Bella’s POV:

“EDWARD!” I yelled, jumping up and running toward his outstretched arms. He was back early! He felt so good, cold, and comforting. I wrapped my arms around his neck and stood on my tiptoes, kissing every part of his face I could reach.

“Bells calm down! I’m not going to disappear!” he said, laughing. His laugh strummed my heart and I felt it race as I looked into his now bright golden eyes.

“Happy?” he asked. I nodded furiously and hugged him again, burying my face in his shoulder. He smelled like the forest, mixed with the same scent he always had. He bent towards me and I knew he was breathing mine in as well. I hugged him tightly, probably tightly enough that, were he human, he wouldn’t be able to breathe. Of course, this meant that I was getting my icing all over him.

“So how was it?” I asked, letting go and looking at him. He shrugged.

“Long.” He replied, smiling. He let go of my waist but held my hand, looking at the rest of the people in the now bright kitchen. I looked at them also, and they were all standing stock still, except Jacob, whose arms were shaking; everyone had white icing all over them. Ally was grinning and Dan was as stiff as a board.

“Edward, this is Daniel, and this is Ally.” I said, pointing to each.

“It’s very nice to meet you.” He said, first shaking Dan’s hand, then Ally’s; completely ignoring Jake.

“It’s also quite nice to meet you.” Dan said, now smiling. Suddenly, Alice appeared out of nowhere, drawing gasps from both Ally and me. She was jumping up and down in excitement, and then, suddenly, I couldn’t breathe from the force of her hug.

“Alice! Breaths! Important!” I yelped. She laughed and turned around, facing Dan and Ally. Jake was standing on the other side of the kitchen, against the back door.

“Hi! I’m Alice!” she said, shaking Dan’s hand and then Ally’s.

“Pleasured, ma’am.” Dan said, with his southern gentlemen accent. He reminded me so much of Jasper, it was kind of freaky.

“Hi Alice, I’m Ally!” Ally replied with just as much enthusiasm. I could feel a migraine coming when I thought of Ally’s and Alice’s excitement both in one room. As if one wasn’t enough to handle.

“Hey, how come I didn’t see you guys in my visions? That kind of freaks me out.” Alice said, calming down a little.

“That is quite interesting, Alice…” Edward said, looking thoughtful. “If you don’t mind, we must take you to Carlisle.”

“Of course we don’t mind. Speaking to your family was the reason we came down here in the first place.” Dan said. Edward just smiled. I was curious to know what he was thinking…and what the others were thinking. Finally, Jake spoke up.

“Bells, Ally, I’m going home. Call me. Later.” He said, looking at the both of us and practically running out to the front door and leaving in his rabbit. I sighed; Jake and Edward will never get along. They couldn’t even stand in the same room for more than a couple seconds. I felt like it was entirely my fault.

“So, shall we go?” Edward asked quietly. I could tell Ally was thinking depressing thoughts about Jake’s sudden leave, so Edward was trying to change the subject. Dan and Alice nodded. I held Ally’s hand for reassurance, and she gripped it tightly. She looked a little scared; finally, the girl has some sense. Dan also put his arm around her and then Edward smiled at her.

“No need to be frightened. You’ll never find a more friendlier group of vampires than in the Cullen household.” He said. I nodded and smiled.

“Except Rosalie…let her make the first contact…and don’t talk back to her…and don’t remind her that you’re only human…and—“ Alice was saying, until she was interrupted by Edward.

“Okay, we get it Alice. Rose is not that bad, she’s just a little…insecure. Just stick close, ok?” he said. Ally nodded; I remembered the first time I went to the Cullen mansion. Whoa.

“Yeah, I’ll protect you!” Alice said, giggling and skipping out to the front door with the step that would break any dancer’s heart. Ally laughed and her more natural composure came back to her. We all left the house and I locked the door, walking to Edward’s Volvo. He opened the door for me and I got into the passenger seat. Before I could blink, Alice, Dan, and Edward were in the car. Ally was still getting in.

“Ugh, I’m never gonna get used to this vamp speed thing.” She said, shutting the door.

“Wait until they start driving.” I muttered. Edward and Alice chuckled, bells and tinkles together.

“250 miles per hour, Ally; and of course I wouldn’t mind you asking.” Edward suddenly said. He was smirking and Ally was startled.

“What?” She said, confused.

“You were asking the top speed for the Volvo?” Edward said innocently. It took me a couple moments to get it—he was reading her thoughts.

“No I—oh…yeah sorry, I forgot you could do that.” She said uncomfortably. Edward snickered and I glared him, reaching over and poking his arm. He straightened up, and looked in the rearview mirror.

“I am sorry, Ally, it was a little hard to resist.” He said, trying to keep a straight face.

“It’s alright. It’s just gonna be a little weird…” I turned back and she was shifting awkwardly.

“I’m lucky, huh? He can’t hear me.” I said, winking at her as she giggled. Alice stifled a loud snicker badly and Edward’s face lost all teasing and he glowered at the road. He was still so frustrated that he couldn’t hear my thoughts.

“Here’s the house!” Alice said as we turned down the winding green curve. It looked even prettier during the summer, draped in vines and flowers that grew around the mansion.

“Wow! It’s so beautiful!” Ally said, hopping out of the car and into the field that was the manor’s front yard. The rest of us stepped out, and Alice went over to Ally, explaining how Esme had designed the house herself.

“Well, things happen when you have time on your hands.” A light voice said from the porch. Esme and Carlisle stood there, smiling wisely at us. They made no move to approach Dan and Ally, just as they first did when I came.

“Oh! You must be Dr. and Mrs. Cullen! It’s so good to see you! I’m Ally.” Ally said, walking up the porch and holding out her hand, absolutely all fear gone. First Carlisle shook her hand, then Esme.

“Please call me Esme, it is such a pleasure to meet you.” Esme said, a bright smile touched her soft features.

“Yes, I’m only a doctor when I am at work, other than that, please call me Carlisle.” Carlisle said, chuckling.

“Good afternoon, Carlisle, Esme. We’ve been awaiting you. My name is Daniel.” Dan said, shaking Esme and Carlisle’s hand tentatively.

“I’m sorry for the wait, our cell phones were unfortunately out of range when Kate called us and told us of your trip down. Please come in.” Carlisle said, gesturing inside. We all followed him, but I noticed that when Carlisle mentioned Kate (a part of the Denali Clan) Dan stiffened and his perfect face grimaced. He followed the rest of us inside and we all sat on the sofa. It felt so good to be back at the house…like my home away from home.

I looked at Edward then, and noticed that he was wearing a slight grimace also. What’s going on? I got his attention and raised an eyebrow. He shook his head.

“Dan, I’m so sorry. They…it’s in their nature.” Edward said, turning back to Dan, but with an apologetic look on now.

“What? Oh. Yeah…no, it was ok. Not too bad, just a little…uncomfortable.” Dan replied moving his hair back and looking at the floor. Ally, Carlisle, Esme, Alice and I were all looking questionably at both boys until Emmett and Jasper bounded down the stairs.

“PARTAY! I didn’t know we had guests!” Emmett said. Jasper was just quietly leaning against the wall, as far away as possible, with an apprehensive look on his face.

“Emmett!” Esme hissed evenly. Alice, Ally, and I giggled, until Dan got up and held out his hand cautiously.

“I’m Daniel, and this is my sister Ally, nice to meet you.” He said. Emmett shook his hand vigorously, and then grinned at Ally, stepping back. Jasper sauntered forward; his tall figure moving gracefully, but shaking Dan’s hand just as strongly, tipping his head towards Ally, and then sitting on the arm of Alice’s chair. I looked around, not being able to find the last beautiful addition of the household.

“Where’s Rosalie?” I asked. Suddenly, Rosalie stepped onto the top stair, and slowly—very slowly—glided down the stairs in a perfect debutante posture. Dan automatically stood back up. She wasn’t smiling, but she wasn’t frowning either, her expression was quite critical.

“Speak of the devil.” Alice murmured. She earned a withering look from Rosalie as she descended the last step and came to stand next to Emmett, tossing her golden locks over her shoulder.

“Hey Rose, this is Daniel and Ally.” Emmett said. Daniel smiled and said, “Good Afternoon, ma’am,” to Rosalie. She just nodded and sat next to Emmett on the loveseat.

“So what’s really going on?” Emmett blurted out. Everyone had a reaction. Esme, Alice, and Rosalie made a face and then Jasper, Edward, and Ally laughed. Carlisle and Dan both smiled.

“What? I was just asking! They must be here for a reason!” Emmett said, receiving a smack on the back of his head by Rosalie. “Ow! You know, I should just stop talking.” He continued.

“Best idea you ever had, Emmett.” Edward said, still laughing.

“Actually, we were here for a reason. We needed to join a family, being alone was putting us in danger; but the only ones that had my hunting habits were the Denali Clan and yours. I was just wondering if I could talk to you about it, because things in Alaska…well, they weren’t ideal for me and my sister.” Dan said, speaking mainly to Carlisle.

“Of course, we would love it if you came to live with us. I believe we have many stories to share.” Carlisle said, smiling brightly now. “Perhaps you could join Esme and I in my study?”

“Yes, thank you.” Dan said. They started to go upstairs when Dan threw a meaningful look over his shoulder at Edward, Ally, and me. I saw Edward nod and then Dan left.

“So Bells! How many times did you fall, without Edward there to catch you?” Emmett asked, laughing. I rolled my eyes and of course, blushed.

“I thought you were going to stop talking.” I muttered. He ignored me, and proceeded to grill Ally.

“So, tell me everything.” Emmett asked her. Everyone else also looked towards her, although she didn’t feel uncomfortable with the spotlight. She sighed dramatically.

“Ok, but it’s long and not that exciting.” She said. Everyone nodded and she smiled, getting off the sofa and then sitting in the middle of the floor, cross-legged and innocent.

“So…” She proceeded to tell the same story she told me yesterday, but with a little more enthusiasm, because of the audience, I presume. Emmett was asking questions left and right, getting more and more animated as the story went on. Alice went over and sat next to Ally, and even Rosalie became less critical, and more sympathetic.

“And then you guys came home...” Ally said, finishing her story. Suddenly, Carlisle, Esme, and Dan were sitting on the chairs next to me. I looked and saw that their expressions were calculating.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. Dan sighed, and Esme bit her lip.

“Nothing is wrong. We’re simply trying to figure out a way for this problem to work.” Carlisle said calmly.

“Yes, that might be a problem.” Edward said. Lucky duck, he can just hear what they’re thinking about.

“What problem?” Emmett asked.

“Well, it seems that if Dan and Ally come to live with us, we will have to keep her safe 24/7. She can never get hurt, or cut, for the temptations would be harder for us to resist. We wouldn’t want any harm to come near her, and living in this house might not be too easy.” Carlisle said. I remembered my 18th birthday and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand.

Esme got up and put a motherly arm around Ally’s shoulders. Everyone was quiet, and even Ally wasn’t smiling her usually big and bright smile. Jasper looked sick with guilt; he had the most trouble with his temptations.

“As much as I like being the center of attention, I really don’t want to put you guys out. I can live by myself, don’t worry about me.” Ally said quietly. Dan was shaking his head before she finished the sentence.

“No, me and you will just buy a separate apartment somewhere close to here.” He said.

“Dan! You have to be with them, you can’t be responsible of me forever! You need to be with people like you, I’ll just slow you down.” Ally said. The rest of us were just silently watching the argument between the siblings.

“You’re not slowing me down! I want to be responsible for you! You’re only 16 and you’re my sister!” Dan said.

“I can find someplace! You stay here and stop worrying about me! You’ve already left your first life because of me, don’t miss your second chance!” Ally said, on the verge of tears.

“I’m not going to leave you on the streets! How could you think I would do something like that?” Dan yelled.

“Enough. Ally is not going to live on the streets, and Dan is not going to forget about her. We just need to think of an easier solution that will benefit all of us.” Carlisle said calmly.

“Hey Dan, if you were just born like a month ago, how come your eyes are already gold instead of red?” Emmett asked randomly, probably trying to lighten the tense situation. We all looked at Dan, but he just shrugged.

“I don’t know, I just woke up this way…in fact, my eyes weren’t ever red, or black, they just stay gold all the time.” Dan said.

“Well, that’s quite interesting; I wonder if it’s because of your absolute aversion to blood, although your old blood would have had to come out somehow…or maybe the vampire who bit you drew out all your blood and only left enough to keep you living through the transformation.” Carlisle said thoughtfully. Dan gave a slight shiver, maybe remembering the pain during the transformation.

Edward’s POV:

I just couldn’t stop staring at Bella. Ally and Dan probably thought I was obsessed with her or something. I couldn’t help it! Every second away from her made me want to smash something and now that she was so close to me, I just felt like taking her and kissing her.

Holy crap! I can’t believe how nice everyone is…they all want to help Danny and me and they don’t even know us! I’m always the problem creator. I hate this! I’m putting everyone else in trouble. Ally’s thoughts were saying.

I feel so pitiful. So needy, I mean I’m just sitting here, asking if I could live with them! This is so embarrassing, god, if mom and dad were here… Dan was thinking. I looked at him and shook my head. He looked down.

I’m sorry, Edward. I just…I feel so bad asking you guys for this huge favor; I don’t even have anything to give you. He thought.

“Dan, Ally, please don’t think that way; we’re just happy you’re here. Believe me, I know.” I smiled. Dan and Ally smiled back and slightly relaxed.

Maybe I can live with Jake…Ally suddenly thought.

“No! You can’t! That’s simply too dangerous!” I said. Everyone’s thoughts and eyes were centered on me, trying to figure out the mental conversations we were having.

“Why? He won’t hurt me! I know that.” She said. I think everyone else got the gist of what was going on now.

“You can never be sure. He’s an immature, volatile, werewolf! It’s in his nature to act without thought!” I said.

Edward, why do you care? I’m only causing your family more conflict! You don’t have to be nice to me! Ally thought.

“I want to! You’re already like a sister to me!” I said out loud. I froze; I didn’t mean to say that out loud. Man, this ‘not-keeping-your-feelings-on-the-inside’ thing was happening more and more often.

“What the hell is going on?” Ally and Emmett said at the exact same time.

“Language!” Dan and Esme said at the EXACT same time.

“Now I’m confused.” I said. Suddenly, Ally started laughing hysterically. She lay back on the carpet and seemed to laugh her heart out.

“That…was…FUNNY! Does that…. happen all the time?” She gasped in between laughs. Most of us were looking at her like she was crazy, but then Alice started laughing, followed by Bella, then onto everyone else except Rosalie. Emmett was roaring once again, Dan and Jasper were just chuckling.

Suddenly, my cell phone rang and I pulled it out of my pocket and held it to my ear. Unknown number.

“Hello?”

“Is this Edward?” a deep voice sounded on the other line. Jacob Black.
