I have never driven so fast in my life! Panic was setting in. Please God, please don’t let it be what I think it is! Turning a sharp left, ignoring all the horns, I arrive at the hospital, practically jump out and pace. It wasn’t long before a soft voice called my name. “Carlisle?” I turned to see Lilly standing there. Her face was pained and I could tell she didn’t want to be near me. I could hear her heartbeat. Thud, thud, thud. But there was another. More like the wings of a hummingbird. I gasp softly, “No.” She looks at me her expression so innocent. “Carlisle, what is it?”
“Nothing. Just get in the car.” In two strides I’m at the drivers door when she says, “No.”
I face her. “Lilly, please, I am begging you. Get in the car, please.” She sighs and gets in the front passenger seat. “What about my car?”
“I’ll get someone to pick it up.” I put my foot down and speed home, my thoughts consumed of what could be happening. Luckily, no one was home so I quickly ushered Lilly into my medical room. “Hey! No pushing!” she protested.
“I’m sorry.” I gesture for her to lie down and get out my ultrasound equipment. After rubbing the gel on her stomach, I drag the wand along. Blackness. Nothing but blackness. That’s odd. “Carlisle, please tell me what’s going on!”
“Later. Stay still!” The ultrasound no use, I clean her up then palpate her stomach. I could definitely feel something. That, added to my previous observation, led me to one conclusion. “Lilly, you’re pregnant.”
