EPOV

“Charlie, it’s Carlisle. I’m so sorry to call you at such an early hour, but there’s been an accident.”

“An accident? Is Bella ok?”

“Charlie, it’s best that you meet us at the hospital. We should be there within the next ten minutes. You can meet us in the ER.”

“Carlisle, please tell me what’s going on! She’s my daughter!”

“Charlie, I’m sorry, but it’s best that you just meet us at the hospital.”

“Tell Bella that I love her and will be there as fast as I can.”

Before he could respond, Charlie ended the call. What was Carlisle going to say to him anyway: sorry, you’re daughter’s dead and I can’t tell her a damn thing; sorry, some bad vampires took your daughter from us because she found out about us and now they want to kill her; sorry, my son got your daughter killed all because he fell in love with her.

When we got to the hospital, Carlisle carried the lifeless corpse of Faux Bella into the hospital and everyone rushed to his side. The look on his face and a slow shaking of his head from side-to-side made them back off. He walked into an exam room and put her down and pulled a sheet over her.

Meanwhile, Esme had found a wheelchair and helped me from the car into the chair. She wheeled me into the hospital and then into room where Carlisle had taken Faux Bella. Playing my part, which was not all that hard, I took her hand into mine and cradled it softly. I placed my head on the side of the bed and watched my fingers intertwine with Faux Bella. I imagined this girl was her; her fingers, her touch, her skin, and her scent.

“Carlisle when is she? Where’s my daughter?”

“Charlie, please, calm down. Perhaps you should sit down.”

“GODDAMNIT CARLISLE! Where is my daughter?”

“Charlie, I’m sorry. There was an accident. Edward and Bella were in a car accident on the highway and got clipped by another car coming around a curve on the highway. They were on the way back from Port Angeles after having dinner.”

“Oh my God! Are they ok? Where is she? Where are they?”

“Edward tried to keep control of the car, but ended up doing a one-eighty. We found him on the other side of the road.”

“Good God! Is he alright?”

“Physically, I think just a few broken bones.”

“Physically? Carlisle, where is my daughter?”

“When they did the one-eighty,” Carlisle paused for a second to muster enough courage, “Bella’s side of the car slammed into a rock wall. Edward was trying to prevent them from rolling down the hill on the other side, but lost control.”

Charlie stood there silent for a few moments as the words hit him. “Where is she,” he asked much more quietly.

“Charlie, we are so sorry,” Esme apologized somberly.

“No. No, no, no, no, no.”

I listened intently as my father-in-law repeated the word no and backed himself into a wall. I could hear the teardrops dripping off his face onto the floor. I also heard the internal condolences of the staff and a stray passerby along with comments and questions about the illustrious Cullens returning. I heard the light footsteps of Esme approaching Charlie and his sobs muffled as she pulled him into an embrace.

“Are you sure there’s no chance,” Charlie asked as he looked over Esme’s shoulder to Carlisle. I heard nothing, but saw the image of Carlisle shaking his head through Charlie’s mind. He pulled back from Esme’s embrace and said, “Thank you, Esme.”

“We love her too, Charlie.”

He wiped his eyes while he asked, “Can I see her?”

“I don’t know if that would be such a good idea, Charlie.”

“Carlisle, I have to see my daughter. Where is she?”

“Charlie, I must warn you, the accident---she’s---her face—“

I didn’t know if Carlisle was playing a part or if the reality of the situation hit and he really couldn’t find the words.

“She’s my daughter; I have to see her.”

“Ok, she’s in Exam Room three behind us with Edward. Let me get him out of there.”

“No, he can stay if he would like, Carlisle.”

“No, we should get him to x-ray and get his bones set. Esme, do you mind? I’d like to stay with Charlie.”

“Not at all dear,” Esme said as she turned around and walked into the room. I put Faux Bella’s hand down and sat back in the wheelchair as the crowd of father’s gathered behind me. As my chair was turned around, I looked up and saw Charlie looking at me.

“Charlie, I’m so—, “ I stopped as he put his hand up.

“Edward, it’s not your fault, so please do not apologize. But I will find that bastard who this to you two and make him pay.”

“If you don’t, I will,” I replied.

“Edward, I may not have always approved of you, or your actions for that matter, but I know that you love………loved my daughter.”

“Always have and I always will.”

“Edward, we should get going and give Charlie some time.”

“Yes, mother.”

As Esme wheeled me down the hallway, I couldn’t help but think that the bastard Charlie wanted to kill was me….if he only knew.

As the “x-rays” were taken and Esme changed the films that were to be delivered to Carlisle, I focused my attention to Charlie and Carlisle. I couldn’t get the image of the sheet covering Faux Bella covered in Charlie’s tears as he stroked his hand atop of her pig’s blood stained hair out of my head. He collapsed to his knees as his sobs echoed out of the exam room; he was heartbroken. I stopped looking through his head just as he composed himself enough to stand up and ask to see her. I could not take looking through his head as he saw the face of his “dead daughter”.

Instead I let images of Real Bella float through my mind-cuddling on the couch and in bed, making love in our meadow, our wedding, watching her sleep, her kisses, the look on her face when I proposed, her laugher when she tar and feathered Emmett, how she fit in so perfectly with my family, and her smile. I loved her more than I could put into words. Even in my memories, her face comforted me.

I was wheeled out of x-ray and into my own exam room. Carlisle bandaged me up and I hobbled into the waiting room to join the rest of my family. It was there that we waited for everyone. Slowly, word made the Forks Grapevine about the accident and our friends starting showing up at the hospital. While he already knew, Jake showed up with Jessica in tow.

The rest of the Pack and their families came not long after and then Ben with Angela who gave me a long hug and sobbed in my arms. Between sobs she gave me her condolences and told me that she knew all along Bella and I were destined for each other; she said she knew how much we loved each other. All I could think about was how that was supposed to last forever. I thanked her and handed her back to Ben who tried to console her just as Charlie emerged from Faux Bella’s room.

Sue walked up to him and embraced him tightly as we looked on. As their embrace ended he looked around waiting room and saw all of us.

“There’s no doubt that my Bella was loved. Thank you all for your support. I know she cared for each one of you greatly,” he said confidently as tear still streamed down his cheeks. “Um, if you’ll excuse me, I must call her mother.” He walked out of the building quietly and pulled out his phone to call her mother. Within minutes I heard her sobs and knew that her heart had just broke.

Everyone around me was dying and hurting inside and there was nothing I could do about it. It was my fault that they were hurt and it was my fault she was gone. I started to retreat inside myself when I heard her voice speak to me.

Edward.

You’re back.

I never left.

Look at them, they’re hurting and it’s my fault.

No, Edward, it’s not.

If I had just stayed away from you—

If you had stayed away from me, I never would have known true love or happiness. Neither would you.

I love you so much.

I love you too, Edward.

I miss you.

I miss you, too, but you can’t retreat to a world that no one can bring you out of.

You could.

Edward, you promised me.

I know, but—

No buts, Edward. Do not break this promise. Stay strong for me, please. Do it for me.

That’s unfair; you know I would do anything for you.

Why do you think I said it like that, silly?

I chuckled aloud, but no one noticed. Ok.

Ok, as in you’ll to it?

Yes, I will stay strong for you.

Not just for me, your family needs you and Charlie needs you, too.

He’s really hurting, love.

I know and that’s exactly why he needs you. Be strong for him; show him how much we loved each other and how happy we were.

Don’t leave me, Bella.

Part of me will always be with you. But right now, I have to.

No, no you don’t. Please don’t leave me. I love you.

I love you too, but I have to go. Be strong my love.

Bella, no! Please come back. Please.

*****

We arranged for Phil and Renee to fly to Forks and reserved a hotel and car for them as well. Carlisle and Esme insisted on paying for the funeral. Charlie and Renee tried to argue, but in the end we won out.

Charlie asked me to accompany him to all of the appointments for planning the funeral. For the first time, I felt he actually accepted me. The wake was held May nineteenth and the funeral on May twentieth. After the funeral everyone came back to our house for a few hours.

I felt guilty thanking everyone for their condolences. I mostly just nodded. The only smile I had that day was when Sam and Emily spoke to me. They were understanding of my pain and were trying to be very attentive. Brandon was fidgeting in Emily’s arms in a sharp black suit that even caught my sister’s attention for a fraction of a second before her sorrow took over again. He reached out to me and I took him. He smiled and clapped when I held him. No one could keep a frown on their face around that little boy.

He gazed into my eyes for a fraction of a second and then laid his head on my shoulder and patted my cheek like he was telling me it was going to be ok. I closed my eyes and rubbed my cheek against his. Shortly thereafter he was off to sleep. I focused and only listened to each one of his heart beats and breaths. Sam and Emily left Brandon with me while they went to check on Charlie and Sue.

About an hour later he woke up. He sat up and looked at me with a big grin on his face. Both his hands slapped my cheeks and he laughed wildly causing me to laugh. I was holding him over my head and gently moving him around and making airplane noises when Charlie came over and sat next to me.

“Can I,” he asked raising his eyebrows and looking at Brandon.

“Of course Charlie,” I said brining him down from over my head and handing him over to Charlie. The bonded almost as quickly as I did with him. He laughed and cooed as Charlie played with him and blew raspberries on his neck. He started to fuss a bit and Emily came and got him so he could eat.

“You would have made a great dad, Edward,” Charlie said to me as he stood up.

“Thank you, Charlie. You are a great dad and would have made an even better grandpa.”

Charlie nodded his thank you and walked into the kitchen to talk with Sue, Esme and Carlilse. Renee had such a great bond with Esme that she also spent most of her time in the kitchen with Phil at her side. She had spent some time with me, but couldn’t spend much time next to me without thinking about what was supposed to be her daughter’s future and bursting into tears. Had I been able to cry, I would have been doing so uncontrollably for days.

Esme and Carlisle looked at me and thought be strong son.

I could try. I could only try.
