

“Jeez, Liss, you would have thought you’ve gotten over it by now. I mean, I know you’re useless without me, but you can manage a measly month without me, can’t ya?” I said with heavy sarcasm.

“You’re hilarious. But, I also came over here to talk to you before you left. Can I? Alone?”

“Sure. Mom, Dad, can you give us a sec?” I said, trying to keep my voice level. The truth was, I was seriously freaking out about our ‘talk’. I knew this was goodbye, and a long goodbye at that. I know I just joked about it, but truthfully, it was going to be hard on both of us. We did everything together, and this was the first thing we couldn’t do together. It was frightening.

Of course. Come on Charlie.” My mom said, taking my dad’s hand and guiding him out. Just as she was about to shut the door, she gave me an apologetic glance, knowing how hard this was going to be for me, and then she shut the door.

I took a deep breath, desperately trying to calm my thoughts, and slowly turned to face my best friend.
