20. Chapter 20

Neither of us realized that we had spent over three hours making love. Not that I was complaining; it was the most amazing three hours of my life. I started to realize that I had only four hours left. I wanted to build a time machine and just stop time and relish in the last few months. I wanted to stay…I wanted to live.

After we got back to the house and pulled into the garage, we intertwined our fingers and walked into the living room. We were staring at a scene out of some perfect family photo album. The women in my family were dressed in black tops and white bottoms: Alice in a black halter and white flowing skirt, Esme in a black wrap-around sleeveless top and a pair of white gauchos, and Rose in a black v-neck sleeveless tank and white pants with a crease down the center of the legs. The men were dressed in black polos and white linen pants.

The women sat in chairs and their respective partners stood behind them minus a chair next to Esme and a space behind that chair. I knew those were intended for Edward and me. Edward whooshed upstairs and changed out of his jeans and button-down and into his picture attire and was right back at my side before I even had a real chance to notice.

He escorted me over to my chair and took his place behind me. I looked at Alice with raised eyebrows and she just smiled back at me.

“Family picture day!”

“I can see that much.”

“We decided that it was time we have a family photo-we haven’t really had one before.”

“I understand,” I said as I watched Alice get up and set the timer on the ridiculously expensive and undoubtedly high-tech digital camera that rested atop a tripod. “Will you print me off a copy of it tonight; a wallet-size?”

“Absolutely,” she whispered as she rushed back to the seat next to me. “Ok people, in three-two-one say Little Emmy. Three. Two. One…”

While Alice played with the picture and printed me a copy, Edward and I went upstairs to clean up. After a thirty minute shower and love making session, I was dressed in cuffed indigo-colored capris, a pair of black bejeweled flip flips and a light blue tank-top with a white sporty bolero. Edward was in button-down burgundy shirt and dark blue jeans. God he looked sexy. We were still in our bedroom making out when Edward growled.

“Family meeting; Carlisle has asked us to come downstairs.”

We started for the door before I stopped and Edward turned toward me. “What’s wrong?”

“Edward, what time is it?”

His demeanor changed immediately when he said, “Five thirty-seven.”

I closed my eyes and pulled me into his arms tightly before scooping me up, twirling me around causing me to giggle, and then going down to the kitchen. I took my seat next to Edward at the kitchen table and waited for the meeting to begin.

“Bella,” started Carlisle, “we need to talk about what’s going to happen tonight.”

“Has Alice’s vision changed?”

“Unfortunately, no; we have been playing with her vision since she had it and nothing’s changed. Tonight, Demetri, Alec, and Jane will pay us a visit. They will inform us that they have been sent here to take you because a vampire law has been broken and there must be a punishment. Aro has decided that punishment shall be the forfeiture of your life. I am sorry to say that so bluntly, but they will not hold back on their candor. They are prepared for a fight-actually they almost expect it.

Aro sends them with an ulterior motive; he believes that our coven is becoming too large and is going to use Bella’s knowledge of our world as a way to start a fight and eliminate us. The do not expect her to react in the manner planned. Because of her response, we know that she’s going to be taken to Volterra.”

I whipped my head to Alice, “I told you specifically not to look! I told you that I do not want you to see how I die. I will not have the image of my death in your minds.”

“Bella, I had to watch to ensure they left without any confrontation. I had to make sure our family was safe. The moment I saw you in that moment…I was going to force the vision to end.”

“Ok,” I said defeated. “Why are they taking me to Volterra?”

“We don’t know. Alice’s visions end after you leave with them. We have deduced that they will want to know more about why a human would be willing to sacrifice their life for our kind. It’s not something that Aro has ever seen, from what I know. He will be interested.”

“So is it possible after learning that I’d be changed that he’d let me go, let me come back,” I asked as my voice and body perked up.

“I’m sorry, Bella, but no. The Volutri are not a forgiving people and they do not take this law lightly.”

“But the other vision showed Aro letting me live for six months after Edward and I were married.”

“I know sweetheart, but that was when he thought you only knew about our family. Then it was acceptable because only our family was at risk.”

“What do you mean?”

“Tanya went to visit Aro and told him about your impending wedding. We knew this would happen-this is how he learned of you and why we had a visit from the Volturi.”

“You never told me this!”

“I know, and we are sorry, but we thought it best not to worry you. Perhaps that was a mistake, but we cannot change what has since happened.”

“So what happened to change their minds?”

“Some coaxing from Tanya; after showing Aro the threat you made against her and with some of her influence. He decided that because you knew of another vampire coven and that you threatened that family, one that would likely hold true after you were changed, that you it would be an unacceptable risk to allow you to…”

“To live,” I stated matter-of-factly to Carlisle. “I understand.”

I turned to Edward, “Don’t you dare do what I know you are thinking you are going to do. You will not harm Tanya no matter what she has done. You will put yourself in harm’s way and ruin a relationship you have with her family. I will not have that.”

“Bella, she is costing you your life. I will not allow her to live when she is responsible for your death,” he said with extreme conviction.

“Edward, no. For me, please don’t. Tell Carmen and Eleazar and Irina, but you do NOT touch Tanya. Now, Alice and Rose-go to town.”

“If I can’t beat the bitch’s ass, at least my sisters can in my stead.”

“OK, back to the subject matter at hand,” commanded my father-in-law. “I’m sure Aro will touch you and try to read your mind and get as much information on us as possible, so be prepared. He may also ask you about us, feel free to answer as honestly as you would like, but he’s going to eventually see the information, although it is possible that he might not because you can block me out. We don’t know what he will see or won’t see.”

“Will it hurt,” I inquired very quietly while looking down at the table.

“No, it will not. While he is here, we are going to ask Alec to use his talent on you as a favor to Carlisle and the ages old friendship between him and Aro. He will agree and believes that Aro will be agreeable as well.”

“What will I feel?”

“You’ll feel nothing, love,” Edward spoke stroking my cheek with the backside of his fingers, “Alec’s talent will shut off all your senses.”

“Will I still be able to think?”

“Yes, we assume so.”

“My final thoughts will be of you my love. You are the first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing on my mind when I fall asleep. The last thought I will ever have will be of you.”

We sat there silently gazing into each other’s eyes.

“God I love you, Bella. I don’t know how to go on without you”

“You won’t have to for long my love,” I blubbered with tears coming down my face.

“Sis, you should really call your mom. Edward can go with you. There’s a new box of tissues on the table next to your bed. You can take your time, but I know we’ll see you in about an hour.”

“Thanks, Alice,” I said without ever breaking eye contact with Edward. We stood up from the meeting table and walked upstairs to our bedroom. It was time to say good-bye to my mother.

About twenty-four hours ago I married the love of my existence. We had not planned on marrying this early, but I would have married her in a second had she mentioned it. I was willing to give her anything she wanted and had planned on spending eternity doing so until yesterday.

That’s when Alice had her vision that would end my world and cease any happiness I would have after 8:36 p.m. tonight. To an outsider, we might look like a very happy, beautiful family, but inside we were in a constant state of pain…I knew because I could hear their thoughts.

We had been willing to fight to the death for her; anything to keep her here. Only, we found that each attempt we would make, no matter what the circumstances, would fail. It wasn’t until she made a decision to go willingly that we survived. She didn’t, but we did and that was unacceptable to each of us.

Alice had seen her decision to go to the Volturi no matter what once she knew it worked and each time she went, we lived. I had plans to kidnap her away from here and take her to what was initially supposed to be our honeymoon destination Carl Isle. I changed my mind when I saw Alice having a vision that showed the Volturi showing up, finding us gone, and going after her parents.

Renee and Charlie were tortured for years. I knew that Alice would not forgive me for allowing that to happen. They were changed and unleashed on our island when the Volturi finally found us. What’s worse, is that their strength beat mine and while I was trying to subdue Renee, Charlie found Bella and his thirst overtook him. Bella would never forgive me for that.

Whether she lived or not, I was not going to cause her an ounce of pain; I could not live with the idea that I had caused her pain or disappointment. I loved her too much for that. I was also not prepared to let her die, but no matter what vision Alice had, we died, she died, and her parents died…with one exception.

She was determined to give herself to them voluntarily, and I could do nothing to change her mind. All the choices were being taken away from me, from us. I knew the reasons for which she was doing this-she wanted to save us and refused to let us die “because of her”.

I knew how she felt when I left her standing the woods: helpless.

If we let her go, she would be the only one who perished, I would be tasked with the responsibility of watching over her parents, and then once they left this plane of existence, I would join her.

Esme repeatedly thought back to the first time they met, when she returned to Esme at Dartmouth, when she showed up at our house for our date, when she accepted my proposal, and how she looked in her wedding gown when they went to New York-she was absolutely stunning. Esme kept wondering about Charlie and Renee, with whom she had forged a relationship with since we announced the engagement. She vowed to be their shoulder to lean on for as long as she possibly could. They were always going to be family to us.

Carlisle had similar thoughts, but was worried about how I would handle losing my wife. I was going to be strong as long as possible; I had to be for her. My father would not have to worry about me. I was worried about him. He wanted to cut his ties with the Volturi and Aro. I was on board with this, but thought it might put the rest of our family at risk. Carlisle was not thinking rationally. He was, however, thinking like a father about to lose his daughter. He had lingering thoughts about following her or going to Volterra, but knew that was not an option.

Aro was going to cause our family to fall apart and I was determined to make him pay.

But there was no time think about that. We had less than half-an-hour before they arrived. I was in awe of Bella’s strength today. I was caught looking at her with sorrow or fright in my eyes and she would place a sweet kiss upon my lips and mouth the words “normal day”.

I came inches from whisking her away in those moments; especially after she got off the phone with her mother. I don’t think she had the energy to cry as hard as she did for Charlie. She asked for a few minutes of privacy in the bedroom to put herself back together. When she was ready, she opened her door, merely wiped her tears away, walked downstairs, and sat down next to Alice at the computer.

Alice and Bella played with the photo-shopping program and family picture we took earlier. They were laughing and cackling for about ten minutes before Alice printed out a wallet-size picture for Bella. She slid it into her back pocket and thanked Alice. We would be with her in the last moments. Alice had managed to capture the perfection of our family in one second of one minute of one hour of the last day we would spend with Bella.
