Alice POV

"Don't you see? I was wrong, Jasper. I never saw Edward change her. I just assumed..."

********************

We walked into the dining room. The long double-pedestal mahogany table and Queen Anne chairs were merely props for the human charade. Occasionally, however, these props were put to good use as a conference table of sorts.

Carlisle sat in his usual spot at the head of the table. Esme sat beside him on his right with Rose and Emmett seated next to her. Jasper and I took our places to the left of Carlisle.

Once we were seated, Carlisle spoke, "Alice, you called this meeting. The floor is yours."

Before I could speak, I looked into Esme's eyes across from me. They were filled with the light of hope. I didn't have to be a mind reader to know what she was thinking. She thought I was going to say Edward and Bella were coming home and we had to prepare for a newborn in the house. I was going to break her heart all over again.

Jasper could sense my sadness and squeezed my hand under the table, encouraging me to begin.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I misinterpreted the vision."

I looked around at all of their faces and knew Jasper could feel their confusion. Then I had a vision of Carlisle and Esme alone in their room. His arms were wrapped around her as she sobbed tearlessly into his chest.

"Edward's not coming back," she whispered, understanding. The ray of light in her eyes faded to the darkness of despair.

"That sucks." Whack. Rosalie smacked Emmett across the back of his head. I don't think that I was the only one to see that coming.

"I'm so sorry, Esme. When I saw Bella wake up from her transformation with crimson eyes, I just assumed it was Edward. I never saw who changed her."

"It's not your fault, Alice," Carlisle said. "We all jumped to the same conclusion. We believed what we wanted to believe. I suppose you saw something that made you question our assumption?"

"Yes," I answered. "I saw Bella being killed by some vampire I never met before. He had cropped black hair and was at least as big as Emmett. But he quickly changed his mind, because the vision immediately shifted. And I saw the same thing that I saw last time. Bella was lying on a hospital bed in a dark room. Her eyelids flew open revealing blood red irises."

"What are we doing sitting around here talking about it for? I say we find this brute and rip him apart before he can get his filthy hands on my little sister!" That's Emmett, always eager for a fight.

I shook my head. "It's too late, Emmett. In three days, Bella will be like us."

"Well, It looks like the human finally got what she wanted," Rosalie sneered. Jasper flooded me with waves of calm to stop me from flying at her.

"Rose," Emmett pleaded, placing his hand on her shoulder. She slapped it away and stood up.

"What?! It's not like it isn't true! At least now, Edward can get over his stupid little human crush and come home."

"That's enough, Rosalie," Carlisle chastised.

"What do we do now?" Jasper asked, looking at Carlisle.

"I still say we destroy this beast and bring Bella home. She is family. She belongs with us," Emmett interjected.

"We have to tell Edward," Esme whispered. You could hear the worry in her voice.

"Esme is right. Edward needs to know," Carlisle agreed. "Alice, can you try to look ahead to see his reaction?" We all knew it wouldn't be pretty.

Edward left to keep Bella safe. He felt our presence in her life was constantly putting her in danger. Emmett and I tried to convince him that there was another way - a better way - but he vehemently refused to risk her soul. His separation from Bella is causing him to live in extreme agony; and our forced separation from both of them is also very painful, as well as a source of turmoil within the family. And it has all been for nothing. Bella was obviously not safe without us - I honestly don't know what he was thinking, like Bella could ever be safe. And her soul, if Edward is correct in his assumption, which I am not one hundred percent sure that he is, is also lost.

I nodded, and then closed my eyes to concentrate on Edward's future. I saw Edward holed up in some rat-infested shit-hole in Brazil indefinitely, but there were also brief hazy flashes when Edward would almost convince himself to check in on Bella.

I firmly made up my mind to find Edward in Brazil and show him what I've seen. I tried to search his future again, but another vision came to me on its own.

Charlie is sitting at his small brown desk in the police station in Forks. He picks up the phone on its first ring and answers, "Chief Swan."

The concerned voice on the other line replies, "Charlie."

"What is it Mike? Did they find her?" Charlie anxiously asks with a strange mixture of both hope and dread in his voice.

"They recovered Bella's body early this morning. I'm so sorry Charlie."

"They are sure it's her?" Charlie desperately asks.

"The body was burned beyond recognition. It was determined that the remains were of a female in her late teens. They identified Bella through her dental records and x-rays of her previous injuries."

Charlie doesn't reply. He hangs up the phone and covers his face with his hands as silent tears begin to slide down his cheeks.

Jasper could feel the grief brought on by my vision of Charlie. "What's wrong, Alice?"

"In a couple hours, Charlie is going to receive a call from the FBI telling him that they found Bella's body."

"Poor Charlie. I know what it is like to lose a child." Esme's voice broke on the last word.

"This vampire is really covering his tracks," Jasper states.

"Carlisle! We have to find Edward now!" I nearly shouted, knowing that there is a slim possibility that he would decide to check on Bella. "If he hears that Bella is dead before we can tell him the truth, there is no doubt in my mind what he will do..."

"You don't think he is dumb enough to pull a Romeo?" Rosalie asked.

"Yes, Rose. That is exactly what he'll do."

"But she's just a human!"

"She's his MATE, Rose!" I yelled. Jasper's waves of calm were not enough this time. He had to physically restrain me from attacking her.

Carlisle waited a few minutes until we calmed down and then asked, "Did you see this, Alice?"

"I don't need to see it. I know my brother. When he left her so she could live a long, happy human life, he knew she would die someday and decided to follow soon after. He cannot live in this world if she isn't in it. Last year, when he wasn't sure if he would make it in time to save her from James, he decided to go to the Volturi and ask for death if he was too late. I saw it!"

"Alright Alice, you, Jasper and Emmett go pack. Esme, call the airlines. Rose, get on the laptop. Start by hacking into the FBI's database and find Bella's file," Carlisle commanded. "We need to know where to start our search when Edward returns."
