“Edward! Goddamnit! Pick up the phone! That’s what a stupid cell phone is for!” I yelled into the speaker and hung up, slamming the phone on the cradle. After calling three times, I left a delightful little message on his voicemail.
“You know, you should do some yoga. It releases your aggression better than slamming the phone down for getting mad at a perfect fiancée.” Ally chattered behind me. I growled unimpressively—at the word ‘fiancée’ and at the whole statement—and sank deeper into the couch.
“If he’s such a perfect fiancée he would have called me back by now. Where the hell is he?” I grumbled.
It was now about 5 o’clock and Ally was braiding my hair and babbling about how amazing Jake was and how everything was so perfect. Dan had left a while ago because he insisted that he needed some ‘alone time’. Yeah right. It was just because Ally was annoying him to death—figuratively, of course.
“Oh my gosh, did I say thank you for letting me borrow that perfect dress and those wonderful shoes? Tonight is going to be so fantastic! Oh, did I tell you that I loved the way you did my hair?” Ally was talking at full speed, and once again I was grateful that she wasn’t a vampire or else she would literally be jumping off the walls.
“Ally! I think you really need to calm the heck down. Charlie is about to be here and if he sees you act this way, he might think your psycho and lock you up in a ward or something.” I felt the need to shout to make her hear me. She went quiet for about 10 seconds and then started to hum a familiar song. Then she started to yell out loud:
When the working day is done,
They wanna have fu-un.
Just wanna have fun...
Wanna have fun.
Wanna have. Fun.
Suddenly I heard the front door bang open and Charlie ran into the living room with hand on the gun in his left hip.
“Who are you and what are you doing with my daughter?” Charlie yelled at Ally. I jumped up and started laughing.
“Dad, calm down! This is Alyson and she’s not doing anything with me! Well, except annoying me to death.” I laughed, poking her shoulder. Ally giggled and stood up too, waving at Charlie. She sauntered over to him and held out her hand.
“Well hey there, you must be Mr. Swan! I’ve heard tons about you! Call me Ally.” She said, flipping her hair and batting her eyelashes. Was she buttering him up already?
“Oh. Well…hi, Ally. Sorry for the overreaction, I just…well, I haven’t heard anyone singing in this house for quite awhile.” Charlie blushed a little and looked down. I guess he was talking about a long time ago when he would come home and hear Renee singing in the kitchen.
“Here, dad, I made your favorite; some beef stroganoff. Oh, and Ally here helped me make some cookies for dessert.” I smiled. Ally started humming again and went into the kitchen, putting the food out. Charlie still looked confused as he hung up his belt and sat on the table.
“So. Bells? Would you like to explain your new friend a little better?” Charlie asked me. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and I ran out, knowing it was Dan. When I opened the door he was looking suspiciously around, obviously smelling Charlie in the house.
“Come in, Dan. I want you to meet my dad.” I led him to the kitchen and he stood politely as Charlie stood up with a shocked expression.
“Mr. Swan, this is my lovely brother; Daniel.” Ally said. Dan nodded his head and smiled, holding out his hand. Charlie was obviously too flustered to say anything as he shook it.
“Daddy, Dan and Ally are here visiting Edward’s family. They are his…old friends. They didn’t know that the family was off…camping; so I told them they could stay here until they come back. If that’s ok with you?” I asked Charlie, knowing that he would have no choice but to say yes.
“Yeah, Mr. Swan. We wouldn’t want to intrude; but it would be helpful to stay here, with a friend rather than stay in a cheap hotel.” Ally was laying it on thick, but it was like she was an expert on doing things they didn’t want too. Charlie looked mesmerized, and she isn’t even a vampire! I had no idea that even humans could dazzle my dad. Poor Charlie.
“Sure, you’re welcome to stay as long as you wish! Oh, and call me Charlie.” He grinned a smile that crinkled his eyes and made him look about 20 years younger. I wish I had that effect on him, too…
“Oh! Thank you so much, Charlie! So tell me how hard and tough it is being a cop. I hear all these horrible stories about how brutal that job is.” Ally said, we all sat down at the table and Dan politely refused to eat anything. Ally was the opposite; eating just as much as Charlie while he talked more than I had ever seen him. I found that I could eat a little without feeling sick, so maybe the infection was wearing off.
After we were done eating, and everything was cleaned, Ally insisted on getting ready for the firelight festival (which Charlie was very cheerful about) and so we went upstairs and I pulled out the suitcase in which I kept all of the stuff Alice bought me from her various shopping trips.
Ally pulled on a spaghetti-strapped green dress that fell to her knees and danced across her small outline nicely. She looked like a fairy come to life, complete with her hair in brown little curls that framed her face, and then the green ballet shoes that she tied onto her feet. For a girl who would rather fix cars then play dress up, she was pretty darn endearing. With another pang of jealousy I started to pull out a pair of jeans until Ally stopped me.
“Bell? What are you doing? You can’t wear jeans! You have to wear this!” She held up an almost frighteningly adorable dress that would look horrible on me. I shook my head in horror.
“Ally, I’m sorry, but I can’t wear dresses. They don’t look good on me! I promise.” I said.
“Bella, please! Please, please, please?” She started to pout, and I was wondering whether she had some sort of hypnotic powers or something. The pout became too much and I sighed, taking the dress from her and slipping it on. Ally tied the ribbons onto my shoulders and I looked into the mirror and felt my eyes widen.
The dress was red patterned and had a ruffle to my knees also. It actually looked good against my pale skin and made my skimpy figure look much better than usual. The French braid that Ally had woven my hair into and the ballet flats that were sitting next to me made the outfit complete. Alice was a natural even when she wasn’t here!
“Wow…I look…” I couldn’t think of anything else to describe it. Ally made a wolf whistle behind me and giggled.
“I’M GORGEOUS AND YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL!!!” She yelled. She grabbed my arm once I put on the shoes and we both walked downstairs. Ally told me to wait at the top of the stairs; and leaned down on the railing.
“Drum roll please! Presenting the adorable girls of the house! Alyson Hartman and Isabella Swan!” We walked in and I managed not to trip as I looked at Charlie and Dan’s smiling faces.
“Finally, I’m getting to know what living in a house with a girl is like.” Charlie said, kissing me on the forehead. Well, I wasn’t exactly the most girliest daughter on the block, I thought.
“You both look stunning. Shall we?” Dan held out both his arms and we put our arms through; linking them, and laughing as I grabbed the keys and we walked out the door.
“We’ll be back by 10, Dad!” I yelled before shutting the door behind me.
As I was driving down to La Push, I thought about how much fun I was having with Ally and Dan. I felt…normal.
Even before I met Edward and his family, I was never linked with anyone else. I never had sleepovers, or gone to the movies with friends, or even had any birthday parties. I always acted too old for my age and no one understood why I liked to be alone. Ally brought out the girl in me, and Dan brought out the young in me. It was like having a normal life with normal friends-- (even though one was a vampire)--. Jake, Edward, or Alice could never make me feel this way.
“Oh my gosh! Look at that! It’s so…mesmerizing!” Ally whispered from beside me. I looked out at the beach as I parked on the edge of the sand where all the other cars where.
The entire coast was covered in lights and sparkles and a huge bonfire was sitting on a low cliff that jutted out into the open sea. People were everywhere as we got out of the truck and walked down to the fire.
“Look! There’s even a karaoke stage!” Ally said excitedly. She was looking around everywhere, obviously scouting for Jake. I looked around too and saw him sitting with the pack in front of the fire on a big blue blanket. I pointed to them and told Ally. She smiled and bit her lip.
Ohmygod. Is it even possible for a guy to look that flipping’ hot? Jacob looked absolutely tantalizing in a white button down shirt and ripped up jeans. His long black hair fell around his face and he kept running his hand through it. It was like looking at a model up close. This is the first time in my life I felt lucky. I can’t believe I get to be in love with the most amazing, perfect, strong, mysterious, car expert, and gorgeous guy! This is the best!
Dan, Bella, and I walked down and Jake saw us and suddenly stood up, grinning. His smile made my insides melt and my knees felt wobbly. I smiled back and he walked over; when he was close enough, I saw that he was holding something behind his back, with both arms.
“Hey Jake.” Bella said from somewhere next to me, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from Jake’s tall figure coming closer and closer. It was pretty dark outside and the fire’s light was illuminating his dark skin in such a glorious way.
“Hey Bells.” Jake said nodding his head at her, ignoring Dan completely. Then he turned to me and I looked up into his eyes and I felt his gaze looking into me; into my very soul. If this wasn’t love, then I don’t know what is.
“Ally…you look breathtaking.” He whispered, stepping closer so we were only a foot apart. I could feel his unnatural heat seething my skin, giving me a tingly feeling down to my toes. He slowly pulled his arms out from behind him, revealing in one hand, a bouquet of roses and in the other a velvet box.
“For you.” He was still whispering, and that made the moment all the more sweeter. I could barely breathe. I’ve never gotten flowers before, let alone roses! And what’s in the velvet box? Why is he giving me presents? Does he really like me that much?
“Wow…thank you so much.” I whispered, unable to say anything else. I held the roses close to me, and smelled their sweet scent. He opened the box for me, and I gasped. Inside was the prettiest thing I had ever seen.
It was a beautiful heart shaped gold pendant with intricate swirls and little jewels. It would be the only piece of jewelry that I had ever owned. It was more special than anything. Ever. I looked up into Jake’s eyes and I felt tears spring in my own.
I tried to blink them away, but that made one of them roll down my face. I was about to wipe it away, but Jake put my hand down and put his hand on my cheek. His touch burned through my skin and I closed my eyes, trying to memorize the feel. I could feel his thumb wiping my tear away, along with all my fears, my broken dreams, and stealing my heart forever.
I opened my eyes and smiled, breathing in deeply. Jake was slightly smiling and his eyes were dancing brightly.
“Do you like it?” He asked.
“Words can’t really describe how much I love it, so I won’t try to explain. Will you put it on me?” I asked. He grinned and nodded.
I turned around and faced the waves crashing into the sand. He saw his arms over my head and the pendent hanging off my neck. I held up my hair with one hand I heard him clip the back of the chain and I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand at his casual touch. After he clipped it, his fingers trailed down my shoulders and he leaned in; suddenly, I could feel his nose skimming on my bare shoulders and I think he was inhaling my skin. I tried to fight down a shiver, but his touch made my spine tingle. I could almost feel him smile against my skin as he straightened up and I turned around to see his smirk.
“Thank you very, very much. It’s unbelievable.” I said. He just nodded and kept smirking. I wanted to ask him why he was smirking like that, but I felt someone tap my shoulder and I saw Bella next to me, grinning.
“Hey Ally, I was just telling you that Dan and I would be over there.” she said, pointing a group of the ‘elders’ who I presumed were telling stories. I nodded and she walked off with Dan; who had his eyes narrowed and was glaring at Jake. Even though Jake was just standing there, smirking at me.
“Hey, you wanna go down for a walk?” he asked, gesturing toward the vast beach.
“Sure, if you promise to tell me why you’re smirkin’ like that.” I said, falling into step with him.
“Oh, it’s just that Bella is so cool. She’s taking your brother away so I could have some time with you-- without his glaring.” He said, taking my hand easily, naturally.
“Oh. Sorry about that, he’s just a little protective. I am his little sister, and I don’t think he would trust you even if you came with a halo and wings.” We both laughed and walked on. We talked for what seemed like days, but was probably an hour and then we decided to go up to the karaoke stage. Hmm, this should be interesting.
I managed to distract Dan for about an hour, listening to some more Quiluete legends. He was very interested in them. I myself thought they were pretty amazing. Billy Black was telling us a legend of ‘the cold woman’ when Ally and Jake walked up, hand in hand and stood next to us. Ally had a dream like smile on her face, and Jake was just staring at her.
“Let’s go to the karaoke stage.” Jake said. We all walked over to a table and sat down, looking at the couple on stage; a small girl and boy, about 10 years old. The crowd was clapping as they finished a sweet song and went off the stage. An older man came on and asked if anyone else wanted to give it a try.
“Ally, why don’t you go?” Dan asked Ally, who sighed. I could tell that she knew Dan was going to say this. She nodded and let go of Jake’s hand; he was grinning with obvious excitement. She walked up to the stage and told the DJ what CD to put in.
“You’re gonna love this, Ally is the best singer. She was in varsity choir and won the state competition last year.” Dan whispered from next to me.
I smiled because he sounded like a proactive parent, and because earlier in the day, when Ally was singing, “girls just wanna have fun” she must have not really been singing her best, she was just yelling and having fun. The music started and Ally was in front of the mic, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath before she started to sing, staring into Jake’s eyes the whole time. Her voice was so beautiful, it tugged at my heart; it sounded like a vampire’s voice, but much more natural, which made it more stunning. She sang a pretty song called “Black Roses Red” by Alana Grace.
She finished the song, and everyone was standing up and cheering and asking for more. I looked at Jake, who was stricken, and staring at Ally. He blinked a couple times and looked at me, his mouth hanging open. I smirked at him, and he stood up, striding over to where the stage was. He held on to Ally hands, and whispered something into her ear that made her blush furiously and stumble off the stage and sit back down next to me.
“He is so unbelievably sweet.” She whispered to me. I smiled and then heard music coming from the stage. I looked up and saw Jake grinning from behind the mike. He was staring at Ally and he gave her a wink. She blushed again and bit her bottom lip.
I saw the rest of the pack brother come and sit at the table next to us, causing all of them and Dan to wrinkle their noses. It was so nice that even though the smell repulsed them, they were trying to get along. Emily was sitting in Sam’s lap and she waved at Ally and I; so we waved back and then looked at the stage. Jake had started to sing, and even though he wasn’t as good as Ally, he was still a lot better than I would have imagined. I guess love makes you better at things. He sang an amazing song called “Your guardian angel” by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
The song ended and the crowd burst into the same whistling, cheering, and shouting as before. Ally was wiping her eyes and smiling. Dan was also appreciatively clapping. Jake looked smug as he came back to the table and received a kiss on the cheek from Ally, a high five from me, and pats on the back from the whole pack.
He got up again and gave a lame excuse of getting drinks when he and Ally walked off, hand in hand once again. Once again, I thought, how cute! I looked at my watch and gave a yelp. It was 10: 05! I had promised to be home at ten! Aaah, time passes quickly when you’re having fun! I looked over at the beach, and decided to give the new lovebirds fifteen minutes before I had to end their night.
Ally’s POV again:
“Thank you for everything, Jake. The roses, the necklace, and the song. It meant more to me than you could ever know.” I said as we walked once again to the beach. He smiled and shrugged his shoulders.
“I just felt like getting them for you. To show you how much you mean to me.” He said. He cupped his hand on my cheek and once again, his heat seared through me. We both instinctively bent in, closer, as if we were magnets attracting to each other. My eyelids drooped and I was about to close them and the distance between us, when I heard crackles coming from above us.
We both looked up at the same time and saw radiant, bright fireworks booming across the black sky. It was so cliché, yet so perfect. We looked back at each other and I put one arm around his neck, pulling him down, a millimeter away from my face.
As we leaned in, I felt his warm lips against mine, and the world seemed to fall away as I closed my eyes. It took me a second and swiftly I felt something inside of me snap, letting go of everything, weaving my other arm onto his neck, my fingers entangling themselves into his long dark hair. I felt his strong arms around my waist, hugging me closer. My heart burst in my chest and my lungs were begging for air, but I couldn’t pull away from him to get any oxygen, he was more important than the need to breathe, than the need to live.
