“Quil, she’s alright, she’s been in a car accident. They’ve taken her to the hospital. You need to get there fast.”
He thrust a pair of shorts at me that I caught in my mouth. And immediately took off. It was the quickest run of my life. I phased back and threw on the shorts. I burst through the doors , and caught sight of the leech doctor, Carlisle. He saw me and his eyes filled with sympathy.
“She’s alive, but her mother is close to death and has been asking for you.”
“ I need to see Claire.”
“Claire will live, her mother will not. Trust me.”
Something in his eyes told me he wasn’t lying.
“Okay,” I said reluctantly.
He led me down a wide hallway into the emergency room. Claire’s mother lay on the last bed on the left, bloody and broken.
“Quil,” her voice barley above a whisper,” Tell Claire I love her, and I want you to take care of her.”
“Always,” my voice now effected by emotion. I was crying. I wasn’t sure she heard me.
“ I always liked you.”
And with that, the life left her eyes. I’m sure if the leech doctor could cry he would be by now. With tears streaming down my face, I turned to Carlisle.
“Take me to her.” I braced myself for the worst. Carlisle again led me down a wide, white hallway to a private room. Claire lay there, a nurse cleaning blood from her face. I nearly phased again there.
“Claire,” I whispered.
She appeared to hear me and opened her eyes to search the room. She seemed to have found what she was looking for when her eyes found mine.
“Quil,” she said. Her voice a raspy whisper. I rushed to her side and took her hand.
“Where’s my mom?” panic began to rise in the voice.
“I’m so sorry sweetie.” Tears started to rise in her eyes.
“ I will give you two some time.” Carlisle said as he and the nurse stepped out of the room.
Claire started sobbing hysterically. I was unsure of her injuries, but as gently as I could, I slid her over to the other side of the bed and climbed in beside her. I wrapped my arms around her as she turned her face into my chest , and cried.
