It was Rosalie. She was biting her beautiful bottom lip and staring at me under Edward. I looked at her and she was wearing different clothes than before and her hair seemed kind of messed up. Her topaz eyes were anxious and a little confused. I’m sure the confusion was showing on my face too. Edward eyes were flickering between Rosalie and I so fast, that you could barely see them.
“Did I interrupt something?” Rosalie asked softly. It was so interesting to hear her voice without the usual menace and hate. I was almost too distracted to even answer. I tried to push Edward’s shoulders, but he wouldn’t budge.
“Oh, um, no. We were just…Edward get off me!” I pushed harder and he reluctantly got up and stood between Rosalie and me as if she was going to attack any minute.
“I was just wondering if I could take a drive with you?” She asked looking around Edward’s shoulder.
“Me?” I asked. I couldn’t believe it. After 2 years of hate, she was asking to take a drive with me? Was she going to drive over a cliff? It wouldn’t kill her, but it would kill me…
“Yes. In private, if you don’t mind, Edward?” she looked at Edward. He slowly backed off and nodded. I guess he was hearing her thoughts she wasn’t a potential threat.
“Good…coming, Bella?” She smiled and was already at the door and about to go when she did the most shocking thing I could even think of. She reached out, grabbed my hand, and held it.
My jaw dropped and I looked at Edward. He was smiling and his eyes were wide with surprise too.
I didn’t have time to do express my confusion, because Rosalie was already pulling me through the house and down the stairs.
As we were descending the stairs, I caught my foot in the railing and predictably tripped.
Before I hit the ground, a white, strong arm encircled my waist and I heard a musical chuckle behind me. I straightened myself and looked back.
Can I just say something? Rosalie is beautiful…she is as I said before: “an incarnation of pure beauty”. But when she was laughing (a non-evil laugh) she was strikingly dazzling.
“Wow, Emmett was right, you are funny when you fall.” She whispered in my ear. Her breath was kind of like Alice’s. It made me love vampires.
“Hey, I try.” I quietly replied, smiled and started walking down the stairs. She was still holding my hand and when we got to the very bottom, I noticed that the living room was spotless once again, as if no paint and no screaming happened there. Esme must be a magician…
Rosalie pulled me along to the front door and we started to walk out the door, when she stopped and amazingly started to giggle even louder than before.
“What?” I asked.
“I was so anxious, that I forgot you were almost naked!” I felt the heat rise in my cheeks and I looked down. I was still wearing Edward’s white towel. Suddenly, a flash of black and white zoomed past me and I blinked.
When I turned to the side, Alice was standing there with a cottony white robe and matching slippers. She was smiling and practically jumping up and down again. I looked at Rosalie and she rolled her eyes and smiled back.
I grabbed the robe, put it on and wrapped the other towel around my hair in a twist. After slipping into the slippers, Rosalie and I finally made it outside. It was summertime so it wasn’t cold, but of course, Forks was still a little windy.
We were both walking around the house and I finally understood where she was taking me. The garage in the back holding all of the Cullen cars.
Rosalie unlocked the door and we walked past all the other cars (which were a bit eye-catching and head-turning, if you catch my drift.)
When we got into Rosalie’s red convertible, she smoothed out of the garage driveway and started to drive down the road and I noticed that Rosalie was a much better driver than Edward and Alice. She liked to keep to a better speed limit even though it was still too fast for me.
I didn’t know if I should say anything. I looked over at her and she was just staring at the road, but her eyes were unfocused, as if she wasn’t really paying attention. I was about to ask her where she was taking me, but the car came to a sudden halt, and I looked out.
We were on a low bridge of the Calawah River. It was very low, and I hadn’t been there before.
She took the key out of the ignition and opened her car door. I opened mine too, and I walked out onto the bridge, careful not to trip again.
She slowly slipped out of her shoes and proceeded to sit over the side of the bridge, with her toes in the creek under. She turned her head to look at me and smiled, patting the space on the right of her. I gingerly stepped out of the slippers, sat next to her, and dipped my toes in the water also.
It was cool and refreshing, but it didn’t relax my nerves. I waited for her to start. She took a deep breath and looked at me.
“Bella, I know that I am the only one in my family who didn’t like you. I know that everyone thinks I am just malicious and tenacious. I…I don’t want to admit this, but they’re right. I was jealous of you. I want to be human like you, and when you were asking to be turned into something like us, I was freaked out. I could not believe you were willing to give up you’re life for such a demeaning existence. I was just angry and I’m sorry, really truly sorry. The way you went and saved my brother from such a terrible fate was amazing, and I know he forgave me but I still feel guilty that it was my fault he ended up there, and I am really happy you forgave me, even though I was being such a bitch.” She paused, gauging my reaction. I had been keeping my face blank on purpose, but now a smile was creeping into my lips.
“Of course I forgave you, Rosalie. I know you that you did what you did because you care about Edward. And all I wanted was a little acceptance from you too.” I said slowly, she smiled and patted my hand.
“I finally came around, didn’t I? I’m excited now; I get to have another sister! We can go shopping without Alice, because guess what?” she asked. Her eyes turned excited and I raised an eyebrow.
“What?” I asked slowly.
“I have a better sense of style, and you’re wardrobe has been annoying me to the fullest.” I bit back my groan and smiled.
“That’s great Rosalie, I can’t wait.” I really was not so happy about this but I didn’t want to disappoint her just yet. And who knows? She might really be less…crazy than Alice.
“Okay, let’s go!” I blinked.
“Now?” I gasped. It was night! Who knows how late it really was?
“Yes! There are some 24 hour shops in Seattle, it will only take us a couple of hours to get there, buy stuff, and come back!” Maybe she was as crazy as Alice.
“Umm…I’m pretty tired, today was a HUGE, hectic, day. Could you wait until tomorrow?” Her face fell a little, but she was still smiling.
“Oh yeah, I forgot that you need to sleep. Let’s go tomorrow…Hey Bella, can I ask you something?” she was suddenly very indecisive, and I nodded my head.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Do you think I’m pretty?” my jaw dropped. I must be dreaming…the most beautiful woman I had ever met was asking me if I thought she was pretty.
“Rosalie, you are without a doubt the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my life.” Her smile was so big and her teeth were glimmering in the moonlight.
“Thank you!” she said. She stood up in a blindingly fast movement and helped me up too. We both put on our shoes and were about to get into the car when she stopped and started growling.
It was so scary, that the hairs on the back of neck stood up and a shiver shot down my spine. She was looking into the forest and I guess that she heard something with her super sonic hearing.
I was looking at her when she crouched down and stepped in front of me, still growling. I realized that she was taking a stance that protected me from the forest.
My heart started beating too fast, and I heard a rustle in the trees. I was about to ask her what it was, when something stepped out of the forest and my heart skipped a beat.
