“Hi!” The girl had a smile so huge, I thought it would pop off her face. She waved her hand at me and was snapping gum in her mouth. I blinked. My eyes shifted back and fourth from the vampire and the girl. Am I dreaming? Is my subconscious imagination really this out of control?
“Who are you?” I blurted out suddenly. Finally, the vampire (who had been looking at the floor this entire time) looked up and smiled a real smile. He didn’t have the same effect on me as Edward did, but this man was beautiful. He looked about 20 years old, and he was wearing a long, black, over jacket… dude, it’s summer.
“So sorry for the intrusion, madam. I am Daniel Hartman and this is my little sister, Alyson Hartman.” He looked like he was about to say something else when the girl snorted and rolled her eyes.
“Dan, shut up; don’t try to use all that gentleman crap. Hey, I’m Ally and this is Dan. We’ve been travelin’ for who knows how long, so could we just come in and sit down before we start talkin’?” Ally asked. I raised an eyebrow. I knew that if he wanted to kill me, he wouldn’t need to come in, so I guess it was safe, right? He did have topaz eyes. Man, I wish Edward was here.
“Uh, sure, come in; I’m Bella.” The man looked back down and held his hand out for his sister to go first. She walked right in, plopped down on the sofa, and grinned at me; completely at home. The man shook his head and smiled apologetically at me.
“Sorry, my sister is a little straight forward. I can completely understand your uneasiness right now.” He stood behind his sister’s seat in an almost guard-like fashion.
“Alright, well, do you wanna talk or should I, bro?” Ally asked, looking up at her brother. He was still looking at me when he answered.
“You may, but please throw away your gum, Alyson, it is giving me quite a headache.” He ran a hand through his hair and leaned on the sofa. Ally got up, grabbed a tissue on the ground next to the sofa, (for me, when I was sneezing earlier) and threw her gum in it.
“Right, ok. So I’ll start from the beginning. When I was 6 and Dan was 10, my parents died and we ended up in an orphanage down in Dallas, Texas. After he turned 18, Dan moved out and took me with him and we went to live in Virginia. He started working and I went to school and things were pretty quiet for a while.
Then a year later, on his way home from work, he got bitten. As you may have noticed, Dan here is a vampire. The guy who bit him took him to an empty warehouse and when the transformation was complete, he kinda told him what the hell was goin’ on. Dan went crazy angry. He stormed out and went to look for me. I was really worried because it had been three days since Dan had came home and I was runnin’ around all of Virginia to look for him. We finally found each other and he told me what happened. I was kinda freaked out at first, but then I was like cool. Except it wasn’t too cool.
During the time he was looking for me, Dan was dealing with this horrible thirst and he drank from animals because he knew it was wrong to drink from humans. We met with the vamp that turned Dan and he told us to go to Alaska and that Dan’s power was resistance from humans.
See, Dan was really freaked out by blood when he was human and now, when he’s a vamp, he doesn’t have the instinct to drink from humans, only animals. So yeah, we didn’t have enough money for a car but Dan ran all the way from Virginia to Alaska with me on his back. He made it in like 4 days!
It was pretty fun, ‘cuz I like to move fast. Anyway, we took a visit to the Denali clan and they told us to visit y’all here in Forks. The Cullens. We just went to the address that Tanya gave us, but there wasn’t anyone in there. Dan sniffed out one of the vamp’s scent to your house, the school and this pretty meadow, and so here we are!” Ally finished. She had said the entire story in top speed, her hands flying around the place trying to emphasize certain parts.
I felt kind of awed. Here was this vampire who had just been changed less than a month ago, and was already battling his demons better than any other vampire. I wondered if because he was freaked out by blood that I would be the same once I was changed.
“Wow. That’s some story.” I managed to say. Dan let out a quiet chuckle and Ally beamed.
“Thanks, I’ve got amazin’ storytellin’ skills. Now, how bout you tell us your story too?” she said.
“Hmm, ok, but aren’t you hungry?” I meant to ask Ally, but I guess it worked out for both.
“No, I fed just outside the town.” Dan said quietly.
“Dude! I’m starvin’! Thanks for askin’!” Ally jumped up and hugged me. She was sure an exuberant and excited person. Dan creased his eyebrows together in disapproval. I stood up and patted her on the back. Suddenly I felt her shaking in sobs. She let out a sniffle and in a flash, Dan was next to me and also patting Ally’s hair.
“Ally, sweetie, what’s wrong?” Dan asked in a low soothing tone. I could tell he loved his sister a lot.
“I—I’m so sorry. Here I am crying in your arms. It’s just so much. Telling that story was like watching a bad movie. Me and Dan have been through so much and you’re the first human I’ve hugged in like forever.” I felt so bad. I already liked Ally. It was so sad the way her whole life has been crazy. I looked up and I saw pain contorting Dan’s beautiful features.
“I’m sorry, Al.” He whispered to her. She still had her head on my shoulder when she sniffled loudly and mumbled, “it’s not your fault, Dan my man.” She laughed and lifted her head up. Daniel handed her the box of tissues and she wiped herself clean.
“Sorry, sometimes, the teen in me gets out and cries herself to death. Oh, no pun intended.” She looked up. Dan and I laughed. I headed towards the kitchen and took out the cold enchiladas from last night. I put them into the microwave and I turned around.
“Bella, how old are you?” Ally asked. Dan was leaning against the doorway, looking calm.
“I’m 18, you?”
“I turned 16 about a week ago.”
“Oh, Happy Late Birthday. Did you celebrate it?”
“Thanks. Well, Dan bought this for me on the way to Alaska, but I didn’t really have a party or anything.” Dan sighed and unbuttoned his jacket. Ally reached into one of his pockets and pulled out a thick booklet. She handed it to me, and she was smiling her big smile again.
With a pang of guilt and pain I saw that it was a car magazine. It was exactly like the one Jacob Black had used when he was working on our bikes and on his rabbit. The sudden memories of his garage and tools came back to me in a rush.
I gripped on to the counter and put on a fake smile for my guests. I handed the magazine back to Ally and turned around, opening the microwave and taking out the food.
“That’s cool. So you like cars?” I said in a hollow voice.
“Oh, I love them. I used to spend all my time sitting around in the nearest repair shop watchin’ people work on cars. I don’t know why, I get kind of obsessive around a project.” This can’t be real. Jake had said the exact same thing to me before he was even a wolf.
“Well, I hope you like spicy food, because the enchiladas are ready.” I said in fake cheeriness, in an effort to distract myself.
“Bella, are you alright?” Dan asked. He walked over and pulled out both chairs for Ally and me. He was looking at me with an interested expression. I guess he could see through me.
“Well, I guess I have to tell you my story now, huh?” I said quietly, looking down at the table. I didn’t take any food because I was still sick.
“That sounds good.” Ally said, munching. I looked at her. She was young, too young to be going through all these troubles. She was wearing a white T-shirt that said “LOUD” on it and blue jeans. Her eyes were brown and she had soft features.
“Well…” I told them a lot. I ran through a quick history of the divorce, Renee and Charlie, Phil, moving here, the Cullens, Edward and I, when he left (I didn’t go through much on that) then, I told them about Jake and then the pack, and then about Italy and the Volturi, finishing with graduation, Edward’s proposal, the wedding, and my plans to be turned.
“Damn girl!” Ally yelped when I finished my story.
“Alyson! Language!” Dan said sternly towards his sister.
“Sorry bro. Wait, so let me get this straight, werewolves are real too?” she asked. I nodded.
“It’s one of the Quileute legends; when vampires appear, so do they. They’re immortal enemies. I don’t know why, exactly, but it happens.” I sighed.
“Woo, if our story sounded like a bad movie, yours sounds like a fiction novel.” She laughed. By now, she was done eating, and I had cleared the table. We were sitting in the living room and I barely noticed when 2 hours had gone by.
“Can I meet ‘em?” Ally suddenly asked. I was taken aback; she wanted to meet a pack of werewolves?
“Uh…why?” I asked. Dan was silent the entire time we were talking except one time he said, ‘understandable’ when I was talking about the Cullens leaving after my 18th birthday party.
“I don’t know; I just want to. I wanna see Jake, he seems like a cool guy if he likes cars…” she asked eagerly. I didn’t even know what to say.
“Ally, I don’t think this is a good idea.” Dan frowned. I knew he had the same issues with “being safe” around the pack as Edward did.
Edward. I hadn’t even realized I forgot about him. Why wasn’t he calling, didn’t Alice see a vampire come to our house? Why wasn’t Edward calling me and freaking out? Hmm, that’s strange.
“Danny! Please??” I looked up and Ally was giving Dan the cutest puppy pout I had ever seen in my life. She had her lip jutted out and her eyes were wide. If Dan could refuse that, he would be superman.
Apparently he couldn’t.
“Fine.” He sighed. “But I’m coming with and when I say it’s time to go, it’s time to go. No touching, no out-of-my-sight, and NO doing anything if Bella says not to. I don’t know anything about these werewolves, but Bella does, and if you don’t obey these rules, I’ll be happy to take that magazine back.” Dan said parentally.
Ally got up yelled “yay!” and hugged him.
She started whirling around in circles and singing “we’re gonna see some werewolves, we’re gonna see some werewolves!” Wow, excitement is bit of an understatement for Ally.
“Um, I’m going to just call Edward really quick.” I got up and dialed his cell number on the phone. A woman came on saying “this phone is out of range” and the phone went dead. I sighed.
“What’s up?” Ally asked.
“Nothing, Edward’s cell is out of range. I’ll go get dressed and then I can drive us to La Push.” Dan nodded.
“Oooh, that old truck out on the driveway is your car?” she asked surprised. I smiled and nodded, walking up the stairs and to my room. I grabbed a pair of jeans and slid into them, pulling off my old T-shirt and putting on a flannel shirt. I brushed through the tangles in my hair and put it up into a twisty hair clip. I went back downstairs to see Ally watching Monster Garage on the discovery channel and Dan standing next to her.
“You are so much like Jake, it’s killing me.” I said coming down and grabbing my keys off the hook on the wall. Ally just smiled and turned off the TV, following me outside. Dan followed silently behind.
“Why don’t you get a new car?” Ally asked as we were driving down the highway.
“Well, Edward is practically begging to buy me a new one, but I don’t want to, I mean this car is sensible and just because he drives like a maniac doesn’t mean that I have to.” I laughed. The car groaned and died out in front of Billy’s house. I turned off the engine and opened the door, letting Ally and Dan get off.
We walked up to the house and I suddenly felt nervous all over again. I walked up and before I could knock on the door, Jake ran out and looked angry.
“NO BLOODSUCKERS ON OUR LAND!” he yelled at me. I gulped. He looked bigger and… meaner.
“Well, hello to you too, Jake.” This was not how I imagined our next greeting.
“Bella, what the HELL is going on? Who is this?” he snarled, pointing at Dan, who was standing next to me. Suddenly Sam, Embry, Jared, Paul and Quil were standing behind him, with nothing but pants on. Quil, I guess he changed too.
“Jake, calm down.” Sam said calmly. He looked at me and raised an eyebrow. That held enough questions without him saying anything. I realized that they hadn’t seen Ally yet, because she was behind Dan and me. I moved a little and she smiled at me thankfully, before turning around to look at the boys. I cleared my throat.
“We aren’t breaking the stupid treaty, he’s not a Cullen. This is Alyson and Daniel Hartman, and they just wanted to meet you guys.” I looked back and Sam was nodding, probably angry underneath the calmness. The other pack members were frowning but when I looked back at Jake, he wasn’t frowning; he was shocked at something.
His hands were trembling and I could hear his harsh breathing. His eyes were wide and his jaw was hanging open. He blinked. And I realized that he wasn’t staring at me, he was staring at Alyson.
