My fingers drifted lazily over the items on the racks of the grocery store, I was only here for something I needed to make it through my first night in Forks. Batteries, a major thing I had forgotten to pack when I'd left home. Suddenly a nimble white hand reached out and presented a pack of AA batteries to me. I froze when I saw who the hand belonged to. She was beautiful, with short, dark, hair, and a thin figure. Her eyes were a bright gold, and her skin was pale, it seemed to glow in the dim light of the grocery store.

“You needed some of these, right?”

I couldn't speak, so I just nodded.

She smiled a dazzling smile, and continued to hold them out to me. “I'm Alice, pleased to meet you.”

I gently took the batteries, and felt my hand graze her skin, I fought the urge to scream at how cold it was, but instead I finally found my voice, “I'm Maggie.”

“Oh, what a beautiful name,” she chirped. Her voice, it seemed almost as if she was singing the words.

We stood in silence for a few seconds, me terrified of this gorgeous woman who seemed to be the very essence of danger, and her, smiling happily as if we were old friends.

“I'm sorry, can I help you with something?” I asked in the nicest tone I could manage.

“Oh, no, but thank you so much for asking.”

“Well, It was nice to meet you,” I took a step back, the batteries still in my hand. She nodded, still smiling. I gave her a friendly wave goodbye, turned, and walked away. I headed strait toward the checkout, and dropped the batteries on the counter. The cashier grabbed the pack of batteries and scanned them using a large red laser.

“That will be five ninety six-please.”

I reached for my wallet, but all I felt was the denim of an empty back pocket scraping against my palm. I checked my other pockets, but my money was nowhere to be found. “Oh no,...” I whispered.

“Look lady there are other people in line,” the annoyed cashier said.

“I've got it covered,” Alice's melodic voice rang out from behind me. Her hand swept dramatically around my head and presented a dark credit card to the cashier.

“Uh, thank you,” I said to Alice, “is there any way I could pay you back?”

“Well, there is something you could help me out with, if you have a few minutes.”

“Yeah sure,” I grabbed the batteries and followed her out of the grocery store. She lead me to her car, an awesome yellow Porsche.

“All right, now that we're alone, could you tell me who you are?”

I frowned, confused, “I'm afraid I don't understand the question.”

“I want to know why you're following my family,” she said threateningly.

“Wha- I'm not following anybody!”

“What are you doing in Forks?” she was so close now I could feel the coldness of her body, our faces were but inches apart.

“My parents threw me out when I told them I dropped out of college, this seemed like a nice town,” I was truly terrified at how frightening she looked in the moonlight.

“And what do you know about me?”

“Just that you're the most terrifying person I've ever met in my life.”

“You're right to be scared,” She reached past me and opened the passenger door to her Porsche. I realized now that I had been pinned up against the car. “Get in, now.”

I stayed frozen in place until she glared at me with threatening but beautiful eyes. Then I nearly dove into the seat just to make her stop staring at me. My bag was already in the back, had she broken into my car to get it? She was around the car and in her seat so fast I didn't have time to blink, and while I was looking at her she turned the car on and we quietly soared out of the parking lot. I was nearly hyperventilating, and I still couldn't seem to catch my breath.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked between breaths.

“To my family. Not only my life is in danger because of you, so it's not my decision what should be done here,” It was incredible, though her words were serious, her demeanor was cheerful and her voice was light.

“Look, I don't know what you think I did, or who you think I am, but if you let me go I'll leave you alone and you'll never see me again.”

“Yes I would. No matter what happens I always do.”

My hand was digging into the handle of the door, for a brief moment I considered diving out, but Alice was driving so fast I couldn't risk it. We were delving deeper and deeper into the forest, and when we finally slowed I realized we were heading up a long driveway that led to a large house.

We stayed silent until the car came to a stop. “Come with me,” was all she said.

I slowly got out of the car, and walked behind her up to the house. She opened the door and stepped aside to let me in. The house was brightly lit, but no one seemed to be home. Suddenly a man shot down the stairs and came to stand in front of me. “Who is she, and what does she know about us?” The man was, honestly, not very appealing. He had a flat face, a pair of bright red lips, and eyebrows that looked as if at any second they could crawl away.

“Edwards, where is Carlisle?” Alice asked calmly.

Her answer came a second later when a man walked calmly down the stairs. The world around me seemed to slow down as I saw his face, his incredible golden eyes locked on mine, and he froze in place. I flashed a shy smile, and he seemed to catch his bearings and continue down the stairs. “And who is this Alice?” His voice was like the copulation of every moment of joy in my life presented in song.

“I'm Maggie Delano, it's a pleasure to meet you,” I held out my hand for him to shake.

He took my hand, and turned it to face him, then gingerly lifted it to his lips, “Carlisle Cullen, the pleasure is all mine.”

His hand was cold, but I still didn't want him to let go. Edward Coughed uncomfortably.

Another man and a woman came down the stairs, the man was tall and strong, with short brown hair, the woman was strikingly beautiful, a blonde, excellent figure, pretty facial structure.

“Jasper already knows what's going on here,” Alice said quietly. “We don't have to wait. Everyone, this is Maggie, and I think she's following us,” she put simply.

“What? No, I already told you I'm not following anybody!”

“She's telling the truth,” Edward said quietly.

“I don't know how else to explain it,” Alice reasoned menacingly. “She's everywhere, in every future I see.”

My heart soared. A future with these guys? Then my heart did a u-turn and plummeted back to earth. Was Alice worried about me hurting them? What was she saying...every future she saw? What was she talking about?

“Alice, you're scaring her,” Edward said loudly.

The blonde spoke for the first time, “Who cares? If she's a threat to us she should be scared.”

“Rosalie,” Carlisle said sternly, “Alice, what exactly happens in the future you see?”

Oh god there's that voice again. I felt a shiver go down my spine, and I blushed when Edward turned to look at me, he seemed to have noticed me shivering.

“It always ends with the Volturi.”

The big guy with all the muscles chuckled. “So we'll just ask her to stay away from us.”

“That won't work Emmett,” Alice said resolutely.

Carlisle spoke again. “What is it that makes the Volturi act against us?” he said calmly to Alice.

I stood there, looking confused and irritated as Alice explained with a frown. “It always ends the same way, the Volturi attack to get to her, and we're all in the way, they want her because of her abilities, it's something very powerful, but I can't see anything beyond that, something with the wolves.”

“So you've seen her as one of us?” Carlisle reasoned.

“Yes. But Carlisle she's in every future! It's just too unlikely! Everything I try to keep her from us fails. She has to be here to get close to us,” Alice scolded.

“Alice, Edward believes her. What else have you seen in her future with us?”

“Things she could easily have been assigned to make happen, I'd hate to ruin the surprise. Carlisle I don't want anyone to get hurt, we shouldn't take any chances.”

“Alice I know you still haven't forgiven yourself for what happened with Bella-” Edward cringed away at the name. “-but we can't assume the worst in people. And we certainly can't do anything drastic regarding this young woman without hard evidence she was sent here.”

A desperate look appeared on Alice's face. “But Carlisle, she's everywhere.”

He looked at me as he answered. “Maybe it's fate. She could be a part of our destiny.”

I smiled. “Okay, now could you explain this, please?”

Carlisle smiled and said, “I'm sorry, I know this must be very confusing for you.”

I nodded.

“I'm Carlisle Cullen, and this is my family. Edward, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, and Jasper is away hunting at the moment.”

Emmett and Rosalie began walking back up the stairs, and paused just long enough for Rosalie to glare back at me. Edward looked between the three of us with a sly smile, and then ran to the window with the same blinding speed as before. Alice pranced lightly over to the couch, and sat down on the end. She patted the space next to her and waited expectantly while I walked over and sat. Carlisle sat in a nearby chair, and crossed his legs patiently.

“Maggie, as you've probably noticed we're not like most families,” Carlisle continued.

“We're special,” Alice added, “And because you're going to end up like us, there's no reason for us to keep it from you.”

“I'm not really sure what you're talking about.” I replied nervously.

“Oh Maggie,” Alice said impatiently. “You saw how fast Edward was moving, and usually we keep that from humans, but...I can see the future. And I've seen you as one of us. Edward can read minds, so he knew he didn't need to conceal our secret in front of you.”

I was sure I had seen Edward moving incredibly fast, but I was less than convinced. “And what is this secret of yours?”

Alice glanced at Carlisle, and he said grimly “Maggie, We're Vampires.”

I nodded, rolling my eyes.

“We have pale skin, gold eyes, we're very cold, and we're all good looking,” Alice cut in. “Not to mention we're strong, and fast, far to incredible to be human. Then there's the extra things, I see the future, Edward reads minds, and Jasper can control people moods.”

I considered the list of possibilities that could explain Edward moving so fast, but I couldn't think of any. I swallowed hard, nodding again, more seriously this time. “So, do you drink human blood?”

“No,” Carlisle assured me instantly. “My family only hunts animals, we're vegetarians.”

I smirked at the thought, then realized for the first time that I was in a house full of Vampires. “And you're going to kill me?” I looked directly at Carlisle.

“No! We're concerned about that fact that you seem to be following us, but we would never hurt an innocent person with no provocation.”

“What about these people...the Volturi? That attack you because of me?”

Carlisle sighed wearily. “Alice has seen the Volturi attacking to get to you because of your power, which means that you are going to be like us.”

I thought about this for the first time, but wasn't willing to comprehend what I was hearing. “Like you...?”

“It seems inevitable that you are going to become a Vampire.”

Instead of the expected terror living forever should have inspired in me I was filled with joy, an eternity...forever? Here? Another bought of shivering coursed through my body. “Okay.”

Carlisle and Alice exchanged a glance. Alice spoke first. “Just okay? Do you have any questions?”

“Who are the Volturi?” I asked, whipping my head around to look at both of them.

Carlisle looked down and said “They're royalty. Very powerful Vampires that keep our secret from being revealed to humans. They're very dangerous, and they enforce the laws of our world.”

“They want me because of some power that I have? But I don't have any...powers.”

Alice smiled. “Not yet, I can't see what it is, but it's powerful enough for the Volturi to kill for.”

Carlisle turned to Alice. “When are the Volturi going to come?”

She thought for a moment then said “Currently? About a month, but it could change.”

“And how do they know about Maggie?”

“I'm not sure,” Alice said quietly.

Carlisle nodded slowly, then said “Maggie, do you have a place to stay tonight?”

I shook my head, “I was just gonna stay in my car.”

“Well we can't have that, there's a bed upstairs your welcome to use,” Alice answered with a smile.

“Uh, thank you,” I said sincerely.

Carlisle smiled at me and continued “If you're hungry we could find you something to eat.”

“No thank you,” I answered with a nervous smile.

Alice took my hand and pulled me up. “I'll show you where you'll be staying.”

I allowed her to drag me along, and Carlisle gave a single wave goodbye with a gentle smile. Alice led me up the stairs, and down a short hallway into a room with a very large bed in the center. The walls were covered with music, cd's mostly, a killer stereo system, and a few photo's of a very pretty girl. She was around eighteen, with red-brown hair, a heart shaped face, and a pointy nose. She was barely smiling, and Edward was with her.

“Oh,” Alice said sadly. “That's Bella. She used to be one of us...but she left.”

“Can you tell me what happened?” I asked quietly.

“Edward wouldn't like it...but you'll find out eventually. Bella and Edward had a child together, her name was Renesmee. And because she was half human, she aged, but she was half vampire, so she aged too quickly. Bella nearly died giving birth, which is why Edward changed her, and they loved each other very much. But Bella was still very powerful, as all newborn Vampires are, and she accidentally hurt Edward with her strength. He convinced her to stay, but the Volturi were still interested in her unique ability. She could shield herself and other people from mental attacks of other Vampires.”

She paused to take one long, deep, breath, and continued. “A situation arose where the Volturi desperately needed her skills, and when they asked, she refused. The Volturi had been challenged by an army built by the remaining members of the Romanian coven-the last royalty that controlled our world-They tried to force her to help them by threatening our family, and I didn't see it coming. I wasn't watching carefully enough, and...she left. She took Renesmee, and she left. She didn't tell anyone where she was going, she didn't even take Jacob with her....”

I shot her a questioning look, and she chuckled lowly.

“Oh, you don't know who Jacob is, he's a werewolf, he's Bella's best friend, and he imprinted on Renesmee. Imprinting is when a werewolf finds his soul mate, it's this profound mystical thing that links the two people together forever. So when Bella didn't take him with her, Jacob was left without his soul mate. He's still waiting for them to return. Edward tried to track them down, but she's always one step ahead. Because we don't age we're supposed to move around before people notice, and we should have left long ago, but Edward refuses to leave, and Carlisle refuses to make him.”

“She's pretty.” I commented. “Wait...Emmett and Rosalie, You and Jasper, Edward has-or had-Bella, what about Carlisle?”

Alice flashed a brilliant smile “Carlisle is alone for now, but I think he'll find someone new. His wife, Esme,” Alice frowned with sorrow at the thought, “She left...no one knows why...not even Carlisle. We never got to say goodbye.” Alice couldn't seem to meet my eyes.

I heard a slight breeze as a shape appeared, a tall figure was standing in the doorway, and Carlisle knocked with the back of his knuckles on the open door. “Are the accommodations suitable?”

My heart was caught in my throat because of what Alice had just told me, and it was beating so fast from seeing Carlisle that I was sure it must have looking like a pulsing Adam’s apple. I couldn't speak, so I just nodded. Then I cleared my throat, and said “Yes, thank you, so much for your hospitality. I really appreciate it.”

“Of course, if you need anything, all you have to do is ask.” He gave me a reassuring smile, and nodded for Alice to follow him.

They turned off the light, went outside, and closed the door. Then I changed into an old gray shirt, a pair of old pajama bottoms, and crawled into the bed. The sheets were crisp and clean, and smelled lightly of tangerine, the pillows were soft, and the covers were a soothing, deep red. The bed was perfect, and yet, still I couldn't sleep. Carlisle was married? What did this mean? It seems like he's available, but he's still married...his wife is still out there somewhere. What if she had a good reason for leaving, and she came back?

I had never had a man in the same bed as me before, and that wasn't going to change until I got married, but I felt so alone...in this huge bed...in this huge room...I sort of wished there was someone here with me...holding me. Someone tall, strong, with cold skin.... Stop! What the heck are you doing? You're in a house full of strangers, and you just agreed to stay? You should be trying to escape because these people are probably psychos who plan on killing you in your sleep and chopping you up into tiny little pieces!!! But that probably won't happen... good luck sleeping!
