Bella’s POV

Esme hugged me.

“I’m so sorry,” she said. I shook my head.

“I’m the one who should be apologizing. No matter what I do, Edward still manages to find a way to make trouble,” I replied.

“Yeah, well, it’s not you, Bella,” Rosalie said. “Edward is very dramatic sometimes. I’m just sorry that I missed the obvious when we took our vote. I should’ve voted ‘yes’ and I hope you can forgive me.”

“I saw your point, Rosalie. I knew why you thought I should stay human,” I said. “None of you should be sorry for your vote. It was a difficult position to be in. I don’t even blame Edward. I just hope he can forgive me.”

“Trust me, Bella,” Alice said conspiratorially. “Edward isn’t going to be too difficult. Once he finishes having a virtual heart attack that is!”

“It saddens me to hear that you might not stay with us, dearest Bella,” Aro said. Alice stiffened. A low hiss escaped from Emmett. I bit my bottom lip.

“I hadn’t really thought of that yet. Today has been very overwhelming,” I said. The Cullens looked at me incredulously.

“Well, in all fairness, Aro could have killed her like she asked him to,” Felix interjected. “His offer of a place in the guard is the only reason she’s alive.”

Emmett’s hiss turned into a growl. I held up a hand as he leaned forward. This was going to get out of hand and fast if the boys didn’t control their tempers.

“I will decide what to do after our other guest joins us,” I assured them. “Though, it does seem only fair that I stay with the guard for a little while. I’m not sure what to do. Let’s think happier thoughts. Have you remodeled any old cars lately, Rosalie?”

She looked stunned at my question but quickly smiled. “Who else would pay that much for your crappy old truck?” she asked, laughing. I had wondered at that. “It runs pretty good now, by the way. I hit seventy without a single groan or whine from the engine.”

I giggled. Wow, seventy miles per hour in my hunk-of-junk pick-up. That was a miracle. “New paint job?” I asked. She nodded.

“Of course,” she said. “It’s candy apple red just like my M3. I like that color even though statistics show that red cars attract the most attention from police officers.”

“Canary yellow attracts attention too,” Alice added. I remembered the car she’d stolen on our way to Italy when we were saving Edward.

“When Edward gets here, I’ll tell him to cough up the Porsche,” I assured her. They all laughed, and I was more than happy to keep up the light mood. “Esme, have you done any renovating?”

She nodded excitedly. “Emmett insisted on a game room, so we knocked out the walls in the basement. You get fifteen feet from the wall in every direction before you’re stepping on a gigantic Twister mat. We even rigged up a voice activated spinner. Those boys and their competitive streaks are getting out of hand. How have you been Bella? You’ve obviously been planning this for quite a while.”

“I came up with my plan right after my answer was no. I didn’t want the Volturi coming after all of you so I came on my own. The thought of joining the guard didn’t cross my mind until Aro mentioned it. I said yes because I hoped I could talk to Edward. I know that he was scared for my soul,” I explained. “I wasn’t going to force myself on your family, I promise. If Edward didn’t forgive for coming back here, I planned to stay with the Volturi. After all, I was raised with a healthy respect for the law.”

“I’m very sorry for voting no, Bella,” Carlisle admitted. “I already considered you part of the family, but Edward is a force to be reckoned with when he is against something. Even Emmett only said no because he knows that Edward can be very irrational. I had hoped to explain myself before you left that night, but I didn’t get the chance.”

“It’s all right,” I said. “Everything went how it was supposed to go, I guess.”

Alice straightened immediately. Her eyes slid out of focus, and she mumbled in fragments.

Don’t want to deal with this... sorry Esme... sorry Carlisle...no other way... what???”

She came back to the present with a sudden jolt. “He’ll be here in two minutes,” she said. “Bella, can you please hide? He needs to see us before he sees you.”

I nodded walking back to the transformation room. I couldn’t see what was going on; nonetheless, I could still hear it. The door flew wide as he stormed into the room. He gasped. I assumed he was seeing his family.

“What are you all doing here?” he asked.

“We’re stopping you from trying to do something stupid, again,” Alice said, sounding annoyed. “This would be the millionth time in the last year that you’ve decided against listening to me. Do you want to regret it this time, too?”

“She doesn’t want me Alice. I have no purpose here. Bella ordered me away. For all I know, she with Jacob Black now,” he spat. I opened the door and walked forward five paces.

“No, I’m not,” I said. He turned to look at me and gasped. I continued. “I do want you,” I assured him, walking forward, “and you do have a purpose here.”

His eyes were wide with disbelief. “Bella,” he whispered. “How?”

“I came here for the same reason you did,” I told him. Pain twisted his features. “Aro offered me a place with the guard, and I accepted.”

“You joined the Volturi?” he asked incredulously. “I never wanted you to be a vampire. This isn’t the life I wanted for you!”

“No, I guess it isn’t. As I recall, you wanted me to get old and die. Wow, you really love me a lot,” I yelled. I could feel my temper rising. Jasper was inching forward slowly, but Edward was too close to me.

“He does love you, Bella,” Chelsea blurted out. “I can see the intensity of your relationship. Every relationship has an aura. When two people stand close to each other, I can see a certain color surrounding them. Call me girlie, but each level of love has its own shade of pink. The two of you have a very violent shade of pink that’s outlined in red. I couldn’t even tamper with that kind of love. I couldn’t do anything to any of you Cullens, and trust me Bella, you are a Cullen whether this idiot likes it or not.” She motioned to Edward.

“I never had anything against her being a Cullen,” Edward mumbled. “It was the vampire part that I didn’t like.”

“Well, deal with it. There’s no going back now. If you’ve got a problem with Bella, leave so she can train,” Felix demanded. Aro shot him a look of disapproval.

“Young Edward, the offer I gave during your last visit still stands,” he said hopefully.

“I have no wish to be one of your minions, but it is up to Bella. I will go where she goes,” Edward replied. I smiled but then bit my lip. How was I to decide?

“I’m going to put it up to all of you. The vote didn’t work in my favor last time, but maybe this one will be enlightening,” I said. “Aro, where should I be?”

“You must go where your heart is, of course, but I hope that you will stay with the guard,” he replied. I nodded, acknowledging his vote.

“Alice?”

“Come home with us,” Alice answered promptly.

“Caius?”

“This is ridiculous. The guard is where you belong.”

“Jasper?”

“Cullens.”

“Alec?”

“The guard could use your talents, but Chelsea’s right. You are a Cullen.” Aro smiled at his answer, but Caius narrowed his eyes. I ignored them

“Emmett?”

“Cullens.”

“Jane?”

“The guard needs you.”

“Rosalie?”

“The Cullen family needs you more,” she said, countering Jane’s reply. Jane rolled her eyes.

“Felix?”

“Guard.”

“Esme?”

“Edward,” she said. “Go where ever you wish to be, but keep Edward at your side. And if you choose the guard, visit often.”

“That’s a whole different category, Esme, but I like it,” I said. “Chelsea.”

Instead of answering me, she looked to Aro. “Master, this vote is futile. Bella belongs with the Cullens. Her aura is connected to them all with varying shades of pink,” Chelsea said. She walked over, and touched her finger to his palm. Aro nodded at whatever he was seeing as Marcus drifted into the room.

“When the sun sets, go back to America,” Marcus said. He sounded almost interested in what was going on. It was the voice of a man who’d lived too long. “I’d advise chartering a private jet with one so young tagging along.”

He looked me right in the eyes. “Never live without your love. I have been without my love for so long that the world ceases to interest me.”

Caius looked furious, but Aro nodded in agreement.

“He is right, brother,” Aro said to Caius. I still didn’t feel right about leaving after all they’d done for me.

“I’d be happy to help out sometimes,” I said. Aro smiled.

“That would be wonderful, dearest Bella,” he said hopefully. “Perhaps the other young Cullens will teach you to defend yourselves. If memory serves young Edward and me correctly, Emmett is a formidable opponent in a wrestling match!”

Emmett laughed in a way that made me wary, but I smiled as the sun set. We chartered our plane and left Volterra. I didn’t let myself look back, but I had a feeling I would return soon. I pushed the thought away and looked at Edward. With him my future would be brighter than the sunshine coming in the window as we chased it west!
