It was a dark and stormy night when she first showed up. I know it sounds seriously cliché, but it honestly was. She appeared right in the middle of Edward and I`s living room. She looked around her, looking rather startled. She had waist length black hair that was streaked with gold, blood red eyes and ivory skin.
At first glance I thought she was a vampire, but then I heard a heartbeat that was twice as fast as Nessie`s and I denied the thought. But she was certainly not human though, for she had two giant golden birds wings protruding from her shoulder blades.
I noticed she had a smoky smell, almost like she had just been in a large fire. Her blood was strangely appealing, like a cool glass of lemonade on a hot day. desirable. but something about her screamed danger.
I glanced at Edward, who`s eyebrows where knotted together, as though he was trying really hard to do something, but couldn`t. he blinked and then spoke.
“Who are you, and how did you get here?” he asked smoothly. I saw him slowly walk over to Nessie, who was asleep on the sofa and nudge her so she woke up.
“What the?” she asked groggily. Then she saw the girl, for she barely looked seventeen. But being a vampire, who was I to judge. She turned around suddenly so she was facing my husband and child. “Do not panic, I don`t intend to harm the girl.” She said in a voice that sounded like bells, but had an underlying edge of desperation and exhaustion. I glared at her.
“Then you mustn`t mind answering my husband`s question. Who are you, and how the heck did you get here?” she looked at me, and I saw pain and sorrow and age in the deep, fathomless pits of her ruby eyes. She had lived long and suffered much.
“my name is Phoenix and I seek refuge.” She said quietly. “I came here from another world.” My eyes widened.
“I came here from another world.” She said. I blinked. This strange girl whose mind I could not read had just said the craziest thing I had ever heard. I shook my head.
“Impossible.” I said. Nessie looked up at me and raised her hand to my face. Pictures of all the fantasy movies she had seen flashed through my mind. She blinked her chocolate brown eyes at me. I shook my head at her.
“Why can I not see into your mind?” I asked her. I only knew one person who could block me and I was married to her. She shrugged.
“I`m a stronger telepath. I sense mistrust and disbelief from your own mind. If I show you who I am, then will you believe me?” she asked me. I nodded. She shut her eyes and suddenly a wave of memories washed over me. I saw the world millennia ago, I saw this girl protecting other universes, I saw her fall in love with a human and bear him children. I saw how she lost that family. But what surprised me the most was the numerous images of her drinking human blood. She opened her eyes and stared at me, not even blinking.
“You`re a vampire.” I whispered. I felt Bella lift her shield.
She asked me disbelievingly. Phoenix turned to face her.
“I was the first. The first vampire in any world.” Bella looked frightened.
“How could you hear me?” she asked. Phoenix sighed.
“Telepath. Remember? I need help. I accidentally got trapped in this world, had a slight run in with the Volturi and now it just so happens I have imprinted with Caius. I need help.” She said.
"Wait, isn`t imprinting for werewolves?" Bella asked. Phoenix shrugged.
"Evidently, it`s for werepanthers. It`s sort of a problem, since I`m married and all." Suddenly Alice came running in, with Jasper at her heels.
“I just saw…” she began, but then she saw Phoenix. “oh. Okay then. I am so out of practice.” Then she saw the wings and noticed the heartbeat and scent. “holy… what are you?” she asked. Phoenix sighed.
“It`s a long story.” She said
“it’s a long story.” I said. After everything that had happened in the past 48 hours I was very confused. “I am The Phoenix. I was created when my earth was made and I was charged as it-and every other worlds- protector.
“Somehow, a witch cast a spell that transported me here. Only, she sent me to the Volturi. My guard was down and Aro managed to touch me. When he saw all the things that I had done to expose vampires on my world he ordered me to die. I was in my halfway form at the time and Caius saw that I was a werepanther.
“He volunteered to kill me, and he tried. But when he touched me he imprinted with me. He went into shock and I used my chance and escaped.” I said with a breath. I shifted into my halfway form, in which I had red eyes, black fur, gold wings, fangs, claws and cat ears, to prove a point. When I saw their reactions I quickly shifted back. “Do you believe me?” I asked. They nodded. I sighed in relief. “But what happens now?” asked Edward. I got the vision at the exact same time Alice did. It was of me, the Cullens and the werewolves.
We were standing in the Volturi palace and Aro was watching us. Suddenly we were attacked by the Volturi and we were fighting back. The force of the vision knocked me over backwards and it made Alice fall into Jasper. I hit a sofa that was behind me and sat down.
“Wow.” Said Alice. “That was pretty intense.” I nodded in agreement.
“What?” asked Jasper, frustrated.
“What?” asked Jasper. He couldn`t keep up with all the feelings in the room, but one lot freaked him out the most. Phoenix`s. She was so thirsty and angry, and unlike us, she couldn`t ignore her hunger. She is so strange. And what on earth did they see? I nodded in amusement.
“In short, we saw us fighting the Volturi.” Alice said. Phoenix nodded in agreement.
“But we only just dealt with the Volturi! We can`t handle another fight!” Bella cried. I could tell just by looking at her that she was replaying our last encounter with the Italian vampires in her head. “Then don`t fight!” Phoenix cried. “I just want somewhere to stay and hide! I`m sure Alice`s vision could change, the future CAN change, apart from fixed points and that was not one of them.” She explained. Carlisle, Esme, Emmet and Rosalie walked in at that moment. When they saw Phoenix they froze like statues. Phoenix nodded at Carlisle. “You are the leader of this coven?” she asked. “Yes.” He replied. Suddenly, her eyes shifted to the gold that our eyes usually were from the blood red.
“Wow, girl, you got weird eyes.” Emmet said.
“Oh, did they change?” she asked. Carlisle raised an eyebrow.
“Does it happen frequently?” he asked.
“Yes. They`re tied to my emotions, like my wings. Red for bloodlust, black for angry and gold for normal.” She said as though it was the most normal thing in the world. “Have you got anything to drink?” she asked. Esme shook her head.
“We were about to go hunting soon, though.”
“For animals?” Phoenix asked. Esme nodded. Phoenix made a face.
“You could go hunt in Seattle, but please refrain from hunting in this area. We are trying to keep a low profile.” Carlisle said.
“It`s okay. I can drink animal blood. I`ll need to drink a lot, but I can live. It`s not like I can die.” She smiled at that.
“What do you mean?” Carlisle asked her, a curious look on his face.
“You guys are mostly immortal, meaning if someone is strong enough, you can die. I am truly immortal. I cannot die full stop. Sure, I can be weakened or become comatose, but I can never actually die.” She explained. I strained to get a read on Phoenix`s thought, but no matter how hard I tried, she was the stronger telepath. I looked at Bella, who was looking at the newcomer with interest, but her gaze occasionally flickered to Nessie. She caught me staring at her and smiled at me.
“Well, I`ll tell you this, your coven is unlike any I have ever come across. Very few vampires have the restraint to live like this. I have tried, but I found it very difficult.” Phoenix commented. “Please may is stay?” she begged. She looked at Carlisle, a knowing glint in her eyes. “Did I mention my blood can heal any disease or injury?” she added. Carlisle gasped.
"Really?" he asked her. I could hear wonder in his voice.
"Yeah. how am I meant to protect people if I can`t heal them?" she asked. it was a fairly good point. She held out her wrist and drew her fingernail along it. Fresh golden liquid welled up along the line. "Freaky blood." Emmet commented. He always did say what others would not. we were more polite than him.
"I agree with you on that." she said, cracking a half smile. " thank god I heal fast, because it would be rather difficult to explain to a doctor." she considered for a moment. "Actually, come to think of it, the wings and eyes might freak him out first." Emmet cracked up laughing.
"I like you. you can stay." he said. she grinned.
"Now can we hunt?" she asked.
