Times had become difficult for Bella Swan. Not only she had become the talk of the town after the Cullen’s sudden departure, but she had to cope with school and trying not to worry Charlie too much…and now she began wondering if she was losing it. After all, hearing voices in her own head couldn’t be good…although it made her very happy. She wondered how much longer she could endure it all…Edward’s absence, Charlie’s unhappiness and being ostracized by her schoolmates. Jessica had told them all about their night out in Port Angeles. Anyway, it didn’t matter right now…she just wanted to hear him again. Just once. Bella paced faster through the woods towards her meadow…their meadow, finally reaching her destination.

Catherine was lying on her back, her golden hair spread sparkling under the warm, gentle rays of sun coming through the tree branches. She closed her eyes, and slowly opened again. It was one of those rare sunny days Forks experienced…She sat up and finally realized Bella was standing a few feet away from her.

“Hi. How are you?” asked Cathy sympathetically.

“I’m…I’m…” whispered Bella, unable to finish the sentence.

“It’s ok. If you need anything, feel free to ask…I…I know it’s not the same, but I’m going through a hard time as well. Fitting in is being extremely hard for me…with all my friends far away…far from the place I call home”.

“Thanks, it means a lot” said Bella.

“And don’t worry about Jessica and everyone else…they’re just a bit upset because they want their friend back.”

Before Bella could answer, a figure stepped out from the trees, about 6 feet away from both girls. It was Laurent, one of the vampires from James’ coven. Bella felt a knot down her throat, unable to move or say anything. Catherine stared motionless, her hand slowly making its way to her pocket, where her wand was kept.

“Bella?” Laurent asked, looking from Bella to Cathy.

“I thought…I thought you had gone to Alaska.”

“I did go…I found the Cullen place empty, so I thought they had moved on.” said Laurent eyeing Cathy greedily.

“Oh, well…they did move on,” said Bella bitterly.

“Hmmm…I’m surprised they left you behind…Do they visit often?”

“Yes. All the time,” smiled Bella nervously.

“It didn’t seem so. The house looked abandoned to me.

“Come on, Bella. We have to go,” interrupted Cathy, pulling Bella away.

“I see you have a friend. I love your perfume by the way…”

Bella cringed at those words. She didn’t care if she got into trouble herself, but she just couldn’t bear dragging someone into this mess with her. Still, there was something odd at the way Cathy behaved…almost as if she knew the same things, almost as if they shared the same secret without knowing. But that was just impossible. To know that vampires existed you had to be one. Or at least date one.

“Did Victoria ever find you?” Bella asked before she could help herself.

“Yes, that’s why I’m here…as a favor to her. She asked me to see if you were still being protected by the Cullens…and to find a way to you. She’s very resentful…after all, your Edward killed her mate and she needs to even things out by killing his mate as well.”

Bella stopped breathing for a moment, trying to make sense of his words…yes, she was right to expect the worse. Catherine’s thugging brought back her back to reality. She looked into those anxious looking green eyes, somewhat dark now. Did she know what was going on? Was she completely aware of the situation?

“I suppose she’ll be angry all the same…after I kill you myself…after all, I’m so thirsty…It’s been a while since I’ve had a decent meal, with all that vegetarian thing going on in Alaska. I’m doing you a favor…Victoria would have been ruthless…You won’t feel a thing with me, I promise”.

--------------------------

Bella landed on the floor with a loud thud, hitting her head hard. She looked around, confused, only identifying her location after a few seconds. She was in her room. Bell stood up, and realized that Catherine was standing next to the window. Both girls faced each other silently, thinking what they were going to say; Cathy was looking for a plausible excuse and Bella was trying to make sense of things.

The door was locked downstairs and footsteps coming up the stairs were heard. Charlie had come home.

“Bella,” called Charlie coming into her room, “oh. You have company. You’re Catherine, right?”

“Yeah, Cathy, actually. You’re Chief Officer Swan” said Catherine nervously.

Charlie looked at both girls seeming extremely pleased Bella had invited someone over. Maybe things were going back to normal and Bella was getting over things.

“Oh. Bella, I’ll be downstairs…I’ll let you girls go back to whatever you were doing. I don’t want to stand in your way. Nice meeting you, Cathy”.

“How…We were in the meadow…and now we’re here…I don’t understand…we appeared in my room, out of thin air. Like magic.” trailed off Bella.

Catherine stood very still looking at Bella, not saying a word. However, the look in her green eyes, and the thin, long object she held in her hand answered her question. The truth finally hit Bella.
