"Jake? Is that you?" A girl with long brunette hair and big brown eyes said. "Bella? What are you doing here?" He asked when he recognized the girl. "I left school early. Edward left with the rest of the guys to go hunting so I thought I'd come down here to see you," she explained glancing curiously at me once in a while. I looked up at Jake's face to see what he was going to say in response and saw that his eyes looked pained and his mouth was set in a bitter, hard line. "Yeah, 'cause your bloodsucker won't let you see me," he said without emotion. Then he turned to me. "Bella's been dating this vampire, and he thinks that I'm dangerous. Heh, at least she's not in danger of me sucking her dry." His hands were balled into massive fists and were shaking uncontrollably. His eyes were pleading with me, but for what I wasn't quite sure. All I knew was that it was completely and totally idiotic to date a vampire. Honestly, she has to be a dunce not to realize this. "Why would you date a vampire?" I asked her. "Who are you to ask me that?" she spat at me. I took a step back and quick, on- the-spot anger grew in me that was completely out of character. "Hey! Don't you EVER talk to her like that!" Jacob instantly defended me and my heart grew in my chest and I smiled proudly. "Why not? She's sticking her nose in where it doesn't belong." "She needs to know about this too, Bella. Alli is a part of this too now." "How?" "That's for me to know, and you to find out. Like it or not, she's here right now. Either you apologize and get along with her, or I can't be your friend anymore." Aww, he was willing to give up a friend for me. I wanted to cry. "Jake, what the hell is going on with you. You just met this girl. Why are you acting like that?" "Like I said, that is for me to know, and you to find out. You're not stupid, you figure it out." "You… Like Sam?" He nodded without a verbal response and she took a minute to process what she finally figured out. "Oh, I… I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you… you. I'm really sorry," she stuttered out as she turned to run back the opposite way with tears in her eyes. "Hey, you okay?" Jake asked as he turned around and saw me looking confused. "Yeah, I'm fine. Is she okay?" "I don't know. I guess I'll find out later, won't I? Come on, let's go to the garage. It's starting to rain," he said gazing adoringly down at me. I hadn't even noticed the large drops beginning to fall until one collided with my nose. Jacob chuckled as he wiped the water from my now wet nose. As we entered the garage from the now down pouring rain, we were laughing hysterically at our now drenched state. He pulled a chair over for me to sit in and said," Here, let me go find a dry shirt. Do you mind if it's one of mine? That's all I got here…" I smiled at his nervous and embarrassed expression. "I don't mind wearing your shirt. It's okay, promise." His eyes softened, and he turned to disappear behind a few masses of what I would guess to be car parts. A few minutes later he returned with a black, long sleeved, button up shirt. "Best one I could find. My dad makes me wear a shirt down here, but I don't like working with one on. It's just uncomfortable," he said as he handed me his shirt. I smiled gently and replied," Thanks. Where do I change?" I glanced around curiously. There weren't many places that would be suitable for me taking my shirt off behind. "I, uh, I don't know. You could go behind the Rabbit and I'll turn around if you want." "That'll work, just no peeking," I joked as I walked over to the 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit. "Sure, sure." I smiled at his response, making a mental note that this may be an automatic answer. "Nice car. Vintage 1986 Volkswagen Rabbit. My friend use to collect model cars and made it a point to teach me every make, model, and year," I said as I stripped off my soaked shirt. I glanced back to see if Jacob was peeking and when I turned back around, my face got beet red. I have no shirt on in the same room as a completely gorgeous guy. "Okay, I'm done. Go ahead and look. Where should I put this?" I held up my wet shirt. "You can hang it up on the coatrach. It's just a few feet away to the left. See it?" I nodded and quickly took the few steps needed. "So when did you first phase?" "Umm… Around three weeks ago. It was right before my dad died. He was full Quileute and he knew all of the legends. He was on his deathbed when I told him what happened, but he would only tell me to come here. Something about the resources I needed was here," I told him. He nodded, processing the information I had just given him. "I'm sorry 'bout your dad. My mom was killed when I was younger, so I know how you feel." His face was somber, but his eyes were angered. "My mom died before I was born, so I guess it doesn't hurt so much that I never knew her." "So you don't have anyone. I'm so sorry. I… I know I take having my dad for granted. It wouldn't take much for him to be gone, too." I gave him a sad smile expressing my sympathy. "Anyway, why did this happen to me? I was living in Texas, not here." "Location has nada to do with it. My best guess is that there was a bloodsucker or two nearby and their presence triggered the wolf thing." His absolutely beautiful eyes stared into mine and I found it hard to concentrate on what he was saying. His deep, husky voice gave me goosebumps. What the hell is wrong with me? Why am I feeling like this? I let that sink in before I said," Tell me about being a wolf." He smiled dryly. "Well, I personally think of it as a hugely annoying pain in the ass, but it can be pretty cool. The whole pack can read each other's minds. Uhmm… oh! We don't age as long as we phase according to the legends. So, we could live for centuries or longer. We're pretty damn fast, and the moon doesn't affect us. We are not here to attack the people, we are here to protect them from our natural enemy. The vampires. We have super eyesight and hearing and smell. We get to be the size of a small horse, which is pretty big. That's pretty much it… Oh yeah, we Imprint." His smile changed at the end. It became so soft and intimate that I blushed harder than ever before. I smiled back and his eyes melted," Awesome. Who would be in charge? Since we're wolves, don't we have like an Alpha type guy?" His laughed and answered ," Sam." I couldn't quite understand what was wrong with the expression on his face. It was more or less sarcastic and admiration. "Sam Ulley? Wonderful." His expression changed from confusing to confused. "Yeah, what do you mean 'wonderful'?" "I'm sure he has a beautiful first impression of me. I was a total bitch to him earlier and now he's the one who orders me around." "Don't worry. I won't let him work ya too hard," Jake said with a goofy grin. Then he surprised me by saying," I could be Alpha if I wanted, but I don't." "Really? Why not?" He shrugged and replied as he walked over to lean beside me against the car. "Yeah, but I just don't want to. I'm not good at making the best decisions regarding people's lives. The last wolf pack leader was Ephraim Black, one of my ancestors. Therefore, it is my birth right to be Alpha, but I don't want that responsibility. My dad wants me to finish school before doing anything like that. I'm not even sure if I'll finish school. I'm not doing to great as it is. Besides, Sam is champ at being an ass." We both laughed at the last part.
