I raced down the stairs to answer the knock at the door. Alice stood on the stoop, graceful even in absolute stillness.

“Oh, hi Alice. What’s up?” I asked breathlessly.

“We need your help. Would you mind coming with me?” Alice’s pixie-like face looked worried.

“Uh, sure. What’s wrong?” I stammered. Why would a houseful of super strong vampires need my help?

“Good. Close your eyes, we’re running. We don’t have time to drive.” Alice’s granite arms swept me up and threw me over her shoulder as gently as she could, and then, we were off.

It felt kind of like flying. Then, all too soon, it came to an end.

“Open your eyes.” Alice’s voice, suddenly harsh, demanded.

I was not expecting what I saw. Five wolves stood in a circle, surrounding one. It was russet colored, and had dark brown, friendly eyes that I would know anywhere.

“Jake!” I heard my voice wheeze.

The wolf’s head snapped around, and looked straight at me. Then, he went back to pacing around the circle. Then, suddenly, he lunged at one of the others.

The largest one jumped in front, and bore him to the ground.

“What-what’s going on?” I demanded, asking anyone who would answer me. To my surprise, it was Bella’s voice who answered me.

“He freaked out when Sam decided to let Edward change me. He’s been doing this since dawn.” Bella’s voice dripped with anger, but also with compassion.

Edward walked up behind her, and draped an arm over her shoulder, his jaw clenched angrily. “We would be-in your debt, if you could calm him down. The do-“ He stopped at Bella’s glare, “Sam, said if anyone could convince him, you could.”

I stared at them, then over at the circle of wolves.

“Jacob William Black! What are you doing?” I shouted.

The russet wolf’s head swung around, and he growled in my direction.

Before, that would have terrified me, but by now, almost two months after I had discovered that he was a werewolf, I just grew angry.

I guess it’s a good thing that Bella’s transformation was put off. Otherwise I’d be running scared right now.

Originally, Bella was going to be changed immediately, the night the decision was reached, but Alice had another vision, this one showing another catastrophe had befallen someplace called, Vol-something, Volti- no, Volter, Volterra, yes, Volterra, and the Volturi had to deal with it before they could come after Bella and the Cullens.

Anyway, the change had been scheduled for this morning, but it obviously couldn’t happen while Jacob and the other members of the Pack were outside.

“Change back,” I demanded, having come a long way from the trembling mess I used to become whenever he phased.

He growled again, and leapt over the shortest wolf’s head -- Paul, I thought, and came to rest near me. Sam -- the biggest wolf -- roared, and grabbed Jake by the scruff of the neck, yanking him back toward the circle.

I walked carefully towards the circle myself; I was braver, but not stupid. Those wolves could crush me with one paw.

I tapped who I thought was Embry on the shoulder of his forepaws, and said, “Excuse me. I think I’m going to need to get a little closer.”

Embry swung toward Sam’s regal form, then stepped aside. Sam must have told him it was ok through their mind-link.

I walked through the mass of furry bodies to my werewolf. Jacob Black, my boyfriend of almost a year, Quiluete werewolf.

“Jake,” I murmured, “What are you doing?” I knelt by his side and immediately felt dwarfed by his towering form.

I stroked the silky fur on his back, not knowing how to accomplish what I wanted to do.

“Come on. Let’s go for a walk.” I stood, and started towards the forest. When he didn’t move, I sighed.

“Are you really going to let me go into the woods alone? What if I get eaten by a wild animal?” I purposely kept moving, and soon felt his presence behind me.

“Change back, I can’t carry on a conversation with a wolf.”

He snorted, and in a moment a half clad young man stood before me. He had been letting his hair grow out since last year, and now it nearly reached his shoulders, and he had grown a few more inches, reaching 6'7. Other than that he was the same Jacob I had met at the movies on that fateful night.

He had a sullen expression on his face, somehow managing to look livid as well.

“Angela, I can’t let them do this! Bella is my best friend … I can’t let them turn her into a monster!” He was practically yelling by the end of his sentence.

“Jake, the Cullens are no more monsters than you are. Well, Rosalie and Jasper are pretty scary, but really, they aren’t monsters. And Bella won’t be one either.”

“How do you know?” He sounded desperate, like his life was hanging on the answer.

“Because I know Bella. She’s kind, and loving, and funny, and this is what she wants. Who are you to tell her what she can and cannot do with her life? It’s hers. And you know what? If she doesn’t get changed, she’s going to be miserable. And that would be your fault. Could you deal with that?”

Jacob’s face was torn with indecision. I could tell that this was hurting him, coming close to causing him physical pain.

I patted the log I was sitting on, signaling for him to join me. He sat, and I wrapped my arms around his torso.

“It’s going to be a change,” I admitted. “Bella is my best friend too, remember? We won’t be able to be around her for a while, but we’ll see her again. And she’ll be the same old Bella.”

“You don’t know that,” he said quietly.

“Not for sure,” I agreed. “But I’m going to keep thinking that until I’m proven wrong. Now, let's go apologize for holding things up, and you have some serious groveling to do.”

At his confused expression, I raised an eyebrow. “Your brothers? You were attacking them.”

Jake shrugged. “They’ll get over it. None of them have any room to talk. They’ve all done some stupid things too.”

He stood, and laced his fingers through mine. “As long as I don’t have to stay and watch.”

“I don’t think we’d be allowed if we wanted to. Come on.”

The vampires and werewolves had formed two circles when we returned, as far away from each other as they could get. Bella sat with the vampires, looking disappointed and sad.

They all looked up as we approached, taking heart in the fact that we were holding hands and Jake looked human.

He looked toward his brothers. “Let’s go home.”

Bella rushed towards me and hugged me tightly. "Thank you so much. I'll see you as soon as I can."

I smiled, and nodded. I knew my friend would be around when I needed her.

Then she turned to Jake. "It'll be ok, I promise." She said, hugging him tightly as well.

He pulled away, looking upset again. Edward growled menacingly in the back of his throat, and I took an involuntary step back.

"Bye Bella. See you soon." I said, beginning to pull Jacob away.

She raised a hand in farewell, then turned away and began walking towards the house, hand in hand with Edward.

This will most likely be the last time I see her as a human. I realized, and smiled. Oh well, she would be the same when I saw her next.
