My long dead heart was suddenly rocketed into motion as he entered the room. Upon walking in, he scanned for the nearest seat and found that the only one was next to me. I pretended to be engrossed in my novel as he walked over and gracefully sat down in the seat next me. Can you say “major deja-vu”?

He turned to me and out of the corner of my eye I could see the puzzled expression on his face as he inhaled my scent that had once captivated him. But, never the less, he extended his hand to me and with that velvety voice said, “Good morning. My name is Edward Cullen.” The sense of deja-vu was so strong that I felt compelled to reply the way I had 40 years ago. But instead, I looked up from my book and taking his hand, I replied “Annabel Cain.” I added a thick Italian accent because the Cain’s were pretending to be transfers from Italy. I studied his face for expressions as my cool hand touched his before going back to my book.

“A pleasure,” he said as I went back down to my book, but his eyes never left my face. After several moments of him not blinking but intently staring at me, I put down my book with a frustrated sigh, and locked his beautiful topaz eyes with mine, which I knew were slate gray from anger, and I asked him, “May I help you?”

“It’s just that…” he started. When he didn’t finish, I rolled my eyes and made a move as if I was going to pick back up my book and he quickly finished “Its just that I feel like I know you…from either a past life or, I don’t know. But you’re so familiar.” I felt a sudden sense of worry, as if he may have figured out who I was. But at that moment I didn’t know whether or not that was a bad thing. I could tell he was beginning to ask me something else but before he had time to get the words out, the bell rang and I grabbed my bag before making a dash for the door.

Foreign language was next and since I had mastered all the languages they offered here, I was using that as a free period. So from homeroom, I went into the library, where instead of studying, I read my beloved Wuthering Heights, but not even Heathcliff and Cathy’s romance could shake Edward’s face from my photographic memory. I was so hopelessly lost inside my book that I didn’t even hear him come up behind me. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I jumped halfway out of my skin and out of my chair. My book went clattering to the floor and, momentarily forgetting where we were, I jumped up and grabbed Edward by the front of his shirt and lifted him a good 4-5 inches off the floor. “What the hell were you thinking?” I hissed in his face as I brought it within an inch of mine before dropping him back to the floor.

“I was seeing if you were what I thought you were.” He was smiling and for the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why.

“And am I?” I picked up my book and turned back to face him. Although I was still a good 5 inches shorter even with my heels, I looked him straight in the eye and you could almost visibly see him flinch away from my piercing gaze.

“Honestly, you’re nothing I expected, Bella.” He met my stare with a level gaze and it finally hit me what he had just said.

“I beg your pardon? What did you just call me?” I had defiantly decided that my true identity was defiantly something I didn’t want him to know and if he had figured it out...

“What? Don’t tell me you’ve never been called Bella before?” He looked astounded at that fact.

“No, I haven’t. And for your information, my name is Annabel not Annabella. I don’t know where you got Bella from.”

“But you look so much like a Bella. I had one, once. But…I made a mistake. And she is no longer my Bella. I don’t even know where she is. For all I know she could be dead…or married to another guy.” He looked so distressed talking about me that it was sad. Did he feel guilty for leaving me, or…what?

I needed more info than this, so I walked forward and tilted his chin so that his eyes met mine again. “She was human, wasn’t she?” I said softly. He nodded and I knew that he would be crying if it was possible. “Why did you leave her?” There. I had asked the big question.

“Why should I tell you?” his sadness has turned into anger.

“Because you apparently need to tell someone and I’m as good as anyone.” I was still talking softly, hoping not to scare him away because I needed to know why he sent me through those first 20 years of agony.

“I lied to her.” He was talking so quietly, it was almost impossible for even my vampire hearing to catch. He took in several shaky breaths before continuing. “I told her I didn’t love her anymore and that was a lie. I…I also told her that I didn’t want her anymore…and that was also a lie. I spent the last 40 years wallowing for her…I even tried to find her about 20 years ago, but she wasn’t in Forks. Her father had died, and the house was empty…I didn’t know what else to do…so…so I tried to go to the Volturi.” I took a sharp breath. “But my siblings stopped me. They actually barricaded me down until I came to my senses. And then when we were sure that everyone here that would remember us would be gone, we came back to Forks.” He looked up at me as a signal that his story was done.

”Wow,” I breathed.

“And what about you?” he asked. , “You have to have some story behind you.”

“I do,” I admitted. “But its not one you want to hear.”

He laughed. “Oh come on! That’s not fair! I just poured my entire love life out for you, and you have to tell me something!”

“Just trust me on this, Edward; you don’t want to know what I’ve been doing with my life.” I looked him with a level stare. “My life was way worse than yours was; let’s just leave it at that, okay?” I turned around and flipped my black and blue hair over my shoulder as I gathered up my bag and book. I turned to face him. “Goodbye, Edward.” I turned and walked out the library just as the bell rang.

Biology was next and I walked in as soon as the tardy bell rang; and imagine my surprise when Edward walked in right behind me. By force, we took the last two empty seats in the back of the room; exactly where he and I had sat 40 years ago. Opening up my binder, I took out a blank sheet of notebook paper, and at the top I wrote, “Do you really want to know?” and I tipped the paper so Edward could see it. He followed my example and took out a sheet of paper and answered, “Yes” on the first line.

I brought the paper back to me and I started by writing, “My vampire boyfriend left me 40 years ago.” And then before waiting to see his reaction, I went to the next line and wrote, “I became so depressed I couldn’t eat and after being in the hospital several times for anorexia I realized that I had to be strong for my father and that I still wanted to live. The year before I was supposed to go to college I went back to his house and I wandered around the woods near his house, crying, when she found me. ‘She’ was a vampire that had been hunting me for a while after we killed her mate. She was the one who bit me.” I really wanted to stop here, but once I had started, it was hard to stop. “When I woke up I was in the Cain household. Agnes, or Aggie as we call her, and Eric were my ‘parents’ and Stephen, Kara, and John were my siblings. About 4 years later, I realized that I could change my appearance at will. The Cain’s loved to travel. I have been to every country in Europe and after we go through school one more time, we are going to finish off Asia.” I gave him the paper and waited to see what his response was. It was several minutes before he put down my paper and picked up his own.

“Bella?” he wrote.

“Bella’s gone. I’ve been Annabel for the past 40 years.”

“Leave with me, right now, we really need to talk. The door’s open and we can make a run for it without anyone seeing. Please.” I turned to look at the door and moved to put everything in my bag and then gently putting it over my shoulder and nodding to him. Under the table, he held one finger, than two, and at three we both ran as fast as we could out the double doors and into the parking lot.

“So, Edward, where do you want to go?”

“Our meadow, if you don’t mind. It seems to me that that would be the appropriate place.” I nodded to him and hiked my bag higher on my back before taking off at high speed down the highway toward our meadow. I arrived and it took my breath away as it had that first time he showed it to me. It hadn’t changed in 40 years and that made it even more special. I took me a moment to realize that I had made it here before he had and that put a smile on my face that lasted until he got there several seconds later.

When he arrived, the first thing he did was ask me one more time, “You really can change you appearance.” I nodded. “Well…can you change back into my Bella, one more time?” I nodded again, even though I really didn’t want to. I closed my eyes and pictured my plain-Jane brown hair and I felt the itching in my scalp begin. I then moved down to focus on my face, turning my eyes back into brown and I could feel my cheek bones begin to become more full as my face returned back to its heart-shaped form. I held out my arms and could feel them become more rounded and less angular than the model thinness I had them at. I winced as I thought about doing my legs as I remembered the first time I had changed them. I also pictured them becoming more round and shorter. Almost at once they buckled and I let out a small cry of pain as the bones in my legs started to shrink back to their normal height. I had tried to make myself taller and I only achieved one inch, but I wasn’t accustomed to the crunching sound of bones that made me sick to my stomach.

When the pain subsided, I attempted to get up and I had to brace myself against a tree. “Wow,” I whispered. “I haven’t done a full body change in 36 years!” And for the first I looked up at him and caught him staring at me.

“Bella?” He asked. His eyes took me in like he didn’t really believe that I was actually standing in font of him. “Bella I am so sorry. I-I didn’t really mean everything---”

“Edward”, I interrupted, “it’s too late.” I was starting to get angry at the fact that he thought that if he just apologized several hundred times it would make everything okay! “You don’t understand everything you put me through! You don’t understand that Charlie almost put me permanently hospitalized! I don’t know what the hell you think you’re doing back here in Forks, but I thoroughly suggest that you leave. If Alice is still in town, I would like to see her, but otherwise, GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!” I sat on the nearest piece of grass that wasn’t covered with dirt and I spread out my arms and legs to begin my transformation. This time, I started with my legs and moved upward, crying out as my legs stretched and the roundness left, leaving me with legs as thin as ones you would see on the cover of Vogue. My stomach tightened and the extra fat deteriorated; my breasts became more rounded and perfect as my arms became long and very thin. My face tightened and my hairline was pushed back one inch while my brown hair turned raven black and the blue ends turned into blue highlights running in random streaks through my hair.

I stood up and looked at Edward one more time, who was staring with his mouth open. “Did you know that Charlie died thinking that I was kidnapped and more than likely killed? I had to change my appearance as soon as I got my power so the police wouldn’t start asking questions. Just think Edward, just think about what you’re ‘leaving for my own good’ did to me.” I left him pondering my words as I turned on my heel and was running out of the forest. I wasn’t as fast as I usually am because my legs were still sore, and Edward easily caught up with me and catching me by my waist he spun me to face him. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” I screamed and I shoved him against the nearest tree but he wouldn’t let go and he took me with him. “LET ME GO!” I was screaming and hollering as much as I could while squirming but Edward wouldn’t remove his hands from around my waist.

“Bella just wait,” he said when I stopped to take a breath from one of my screaming rants.

“What?” I was ready to take out something and since he was the only closest thing I was literally this close to hitting him upside the head, hard.

“I want to take you to see the rest of the family. You did say you would like that…didn’t you”

“Edward, the safest thing you could do right now, is let me go. I am on the verge of hysterics and you are the nearest hard object for which I could hit.”

“Lovely. We’ll be at the house in a moment.” And he started to run.

“EDWARD!” I screamed as I hurtled my fist straight at his forehead, causing his entire body to shift backward a few feet.

“Damn, Bella! You know how to land a punch!”

While he was recovering, I leaned forward to whisper in his ear, “I don’t care how many times you call me ‘Bella’ but like I told you, Bella is gone. I haven’t been her in over 40 years, and I never will be again. So whatever fantasies you have about us getting back together again, drop them, because they are never going to happen. The chances of you and Annabel getting together are even slimmer, so don’t even try. I have a family that will protect me and respect my wishes, and trust me; you don’t want to get tangled up with them.” I think I shocked him because he let his arm slack a little against my waist and before he had time to tighten it again, I swung my leg behind his and his knees buckled to the ground. This time, his arm fully came off and I started to sprint away.
