22. Chapter 22

Once we reached the edge of the forest, there was a car waiting for us. Demetri sat in front (because the twins’ feet could not reach the pedals), Alec next to him, and Jane in the back next to me. After the drive we boarded a jet. It obviously a Volturi private jet because the windows were blacked out and the pilots did not seem fazed that their eyes were blue and that they were literally carrying a human on board.

I took a seat next to the window and pulled out the picture of my family. They were the only thing I looked at for the whole trip. I was offered a bottle of water and an apple about halfway through the flight and took it graciously. I sort of wished they had something like fish or chicken on board so I could eat something repugnant to them and make them suffer.

We landed just as the sun was setting in Italy and were driven to Volterra. I put my priceless picture back into my pocket. We pulled into a garage and I was escorted through various tunnels and walkways. It was a very old building, but had some modernity to it like recess lighting, a modern lobby-like space with desks, computers, and telephones, and an elevator. We took the elevator up to a floor I could not decipher because the button she pushed was in Italian, or at least I thought it was.

As we exited the elevator, we turned right and I was directed to a small wooden door which was cracked slightly open.We entered what looked to be a small sitting room, but it was furnished with a large bed with a red velvet canopy. There was also a large flat screen television mounted to the wall that faced the bed.

“Aro is in the middle of some business that he needs to complete and has requested not to be interrupted. He had decided to take of this ‘situation’ tomorrow. You will stay here tonight and there will be a guard outside your door. The satellite television should keep you occupied.”

I was shoved in the room and the door was slammed and locked behind me. I had nothing else to do, so I plopped on the bed and while lying on my stomach, grabbed a pillow and turned on the television. According to the channel guide it was a little after midnight.

I found a re-run of Doctor Who on one of the channels and settled in. Emmett found it a few months ago and got me hooked. I thought it was absurdly hilarious the way he was obsessed with it. It was the episode with the alternate universe with the Torchwood Institute and the Cybermen and Daleks. I watched as Rose kept having dreams of the doctor after being trapped in the AU when they saved the world.

She told her parents and Micky about the dreams and they drove up to Bad Wolf Bay and there he was, one last time. He was a hologram, but he was there. Then just after Rose said I love you, he started to tell her the same, then he was gone; the power was depleted and time had run out. I knew exactly how she felt. My time had run out.

I remember the hearing the themes song in the end credits as my eyes started to get heavy. After a few minutes I faintly heard the theme song to the opening credits of Torchwood. I couldn’t help but think that this was an insane way to spend my last night alive before a vampire killed me; watching a television show about a Time Lord who liked to save Earth and was in love with a human woman/one of his companions who travelled throughout all time and space fighting the Cybermen, Daleks, the last human alive who turned out to be a piece of skin (who’s vanity slightly reminded me of Jessica) and mannequins who turned out to be sadistic killers. And I thought the world of vampires and werewolves was complicated.

I had only one dream that night; Edward and I were lying in our meadow and he was humming my lullaby telling me everything was going to be ok. I watched the rays of sun dance off his skin and make it sparkle with all the colors of the rainbow. I woke to the sounds of some cartoon. I checked the channel guide again and found that it was now almost eleven. I sat up, stretched, and yawned and almost started to look around the room for Edward.

A few seconds later my door was unlocked and there was Demetri with a silver tray with a silver domed cover.

“If that’s food, I don’t want it. I don’t think I could eat right now.”

“Fine, your funeral,” he snickered.

“If it’s ok with you,” I sneered but backed off realizing where I was, “ I would like to get this done quickly.”

He all-of-a-sudden appeared with some clothes and a pair of shoes in his hands. “Aro has mentioned that you might like to clean-up.” He pointed to a door I had not even realized existed, “There are some toiletries in there as well as some towels. Please clean-up quickly. I’ll be waiting outside.”

He shut the door after handing me the items in his hands. Below the pink pair of Nikes was a pair of jeans, a pink tank top, and a long-sleeve hoodie. Who thought a captor would have such fashion sense or generosity? I quickly took a shower and got dressed. I also found a blow dryer and proceeded to dry my hair. I wasn’t trying to drag this out, but I wanted to be comfortable.

As soon as I was done and exited the bathroom, Demetri opened my door and motioned for me to go through the doorway. He escorted me down a couple of hallways and finally we arrived at two tall wooden doors with wrought-iron door hinges. The door was opened for me by Demetri and I entered what I assumed was a throne room. The three thrones encrusted in gold with red plush back and seat cushions were a dead give-a-way.

There stood clone of the monster from my nightmare: not worry because after today I would never again have to worry about that nightmare-or any nightmare.

“Ah, Bella, what a pleasure it is too met you.” The demon from my nightmare stood in the center of the large room. “I’m sorry it has to be under these circumstances.”

“We’re only here because some bitch that is after my husband convinced you that I was a liability.”

“WHO ARE YOU CALLING A BITCH?!” I was immediately caught off-guard as a set of razor-sharp teeth snapped at me and then disappeared. I frantically looked around.

“Don’t worry my dear; Tanya has been removed from the room. She need not be here for this, today. I find it curious that you fight so vehemently for our kind. What is even more fascinating is that you called Edward your husband.”

“We were-are engaged and I had become accustomed to the idea,” I lied. I just didn’t care at this point. What else could they do to me? I knew he was going to find out eventually, but I wanted to keep something secret even if just for a few moments.

“I see. Bella, may I touch you?”

“Excuse me?” I feigned disgust even though I knew exactly what he was after.

“You see, not unlike your, I believe they call themselves a vegetarian family yes?”

I nodded.

“Not unlike some of the members of your vegetarian family, I have a talent of my own as do Jane and Alec. As I am sure you are aware.” He would want to touch me and get as much information against the Cullens as possible, but nothing would come of it for some reason. I conceded.

“Sure,” I shrugged acting as if I knew nothing and it did not matter. In reality, it didn’t.

“Your hand please, Bella,” he said reaching out for it.

“I gave him my hand and he placed it between his and concentrated.”

Nothing. I half expected him to blank out like Alice did, but nothing. His brow furrowed and he closed his eyes and he tightened his grip on me. His eyes flashed open and he was frustrated. I wanted, no had, to know what he had just seen.

“Pity, I was hoping to get an insight into that mind of yours. Alas, I am not destined to be that lucky. I wonder if you would prove more valuable to me as one of us.” He pondered this for a moment before speaking, “I guess it does not matter, I do not have the patience to deal with a newborn right now. Demetri, please hold her.”

God, this was it, this was going to be my last thought, my last breath, and this place would be the last thing I would see.

“Wait,” I screamed at the top of my lungs.

“Feisty isn’t she,” Aro chuckled. “You should know that this is inevitable, Bella. This is not something you can fight.”

“I know that, but Carlisle wanted to ask favor of you. He thought that after the years of friendship between you, you might oblige.”

“And what might that favor be?”

“Since we did not resist and because I came willingly, we were hoping you would show mercy and allow Alec to use his talent on me when you…do….it.”

“Alec, Jane, why did you not tell me of this,” he asked as his head twisted toward the wall where the cherubic vampires stood.

“Must have….slipped our minds, Master. We are quite old,” she innocently replied.

“Oh, Jane, what am I going to do with you,” he questioningly chuckled.

He turned back to me, “Of course we will utilize Alec. I value the friendship that exists between Carlisle and myself. We all make mistakes and Carlisle is no different.”

“Thank you. May I look at a picture in my pocket before you begin?”

He nodded.

I pulled the picture from my back pocket and just stared at it. The moment I smiled as image of my husband came into view then the whole world went dark.

I wondered if this is what death felt like. Was this Heaven or Hell? Did neither exist or was I in Limbo? I didn’t know, but I knew I could hear voices-just whispers, but they were voices.

“It won’t hurt to see what happens afterwards, Caius. I am curious to see the turn of events.”

“You are a fool, Aro!”

“Think about the possibilities, Caius. That is something we cannot pass up.”

While they continued to argue or discuss the topic at-hand, I struggled to open my eyes. I attempted to take everything around me in. I was laying on something soft; I could feel that. I was in a large room which could not have been my room from last night because when Caius said Aro’s name it echoed. I was unable to figure out if it was day or night as my eyes started to slowly flitter open.

“Excuse me, Master, the human is awake.”
