Bella POV

I stayed overnight in my room, which was awkwardly placed next to Edward’s, because the best time to catch fish was early morning. Part of me hated staying over because it was embarrassing to know that everyone in the house knew when I was going to the bathroom or my other bodily functions. I resorted to turning on the faucet when I had to pee, although I was sure every knew exactly what was happening anyway.

After my morning shower and putting on a thick heather grey thermal long-sleeved shirt, a pair of khaki cargo pants and a pair of tennis shoes, I went down stairs and found breakfast waiting for me.

“I hope you don’t mind,” Edward began, “but I made breakfast this morning.”

“Not at all. Thank you.”

“I’m going to go grab the gear and let you eat. I’ll meet you back here in a few minutes.”

“Ok,” I smiled.

I had finished the scrambled eggs, bacon, and orange juice by the time he got back. He carried both poles, the tackle box, and had two chairs slung over his arms as we walked the almost mile to the lake. I carried the bait and a cooler filled with food and drinks in case the mood hit me. He also gave me a bottle of sun block spf50 so my face wouldn’t burn.

Once we reached the lake he got us set up and baited my hook as I lathered sun block on my face. We casted our lines then took our seats waiting for the fish to take the bait. A slight breeze came through and caused the hair on my arms to rise and me to shiver.

“Hold his please,” he said giving me his pole. He took off his jacket, laid it in my lap, and took the poles careful not to tangle them. Our hands grazed each other briefly and caused an electric shock through my body. I slipped his jacket on and took my pole back from him, again causing a slight shock.

“What, did you hear the hair in my arms stand up?”

“No, but I did hear the slight chatter of your teeth.”

“Well thank you for being such a gentleman.”

“You are very welcome. I couldn’t have my date freeze on our first day, could I?”

“I guess not.”

Suddenly there was a tug on my line and our attention was pulled from each other.

“Bella, pull back slightly on your pole.”

I did.

“Good, it’s taught. Now start to reel it in slowly.

I started to rotate the dial on the pole and bring my catch in closer to me.

“You’re doing great,” he commented as I looked over at him briefly. “Do you want some help,” he asked as I started to struggle bringing it in. It was getting really heavy.

“No, I want to do this myself,” I said moving a few steps closer to the lake for leverage and continuing to reel my fish in.

I took one step closer and parted my feet widely, only my left foot rested on an odd-shaped rock. My catch started to pull harder so I rotated the dial faster while bearing my weight down on the balls of my feet. That was a mistake. The rock that was under my right foot moved, my pole was yanked out of my hands and I was flying forward into the lake. I was already in the water face first by the time Edward caught me and pulled me back. He had grabbed the back of my shirt before I was totally submerged in the water, but my front half was soaked.

“Emmett’s right, things are always more exciting with you around,” he chuckled as I rung my hair and his jacket. “I should have caught you sooner, I’m sorry.”

“It’s no big deal. It’s just water.”

“But look at you, you are soaked. You look like a drowned cat,” he joked

“It’s not like I’m the Wicked Witch of the West and will melt. But you are some mythical creature, so I wonder…”

“What do you wonder,” he asked as I kicked off my shoes and socks and jumped a shallow part of the lake. My intention was to jump in and splash him with water, but that’s not what happened.

Mid-air I heard, “Bella, you don’t want to do that!”

“AHHHHH,” I screamed jumping out of the water and back on land. “What the hell was that!?”

“I tried to tell you that you didn’t want to do that. Jumped on a snake and it bit you.”

“That’s why it was so soft and slippery when I landed,” I said hobbling over to my hair to examine my foot.

Edward was already kneeling at the bottom of my foot where it bit me. “It looks ok. It was just a garden snake, non-poisonous.” I couldn’t help but think about the irony that the thing with fangs that bites me is non-venomous-even if Edward didn’t have fangs. “Are you in any pain?”

“It throbs. I think I screamed out of shock more than pain.”

“Well, let’s get you back to the house so you can get some dry clothes and Carlisle can look at that just in case,” he said standing up and holding out his hand to help me up. I stood up and was ok until I took a step.”

“Damn, that hurts!”

“What? What is it, love?”

“When I put pressure on the bottom of my foot pain shoots through it.”

“It’s almost a mile back to the house. It would be faster, and less painful, if I carry you. Would you be ok with that?”

I started to think about that, but in reality what choice did I have? “I’m ok with it as long as you don’t drop me.”

He scooped me into his arms saying, “I’ll try not to.”

We started to walk toward the house when it happened. The sun broke through a small hole in the clouds. The rays hit his face in a fashion that allowed me to look up at him and see his beautiful skin sparkle as well as look into his honey-colored eyes.

“Stop,” I whispered.

“Are you ok? Are you in pain,” he asked looking at me frantically.

“No, it’s the sun.”

His expression relaxed as he watched my reaction. My eyes filled with his beauty as they gazed out at him. I pulled my hand up and grazed my finger along his cheek. I was reminded of the absolute beauty he possessed. As my fingers trailed down his cheek, his sparkle dulled just slightly under them as I blocked the sun’s path. I flashed back to the first time I saw him sparkle like this, the times he sparkled in the meadow and in my room when I would wake up to the sun breaking through the window and illuminating his skin.

I was suddenly overwhelmed with a reminder of the pure love we had for each other. Thoughts bombarded my mind about how I would do anything, even sacrifice my own happiness and my own life, for him as long as it meant he was safe and happy helped me realize why he left. Although it was done in the worst possible way, it was done out of love; done to make sure that my life went on, that I lived and that my happiness and voice in the world existed. I felt the hole in my heart closing as it was now replaced with eternal, irreversible love. In that moment, in that one, singular second, I forgave him.

Without thinking about it, I grabbed the shoulder of his shirt with my left hand, put my right hand around his neck, raised myself up out of his arms and smashed my lips onto his. He inhaled and made a made a fist around my waist with his right hand and pulled me closer into his body. His left hand was in my hair at the back of my skull holding my lips in place as he ravaged them. He sucked on my bottom lip, licked it, nibbled on it slightly, intertwined his tongue with mine, growled and moaned before pulling back to allow me to breathe again. He placed his forehead on mine for a minute while I regained my composure and then came in for a sweet, chaste kiss. He pulled back and watched the blood race to my cheek to warm up the spots his fingertips had just touched. He smiled, crookedly, at my body’s response.

“We should get you into the house. You’re shivering.” I nodded in agreement.

He ran the remainder of the way back to the house. When I could finally recognize it a thought hit me and I looked up at Edward with wide eyes.

“Please don’t tell Emmett about the snake! There was this thing about a cobra pit and he’ll never let me live it down.”

“I know, but um, it’s too late for that,” he said trying to hide his laughter.

“Oh no. Alice?”

“Yep, and Emmett’s ready to give you hell.”
