“What are you doing here Bella?” Jacob asked again, but more resigned then angry. I just looked down at my feet. I knew Jacob was in pain due to me and I didn’t do any good in showing up in his home town either.

“I’m sorry,” I said quietly. What else could I have said? I shuffled my feet and waited for him to yell at me to get out of La Push.

“What’s wrong, Bella?” he asked suddenly. I looked up at him in shock. He must have seen the confusion on my face because he clarified. “The last time I saw you, you were on the other side of the country! And now you are back in Washington with this guy in tow,” he explained, pointing at Hermes. He straitened up and stared down at me. “Either something is wrong or you just love to torment me.” He narrowed his eyes at me. My mouth fell open in shock.

“What do you mean ‘in tow’?” Hermes said, stepping forward. He stuck out his chest and loomed over Jacob. “If anything she is following me,” he said like Jacob horribly insulted him. Jacob raised en eyebrow and I rolled my eyes.

“So what’s wrong, Bella?” Jacob asked, turning his attention back to me. I took a deep breath and looked the other way.“I don’t know what to do next,” I said quietly. “The Cullens are captured by the Volturi, Beck is gone, and Kate is still after me.” I kept my gaze aimed away from Jacob; if I was human I would have been blushing.

“Geez, Bella,” Jacob groaned. “What are you doing here then?” he asked, his voice strained. I shrugged.

“I don’t know. Beck brought me here,” I grumbled. I didn’t like being glared at by six werewolves.

“If you want our help, Bella, you’re going to have to be more polite,” Jacob said disapprovingly. I came to attention immediately.

“What?” I asked. Jacob looked confused.

“Don’t you want our help?” Jacob clarified.

“Of course I do!” I practically yelled.

“Hey,” Paul growled. “Wait one second, will you?” He glared at Jacob. “Don’t get us messed up in her problem.” Jacob glared right back.

“Are you forgetting whose family saved my life?” he asked impatiently. Paul rolled his eyes.

“Are you forgetting whose life was saved by you?” Paul asked, referring to my cliff-diving episode. “We don’t owe her anything,” he hissed. I looked back at the ground, my embarrassment growing. They were completely right. They didn’t owe me anything. In fact, I only caused them pain. I turned around and started to walk towards the main road.

“Where are you going, Bella?” Hermes asked confused. I blinked a couple of times.

“They’re not going to help us,” I said confused. “I’m going to the air port.”

“Well, then so am I,” Jacob announced. I whipped around to stare at him. I then remembered why Jacob was my best friend. The rest of the pack looked at Jacob like he was crazy.

“Dude! You’re going fight the largest vampire coven in the world!” Jared exclaimed. “Sure you’re strong, but not that strong!” Jacob planted his feet and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Bella was my best friend,” he said stubbornly. “And I’m not going to live my life knowing that I may have been able to save her.” He turned his back on his pack and walked over next to me. “Either you come or you don’t,” he said simply. All heads turned towards Sam. He looked doubtful for a moment but then looked at me. As soon as our eyes met I saw him soften.

“I have been wanting to fight the Volturi ever since I learned of them,” Sam explained. A look of determination was suddenly on Sam’s face. “And I’m not going to rest until I get a bite out of one of them.” He then walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed. “Anyway, Emily would kill me if she found out that I turned you away,” he whispered in my ear. I chuckled and watched in wonderment as the rest of the werewolves surrounded me.We were all riled up and ready for action. We all piled into Jacob’s Rabbit, which was really hard considering there was eight of us, and drove to the air port. All of the werewolves had to say goodbye to their families first, of course, and I had a pang on guilt. What if they never come home? I looked out the window of the Rabbit and I swore that I saw Cerberus lurking in the woods. I closed my eyes and tried to calm myself down. I knew that if I did get into trouble and needed help, I had a back up crew that would surely help me out. The werewolves helped me out before and I wondered how many times I would call on them in the future. I smiled as I looked around at the Pack. Even if we were mortal enemies, I knew I could always count on the werewolves. Hermes paid for the flight. ‘Courtesy of the Underworld’ he said. I rolled my eyes at him, but I wondered secretly if Hell would want me to pay them back. As we started the several hour flight to Maine I turned towards Hermes.

“Right now I really wish you still had your wings,” I grumbled. We could all hitch a ride then. Hermes glared at me.

“If I had my wings you would be dead right now,” he said seriously. I closed my mouth and wondered if I actually had some luck after all. But when the man behind me started to puke, I shot that thought from out of my mind. It was going to be a long flight. And I was eager to save my family.
