An unconscious hush fell over the courtyard of Forks Washington High as a brand new blue Mustang pulled into the parking lot, taking a space close to the steps leading up to the front doors. Seeing as this car was the newest to ever grace the school, its no wonder everyone was fascinated to find out who was the lucky owner. As he stepped out, the present female population seemed to sigh in unison.
Emmett McCarty stepped out of the car with the grace of a dancer, a difficult accomplishment for someone who stood at 6'5. In a grey V neck shirt and fitted jeans, he swung his black backpack over his shoulder and closed the door, hitting the button to set the alarm before slipping his keys into his pocket.
A soft murmur broke out as he ascended the stairs but it never seemed to bother him. As he reached the top, Jessica Stanley walked out and gaped at the site of him. Emmett walked to her with a brilliant smile and tilted his head to the side.
"Coming out?" he asked in a bass voice. Jessica looked at her hand on the side of the door and giggled shyly as she realized that she'd been blocking his way inside.
"Yeah, I'm like, so sorry. I didn't realize that I was uh..." She trailed off as she gazed into his midnight blue eyes. "Oh my gosh, I love your eyes."
"Thank you, beautiful." Jessica beamed. "And I like, totally love your hair." He said in a mock valley girl voice to match hers and slowly brushed a strand of her dark brown hair from her shoulder, being sure to graze her neck with his fingers so that he could watch the goosebumps form on her visible bare skin. She reflexively ran her hand over her left arm to soothe them.
"I'm Jessica by the way." She said with a shy smile as she extended the hand of the arm she was rubbing to him.
"Emmett." He took her hand and squeezed it.
"So, do you need a tour or something? Because I could like, y'know, assist." She batted her eyes and took a step forward, but he shook his head.
"That's alright, I have to pick up my schedule and stuff, so I'll just catch you later." He said while making his way around her.
"Yeah, sure, of course. See you around." He gave her a warm smile before the doors closed behind him, blocking her from sight. The hallway wasn't as busy as he thouhgt it would be, and people quickly glanced at him as he made his way between the aisle of lockers, searching for the main office.
Halfway down the hall, he noticed a slim burnett girl drop her books, then curse before bending to get them. He hoisted his bag up on his shoulder more, before leaning down to help her.
"Thank you so much." She said as she tucked a strand of loose hair behind her ear and stood up with her composition notebook and binder in hand. He stood and she froze as she got a good look at him.
"No problem. I use to be a klutz too before I took up football in 9th grade, so I know how it is." Emmett handed over her folders and packs of college ruled paper, and she put them in her locker.
"So that's what I have to do to get rid of this curse?" She asked as she averted her eyes from his and started taking pens from her locker and putting them into her backpack. "Wear a cup, a pair of oversized shoulder pads, and let steroid built men bulldoze over me?"
"Don't forget the helmet, but other than that, pretty much." She laughed and closed her locker, biting her lip and shaking her head as she turned to look at him.
"Good to know." With that, she turned to leave, and he hurried after her.
"My name is Emmett, for future reference."
"Isabella Swan, but I hate that name, so just Bella." He touched her arm, and she turned around to face him.
"Then why even mention 'Isabella'?" He asked, using air qoutes as he said her name. She ran a hand through her hair and placed the other on her hip as she bit her lip.
"That's a good question." She gave one sudden laugh before throwing up her hands. "I don't even know. Bad habit?" He watched her as she held her elbow in her palm and bit her thumb nail.
"You're different... I kinda like it."
"Yeah? So does my boyfriend." She said with a smile. He opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off as a guy with long black hair and a natural dark tan made a scene of slamming his shoulder against the locker on Bella's right side, causing her to jump.
"So you're the new guy, huh?" The guy assessed him with a quick look over, then smiled. "Jacob Black." He said as he stretched his hand out to him.
"Emmett McCarty." Emmett replied as he took Jacob's hand and shook it lightly before shoving his hands in his pocket.
"Bella." Jacob acknowledged her while looking at the ends of his hair and Bella rolled her eyes.
"Grow up, Jake. Bye, Emmett." She smiled and he returned it with a nod of his head as Bella walked away.
"What the hell was that about?" Emmett asked as soon as he was sure Bella was out of earshot.
"That would be my ex. 'Nuff said." Emmett nodded.
"Gotcha, I won't even ask." Emmett looked at his watch and sighed. "Can you show me the main office? I still don't have my schedule and class starts in what, five minutes?" "Ten, actually. They just put an earlier time so that all those kids who come late are actually on time."
"Wow, that's slick... Smart asses." Jacob chuckled and turned on his heel.
"Welcome to Forks High! The office is this way." He said as he raised his hand above his head and pointed in front of him as he began speed walking down the hall. Emmett followed behind him and managed to spare a glance behind him to see that Bella was still at the end of the hall talking to a girl with short hair that stuck out in every direction. Bella felt him looking and turned to look at him.
"So was Bella a bad girl why you guys didn't work out?" Emmett asked conversationally.
"Ha, Bella is a lot of things, bad is definitely not one of them." Jacob replied over his shoulder, never wavering in his speed.
"I can change that." Emmett mumbled under his breath, turning to look at her again. Bella quickly turned away, running her hand through her hair, trying to play off the fact that she had just been staring at him. He smiled pleased. I can change a lot of things, he thought with an evil grin as he rounded the corner behind Jacob, and the office loomed in site. And I sure as hell plan on doing just that.
