I couldn’t stand looking at him any longer, I had to run. Without a second thought I got up and ran out of the meadow. I didn’t know if he would follow me, I hoped he wouldn’t. As he just sat and watched me run I cried more, knowing that I was upsetting him more by not just telling him. I couldn’t tell him though. It was a lie, I would never be able to lie to his face. Before I knew any better I was at the door to Charlie’s house. His cruiser wasn’t there so that was a good sign he wouldn’t be in. I unlocked the door and walked in.
“Dad?” No answer. “Dad!” Good he isn’t in! I ran up the stairs to my room and closed the door behind me. I sat on down on my bed and cried. I had never cried so much in my life, not even when he had left me. I don’t know how long had passed before I heard Charlie pull up in the driveway. I quickly ran to the bathroom and threw on the shower. I couldn’t face him yet. I knew my eyes were red and puffy and that my cheeks were stained with dried up tears.
“Bella? Is that you?” I heard him call.
“Yeah, Dad. I’m just taking a shower. I’ll be down in a bit to make dinner!” I tried to sound as cheery as possible, but I didn’t fool him.
“You okay, sweetheart?” Sweetheart…He used to call me that…
“Yeah, I’m okay!”
“Okay!” He’s so easily fooled…
After my shower I tried to make myself look like it was any other day. I worked this time, Charlie didn’t ask if I was okay. We didn’t really speak during dinner either. It wasn’t unusual so it didn’t relly bother me. I finished and then quickly washed my plate.
“Can I go see Jake?”
“Jake? Sure, Bells. What’s with the sudden intrest in hanging out with him? I thought you’d be going to the Cullen’s house or something?” My heart skipped a beat when he said their name. I never wanted to have to hear that name again…
“No… there was a… complication… They’re busy just now…” I knew if I didn’t get away soon I would brake down in front of Charlie.
“It doesn’t bother me. Go if you want, just let me know when you’re heading home, okay?” Phew!
“Course!” I grabbed my jacket and my truck keys and ran out the door. The drive to La Push seemed longer than usual. In a way that was good because it gave me a chance to think about what I was going to tell Jake, but then on the bad side it meant I was alone for longer. When I eventually pulled up next to Jake’s house I saw his bedroom light was on, at least he was hear and wasn’t off chasing some other vampires. I turned of the ignition and got out of my truck. Before I even reached the door, it flew open and Jake stood there in the doorway, he lunged at me and pulled me into his bare chest.
“Oh god, Bella! Are you okay?” He was scared and worried.
“Yeah, I’m fine, why?”
“I know what happened…” He pushed me away slightly so he could look me in the eye.
“What do you mean?”
“I know what you said to the leech. Sorry, Edward.” I flinched as he said his name and he realised it made me uncomfortable. “Sorry, but why did you do it? I thought you loved him?” At this point I knew the tears were visible again. In could feel his frantic hands wiping them away. He could see my shivering now too, he scooped me up into his arms and carried me into his house. He sat me down on his bed and closed his door so we couldn’t be overheard. He sat down next to me and took both my hands in one of his and pulled me into his side.
“Start from the beginning. I need to know what happened.”
“It’s… nothing… just… broke up… that’s all…” I managed to choke between sniffles.
“There’s no point in lying.” He gave me a serious look.
“Please, just leave it alone. I can’t tell you even if I wanted to…”
“Okay, but if you do want to tell me, you know you can. So why did you come in the first place? I was actually about to come to yours.”
“Please, don’t be angry. But I’m leaving.” I saw his horror struck face before he turned away. He got up from the bed and stood by his desk.
“Why?” His voice was gruff and tense.
“You know why…” I tried to keep my voice steady.
“Because of him!” He was beginning to shake slightly.
“Jake! Calm down! Please, calm down…” I stood up and started to walk over, but he edged away, holding up his hands.
“Stay back! Please, just stay back!” He was scared because he knew at any point the could phase and hurt me. I ignored him and moved closer.
“No! You won’t hurt me! I trust you! Now listen, I’m leaving weather you like it or not!” I knew I had stared crying again now. I took his hands on mine and pulled him closer to me.
“Bells, I can’t let him ruin your life like this, stay, please, for me…” He had calmed down now. I also saw a small tear fall from his eyes.
“Please, Jake. I’ve hurt enough people today, don’t make this harder than it already is.” I let go of his hands and stepped back. “I have to go.” I turned for the door and went to leave but his firm grip caught my arm.
“Please, don’t go. I’m sorry. Stay, I want to spend as much time as possible with you before you… leave…”
“I have to go pack…” I tried to loosen his grip on my arm, it didn’t work; it tightened. “Jake, you’re hurting my arm. Let go!” His hand dropped.
“Sorry… Please, just stay.” His eyes were pleading.
“Okay, fine. But tonight, will you come and stay at mine? You can sneak through the window. It’s something… he … used to do… It’ll just be a bit weird sleeping on my own after so long.”
“Sure, I’ll do anything you want…” His face said it all. He didn’t want to come over, but he was doing it for me. I had one more thing I wanted to ask. Even though I guess I knew the answer.
“Can I ask you one more thing?”
“Ummm, okay… What?” He leaned his head to the side and tried to think of what I was going to ask him.
“Come with me…” I had never seen him so shocked in his life.
“I’m asking you to come with me, run away with me…”
“But what about my life here?!” He wasn’t angry, just shocked and upset because I was asking so much of him.
“Your Dad had Sue, you said you didn’t want to be in the pack…”
“I can’t just walk away!” He took a step towards me and pulled me into his tight grasp. His voice was so much softer and quieter. “I know my Dad has Sue, he won’t mind me leaving… But I can’t walk away from Sam and everybody else. They’re family now, and anyway; Sam would never let me go and he’s Alpha, Alpha’s orders have to be obeyed.” He sat me down pn the bed and knelt down in front of me.
“Ask him…” I was about to start crying again in a minute.
“There’s no point…” His voice faded slightly at the end. I changed the tone of my voice and tried to made it sound serious and certain.
“Do you want to come?”
“Well ask him, for me!” I took hold of his face and turned it to look me in the eyes. His eyes were sad and unhappy. He moved my hands from his face and pinned them to the bed, he didn’t turn his face away though.
“Fine, but his answer will be no.”
“Just ask him!”
“Okay, okay. Let’s go to Emily’s, Sam will be there.” With that he got up and pulled me up with him, holding my hand he led me to his motorbike and we drove away.
