Jacob walked quietly down La Push Beach, his hands stuffed deep into his jean pockets. He ignored the bitter wind on his face. It was halfway through October, close to Halloween. He still hadn't decided what exactly he was going to do for Halloween. Nessie had already decided to trick-or-treat with some friends. Apparently she had got too old for Jacob to take her trick or treating around Forks and La Push. It was a shame, really. He had always enjoyed watching her face light up whenever she got another hand full of candy.
But he knew she would grow up eventually. He had to face it. She was going to turn seventeen sometime or another. But maybe that was how it should be. Now he could finally be with her, romantically. He didn't have to mask his true feelings for her. He could finally show her that he honestly loved her as more than a friend, as more than a best friend. But as a partner for life. The love of his life. And hopefully, she would accept that, and return his feelings. After all, he imprinted on her years ago. There was no way around how he felt. How he had to feel. He couldn't change his love for her. All he could hope for was that she would feel the same way, somehow.
"Jake!" someone called from behind him. He turned around, and saw Nessie running towards him, her long dark brown hair trailing behind her. He grinned. He was always happy to see her. Always happy to see the true love of his life.
"Ness!" he said, hugging her tightly. He wondered how she could never notice how much his actions reflected his true feelings.
"Where have you been? I haven't seen you in days!" she said as he released her.
"I...uhm...I was busy," Jacob said, rubbing the back of his neck. He had been out with the pack every night this week. He had been so busy sleeping all day he had never even thought of visiting Nessie and the rest of the Cullens in Forks.
"Oh...Well, you should stop by later today, to ya know...Hang out. We've all really missed you," she said, looking up at Jacob.
He raised his eyebrows. "Everyone?" he asked. None of the Cullens had ever seemed particularly fond of Jacob. Except maybe Bella. But even she had hated him for a period of time. He sighed. "Yeah, I'll come by later."
She beamed at him, obviously happy for his reluctant response.
"Thanks, Jake," she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging him again. He closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around her waist. He smiled a little. He could stay in this moment forever. But, eventually, he had to release her. She smiled at him again. She had a glorious smile, one that could melt his heart. One that he got sucked into everytime her looked at it. It was beautiful, just like every other thing about Nessie.
"I'll see you later, right?" she asked.
"Yeah, later," he said, smiling a little.
"Okay, see you then," she said, turning around and skipping away happily.
Once she was out of sight, once she had disappeared into the trees, Jacob whispered to himself, "I love you."
